2008 Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept

Having earned critical acclaim, industry awards and brisk sales, Cadillac CTS
has moved into the vanguard of contemporary design. In doing so, Cadillac
designers faced the question of what to do next. Their answer celebrates that
design legacy with the exhilarating Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept, which premiered
at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

The CTS Coupe takes Cadillac’s acclaimed Art and Science design language and
adds more of both. More expressive, more technical and very personal, the CTS
Coupe extends the dramatic design of its sedan predecessor with all-new sculpted
bodywork aft of the front fenders.

A Design Gem

Among the CTS Coupe Concept’s signature design cues are a number of elements
that suggest the look of a carefully cut diamond – particularly at the rear.
These elements are seen in everything from the chrome header above the rear
license plate holder to the indents that comprise the basic form of the rear
fascia.

“The diamond-cut elements enhance the sleek profile of the car,” said John
Manoogian II, director of exterior design for Cadillac. “The CTS Coupe uses the
elements, along with other nods to classic Cadillac cues – such as vertical
headlamps and taillamps – to acknowledge the brand’s heritage without resorting
to nostalgia. It is a forward-looking design in every sense of the term.”

Although based on the sedan, the CTS Coupe shares only the instrument panel,
console, headlamps, front fenders and grille with the production model.

The surfaces of CTS Coupe Concept are complex, inviting careful inspection. The
rear fenders, for example, were sculpted by hand in the design studio until they
provided a perfect, muscular form that wrapped tightly over the wheels. At the
top, the rear fenders are beveled – owing to the diamond-cut theme – and become
part of a horizontal plane that runs from the leading edge of the taillamps and
merges into the roof.

Personal Passenger Environment

A classic 2+2 interior environment enhances the CTS Coupe’s personal feel. It
shares the hand cut-and-sewn instrument panel and center console with the CTS,
but features unique front and rear seats, a continuous console running between
the front and rear seats, and custom door panels.

Custom-trimmed sport seats from Recaro are located in all four positions. They
support the grand-touring nature of the car and are covered in rich, black and
suede-like microfiber material, with yellow ochre-colored inserts. The yellow
ochre color provides dramatic contrast with the black surrounding trim, but is a
subdued hue consistent with the interior’s overall feeling of refinement. Yellow
ochre stitching also is used throughout, including the seats, instrument panel,
shifter knob and more.

Black microfiber fabric covers the front armrest, as well as an armrest located
between the rear seats. The armrests are part of a continuous console that
stretches from the instrument panel to rear seats. Carbon-fiber trim accents the
console. The interior also features ambient lighting throughout, creating a
distinctive environment at night.

Performance-Bred Powertrain and Suspension Systems

As is the case with its design, the CTS Coupe extends the acclaimed capabilities
of the sedan in terms of performance technology. This includes the capability to
support a broad engine range of gasoline and diesel engines.

The CTS Coupe, of course, ascertains the sedan’s 3.6L V-6 engines, including the
304-horsepower Direct Injection power plant. The Coupe Concept also is designed
for a new 2.9L turbo-diesel being developed for international markets. This new
engine, tailored for use in the CTS, will deliver an estimated 250 horsepower
and 406 lb-ft of torque.

A six-speed manual transmission backs the engine, sending torque to an
independently sprung rear axle. The CTS Coupe’s sport-tuned suspension gives it
a slightly lower ride height than a production CTS – a look enhanced by the
car’s rakish shape and large, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels.

Behind the chrome, split-spoke, aluminum alloy wheels is a set of
high-performance brakes, featuring cross-drilled rotors. Six-piston calipers
clamp down on the front rotors, while four-piston calipers grab the rear rotors.
All of the rotors have a distinctive, yellow-painted finish.

New Bond Needs Self-Parking Lexus

The new James Bond, Daniel Craig, might be good at driving that Aston Martin in Casino Royale, but it seems that he’s having a bit of trouble parking his brand new Cadillac Escalade he recently bought, which is one of the biggest 4X4 SUV’s in America. Neighbors said that the British celebrity had left his wheels at crazy angles and bumped up on the pavement. Action heroes are actually human beings after all.

2008 Chicago Auto Show: Winners and Losers

The doors are opening to the public at the Chicago Auto Show, and we would hate for you to head to the show without first learning which new production and concept cars won our hearts and minds. Chicago wasn’t as impressive as Detroit in either the number of debuts or their importance, but for economy-car buyers, muscle-car fans and families, there’s plenty to see. Cars.com’s David Thomas, Joe Wiesenfelder and Mike Hanley weigh in on each of them.

Would you ever buy a people-mover?

I ADMIT IT. I own a people-mover. There, I’ve said it.

Of course, I don’t call it a people-mover. I say station wagon, and only if absolutely cornered will I admit that it has two pop-up seats in the back.

I also tend to say, “We have a station wagon”. This more accurately represents the situation but it also seems to share the responsibility around. It distances me just that little bit more.

I don’t want to be overly defensive. But it’s fuel efficient and it’s about a tonne lighter than the full-sized four-wheel-drives and it can carry 2.5-metre lengths of timber and swallow a whole family and its luggage and … and … and on any practical level it’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Sorry, we’ve ever owned.

But it’s still a people-mover. On any night in some windy scout hall there are people sitting in a large circle coming to terms with the fact that they too are people-mover owners, but the situation isn’t hopeless.

You can learn to love your people-mover, albeit in the way one might love a really good stapler - “Wow, another large stack of paper successfully perforated and held together” - rather than, say, how you might love a curvaceous Ferrari that accelerates so quickly that your eyelids spin back like a pair of roller blinds that have been given a really good hoik on the string with the little circle thing at the bottom.

Do you own a people-mover already or would you consider one if you needed the room for a growing family?

Or is it one car you will never buy?

Mercedes-Benz releases details of SL 63 and SL 65 AMG

If that isn’t powerful enough, then there’s the SL 65 AMG, with a 612bhp, 738lb-ft twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12. This is good for 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds and 155mph; more of a high-speed luxury cruiser than the V8, it has the five-speed AMG Speedshift transmission with limited-slip differential, plus larger brake discs and different titanium grey twin-spoke 19″ wheels. Unique design touches include ‘V12 Biturbo’ lettering on the front wings, diamond-patterned nappa leather upholstery, and ‘V12 Biturbo’ lettering on the rev counter.

Options on offer with both the SL 63 and SL 65 include an exterior carbon-fibre package, with carbon-fibre front apron air vents, exterior mirror housings, spoiler lip and diffuser insert, a smaller flat-bottomed steering wheel, illuminated door sill panels and different wheel designs. The SL 63 AMG is also offered with the Performance Package: internally ventilated composite front brake discs (390mm diameter), a multiple-disc limited-slip rear differential, 19″ forged light-alloy wheels, further-tuned sports suspension and the flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Both models will be launched in the UK in April; prices will be announced nearer to the on-sale date.

The Ultimate Corvette

There is no denying that the Corvette is an impressive sports car. With a powerful 400-horsepower V8 engine, classic styling, comfortable interior and excellent handling, what more could one want in an American sports car? So if you had a Corvette with even better handling, more aggressive styling and 105 more horses on tap, would it be any better? Absolutely!!!

That, of course, would be the all-new Corvette Z06. At first glance, it looks like any other Corvette, however those in the know will recognize it immediately. It has an air intake just ahead of the hood, larger rear fender flares with additional air scoops, and unique alloy wheels, and larger exhaust. Of course, there’s also the Z06 badge on the side that has red text on it telling the most important part of the story – 505 HP.

Yes, under the hood is Chevrolet’s LS7 7.0-liter V8 engine that pumps out 505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This in a car that weighs just 3,000 lbs. 60 mph comes up in just 3.6 seconds; top speed is close to 200 mph. This is the fastest production ‘Vette ever.

But unlike the Viper, which has similar performance numbers, the Z06 is a civilized ride. It doesn’t cook you like the Viper, although after a long drive, the center console did get pretty toasty. The clutch is not heavy – your leg doesn’t hurt after sitting in traffic. Seats are very comfortable, and it drives smoothly at 40 or 140.

I had the opportunity to drive the Z06 from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA - about 190 miles. Even with some stop and go traffic, I averaged an impressive 22 mpg. This is from a 505 horsepower supercar! This is primarily because at 80 mph in 6th gear, the engine is only turning about 1800 rpm. Although, I have to say it’s really hard to cruise along at 80 when you know the car can go twice that speed.

But cruising down the highway at 80 is not what this car is about, even if it does it well. This car is about shifting into 2nd gear at 30 mph, flooring it and having the rear wheels break loose. The V8 sounds fantastic, and acceleration is incredible. It has excellent grip, and when the wheels break free, it’s still controllable. I’ve never driven this car at the track, but it must be phenomenal.

Where the Viper would make a great 3rd or 4th car, the Corvette Z06 could easily be a daily driver. It has a good amount of cargo space, storage pockets in the doors, plenty of room for every day stuff.

And with a starting price around $70,000, this car is an incredible deal. Especially when you compare it to Viper ($83,000) or Porsche 911 Turbo ($123.000).  Definitely one of the more impressive cars I’ve driven.
