Next-Generation Honda Pilot Balances Ideal Combination of SUV Strengths and On-road Refinement

A prototype of the next-generation Honda Pilot is being unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The prototype conveys design features of the more boldly-styled 2009 Pilot, set to debut in spring 2008, which emphasizes authentic SUV styling, clever and more accommodating interior packaging and advanced technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and convenience.

“The Pilot’s pioneering formula improves for 2009 by enhancing its combination of refinement and efficiency with even more traditional SUV strengths,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “A powerful exterior design communicates strength and allows for more space inside.”

Functional eight-passenger seating, a hallmark of the Pilot, becomes even easier to access in the third row as key dimensions for legroom, cargo and occupant space increase in all seating positions. A redesigned platform allows even more refined handling and ride comfort to exist seamlessly with all-weather and medium-duty off-road capabilities.

To further enhance safety, the Pilot will feature the Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineeringā„¢ (ACEĀ®) body structure and the most extensive use of high-strength steel in any Honda product to date.

The ACE body structure enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. A pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle is designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision.

A crossover SUV platform underpins the Pilot to provide the best of the car and truck worlds by integrating the refined traits and packaging advantages of a unit body car design with the utility and capability of an SUV design. A V-6 engine introduces the latest generation of Honda fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Managementā„¢ (VCMĀ®) technology that operates in 6-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, an improvement compared to the existing Pilot’s available VCM system that works exclusively in 6- and 3-cylinder modes.

Three rows of seats provide a high degree of adaptability for people and large cargo loads. The first row provides a commanding view of the road from two captains’ chairs. A wide center stack and center console form the styling anchor for the interior with a design that emphasizes spaciousness and power, while allowing for convenient access to navigation, entertainment and climate-control systems.

The 60/40 split second row, now more spacious, slides further forward for increased ease of access to the third row. The 60/40 split third row, now supplies enough knee room for an above-average-sized adult male to fit comfortably, making the Pilot’s third row among the most practical in the industry. Each side of the second and third row independently folds down for cargo. A flat floor is created when the second and third rows are folded down.

The Pilot originally debuted as a 2003 model in July of 2002. Design and development of the 2003 Pilot and the 2009 Pilot were carried out at Honda R&D Americas in Raymond, Ohio, and Torrance, California. The Pilot is assembled* at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln.

Among its numerous accolades, the Honda Pilot has earned Car and Driver Magazine’s prestigious “5Best Truck” award on six consecutive occasions (2002-2007). The current-generation 2008 Pilot is also among an elite group of vehicles to receive both a “Top Safety Pick 2008″ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star crash safety rating for frontal and side collisions from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)**.

* Honda products are produced using domestic and globally-sourced parts.

** Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov. Model tested with standard side-impact airbags.)

Name your top ten songs about cars

What is it about cars and music?

If you look at the biggest pop acts of the last fifty years, almost every one has written a song about cars or driving.

The Beatles had ā€œDrive My Carā€, the Rolling Stones had ā€œRoute 66ā€ and the Beach Boys ā€œLittle Deuce Coupeā€.

Then there was Wilson Pickett’s ā€œMustang Sallyā€, the Eagles’ ā€œLife in the Fast Laneā€ and even the Cars’ ā€œDriveā€. And who could forget John Travolta’s ā€œGreased Lightningā€.

Don McLean drove his Chevy to the levy, Hot Chocolate sang about heaven in the back seat of a Cadillac and Janis Joplin begged for someone to buy her a Mercedes-Benz.

More recently there was Prince with ā€œLittle Red Corvetteā€, Tracy Chapman with ā€œFast Carā€ and Meatloaf with ā€œParadise by the Dashboard Lightā€.

A few Aussie bands have also got in on the act. Mental as Anything sung about a Hemi Pacer in ā€œLooking for Birdā€ and the Ted Mulry Gang had a huge hit with ā€œJump in My Carā€.

But the biggest award for revhead rockers goes to Radio Birdman for this love song written by Denis Tek about a 455-SD Trans Am.

ā€œI got a dream machine from the Promised Land, got a ‘71 Trans Am

Got a Hurst T-stick in my hand, Borg Warner 4-speed says I can

Do the standing quarter mile in 12.5, run it through bring tears to your eyes…”

Music to my ears.

What are your top ten songs about driving?

Ken confirms congestion charge changes

Transport for London has confirmed that from 27 October, drivers of high-emission vehicles into central London will have to pay a £25 charge each day, while cars qualifying for Band B tax (those emitting less than 120g/km of carbon dioxide) can enter the city for free.

Cars liable for the Ā£25 charge are those in tax band G (226g/km or more) as well as those registered before March 2001 which have engines larger than 3,000cc. The charge will affect a number of large luxury saloons, high-performance sports cars and big MPVs, plus large SUVs, 4×4s and double-cab pick-ups. As a further disincentive to own such vehicles, the 90% discount for residents within the charging zone will also be removed.

Hemi Thunder

Chrysler reacted swiftly. They released a street hemi in the 1966 Belvedere, Satellite and Dodge Charger lines and campaigned the elephant engine in USAC and NHRA events to demonstrate that it was fully capable of endurance and speed trials. Plymouth released an upscale Belvedere package called GTX in 1967 to market the new Super Commando 440 big block. The hemi was the only other mill available. Just 720 buyers took that route in 1967 making a hemi GTX a valuable ride today.

True “sport” utility

I have found what I believe to be is the perfect blend of sports and utility. And no, it’s not a sport utility vehicle. It’s the Audi S4 Avant. For those of you not aware, Avant is Audi’s term for station wagon. Not exactly sure what it means, but it was introduced several years ago when the term ā€˜station wagon’ was a bad thing.

Audis seem to keep popping up on my ā€œI wish I owned one of theseā€ list. The last one was the amazing RS4, and now this one.

Basically, Audi has taken a 340-horsepower all-wheel drive sport sedan and put an enclosed cargo space on the back.

The V8 has a powerful growl that sounds good at any RPM. The 6-speed manual can be shifted incredibly quickly. And the Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system combined with a very stiff chassis makes this wagon handle as well as, if not better than, many sports cars.

And the best part is you don’t have to make any sacrifices in utility. You can carry two adults in the back seat in relative comfort, and there’s plenty of cargo space in the back.

Price is around $50k, but for that you get two cars – a very impressive sports car as well as a versatile station wagon.

2008 Audi S5

The S5 is the high-performance version of Audi’s new A5 four-seat coupe that joins the Audi lineup for 2008 between the redesigned TT coupe and the R8 supercar to give Audi a complete line of performance coupes. The S5 incorporates many elements from the Nuvolari concept of 2003 for a combination of elegance and sportiness that Walter de’Silva, head of Volkswagen Group Design, describes as Ć¢Ā€Āœthe most beautiful car I have ever designed.Ć¢Ā€Ā Nuvolari design elements include Audi’s trademark trapezoidal grille framed by rectangular headlights, a very thick C-pillar, frameless windows, and a waistline that flows upwards around the wheel arches to give the car a dynamic, sporty character.

Brock takes on the Mountain

Michael Brock is set to take on the 6.2km racing circuit at Mount Panorama.

Australia’s longest motor racing track, the 6.2km circuit up and down Mount Panorama at Bathurst is a lot of real estate to cover in a 12-hour race.

Especially in a little four-cylinder Japanese buzz-bomb.

But Adelaide real estate identity and motorsport enthusiast Michael Brock will squeeze his tall frame into his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII to take on the mountain in Sunday’s 2008 WPS Bathurst 12-hour.

The race is for GT Performance cars based on production cars and more closely reflects road cars than does the Bathurst 1000 race for V8 Supercars in October.

Brock is a winning name at Bathurst. And not just the late Peter Brock. South Australia’s only driver in this year’s 12-hour, Michael Brock, has won there before, taking out the two-hour race in a 46-car field in 2002 co-driving his Evo VIII with Garry Young.

Young, a championship-rated driver in the category, has been signed as a co-driver this time too.

The third driver will be former rugby league star turned car racer Jack Elsegood, who only missed winning the V8 Utes title last year because of a flat tyre on the penultimate lap of the last race of the year.

ā€œThe car has been totally rebuilt,ā€ Brock said yesterday of his Coopers-green Lancer.

ā€œSteve Knight has prepared the car, the turbo has got more boost and it’s now quicker.”

ā€œWhat’s exciting is that a few months ago at Mallala in a one-hour race it beat the car that won the Bathurst 12-hour last year.ā€

That Mallala result encouraged him to enter the Bathurst 12-hour and he has secured sponsorship from Coopers Brewery, which used to back Brock in V8 Ute racing.

Other sponsors are his own real estate firm Brock Harcourts and the Wellington Hotel at North Adelaide. ā€œWe’re expecting to be competitive,ā€ Brock said.

Brock has been on an intensive gym program to get fit and ready to take the physical stress of racing the mountain track in a very hot cabin on a February day.

He acknowledges that Elsegood and Young are more race-ready, and younger, and might do the greater share of the driving.

The plan is for drivers to do 90-minute stints - quite a task in the heat when you come out to do it again and again over the 12 hours.
