Top Gear going on World Tour

While Top Gear spin-offs are planned for Australia and the U.S., it seems that the same people that put on the MPH show abroad will be bringing the “spills and thrills” of Top Gear to 15 countries around the world. The locations and dates aren’t set yet, but since the BBC was specific that Clarkson, May and Hammond would only be appearing during the British leg of the show, don’t expect to see your three favorite motoring presenters here in the States anytime soon.

Thanks to all who tipped in.

Behind the Wheel: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL550

Tough day. Been driving the restyled, revised 2009 Benz SL in the mountains outside LA and down to Palm Springs, where we’re holed up for the night. Work, work, work. Anyone want to trade places with me? Ah, always the same hands…

I’m joking about the toughness of my assignment, of course. The SL550 remains as delectable as ever, one of the world’s best all-around luxury/sports cars — 382 horsepower, controlled but compliant ride (aided by Active Body Control), superb comfort, peerless prestige, that cake-and-eat-it-too power-folding hardtop. New refinements mostly push it even further up the desirability index.

Mercedes-Benz is revving up its U.S. market diesel push by offering its ML320 BlueTEC, GL320 BlueTEC, and R320 BlueTEC diesels to American consumers before any other market gets the vehicles. All three Benzes are powered by a 3.0-liter, 211 horsepower turbo V-6 generating 398 lb-ft of torque. Mated to Benz’s seven-speed automatic transmission, all three people-movers will meet the U.S. Bin 5 standard as well the European EU6 standard, Mercedes says.

Think City

The Think City goes on sale at the end of 2008 with the ability to drive over 100 miles on one charge and hit 60mph. It also looks, steers and, so we’re promised, crashes like a modern city car. If it looks familiar, then you remember Ford’s aborted eco project. This is that same car six years on, back in Norwegian hands and brought bang up to date.
