XM’s New NavWeather Service To Debut on 2009 Acura TSX and RL

NEW YORK — XM announced on Wednesday at the 2008 New York Auto Show that its real-time NavWeather will debut first on the 2009 Acura TSX and RL. The system was unveiled earlier this year at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, but XM had remained mum up to this point about which vehicles would be the first to get the high-tech offering.

The XM NavWeather service will be available as part of the TSX and RL’s technology package that includes an Acura navigation system.

XM’s new system uses “Threat Matrix” technology to give immediate alerts on developing weather conditions, such as hail, tornado and storm warnings, mapped to the driver’s specific location and driving route.

What this means to you: Acura TSX and RL drivers get first pick at some hot new technology. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Honda Becomes Official Vehicle of PGA National Resort & Spa
Home of the Honda Classic to feature Honda automobiles year-round

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and PGA National Resort & Spa have entered into a three-year agreement naming Honda as the official vehicle of PGA National Resort & Spa, the companies announced today. Building upon a relationship started in 2007 with the hosting of the Honda Classic golf tournament, the resort will now feature Honda vehicles on display, as shuttle vehicles, for limited test-drives, and even as a perk of staying in the newly designated Honda Suite.

“Golf is a favorite pastime of many Honda owners, and the Honda Classic has become a highly anticipated stop on the PGA Tour,” said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. “Bringing Honda vehicles to PGA National Resort & Spa full-time offers the perfect opportunity to build upon Honda’s already great golfing legacy.”

The three-year agreement with PGA National Resort & Spa includes provisions for on-site displays of Honda vehicles, consumer-based promotions associated with Honda, advertising on in-room TV channels and renaming of select resort venues. This includes the new outdoor pavilion (now called the “Honda Pavilion”) which overlooks the 18th hole of the Championship Course.

Boasting a new multi-million dollar renovation, world-class European spa, five championship golf courses, seven spectacular restaurants and lounges and a wide array of meeting and event facilities, PGA National Resort & Spa is home to the Honda Classic golf tournament. It’s a retreat that provides leisure and business travelers with experiences both exciting and memorable.

2008 New York Auto Show: 2009 Nissan Maxima

  • Competes with: Toyota Avalon, Buick Lucerne, Chrysler 300
  • Looks like: One really miffed Altima
  • Drivetrain: 290-hp (est.), 3.5-liter V-6 with CVT automatic
  • Hits dealerships: Early summer 2008

The Nissan Maxima, a car whose future was once precarious, is evidently alive and well. Nissan will unveil the seventh-generation Maxima at this week’s New York auto show, and it says its aim in redesigning this car was nothing less than to create the best-performing front-wheel-drive sedan in the world. There are tall orders, but this one seems like a veritable Everest.

To work, then: The car’s width has been increased, but its wheelbase has been shortened, which should bode well for handling. The brakes are larger, and Nissan has uprated its venerable 3.5-liter V-6 to 290 hp, up from 255 hp last year. A continuously variable automatic transmission continues to be standard — in the outgoing Maxima, it proved surprisingly responsive — and has manual and Sport modes. Paddle shifters are optional.

We can’t say we’re crazy about the car’s styling. It’s something of an angrier Altima in front and (here comes the hate mail) a larger Toyota Yaris sedan in back. Like with the earlier Maxima, though, we figure the shape will grow on us. There’s plenty of eye candy inside, where the dashboard borrows themes from the Altima sedan and various Infiniti models. The navigation system uses the setup from the Infiniti M35/M45 and G35 sedans rather than the Altima’s simpler system, and that’s a good thing. Loaded Maximas (Maximae?) boast everything from a backup camera and heated steering wheel to a panoramic moonroof with power-retracting sunshades. That should put the car on par with full-size sedans like the Toyota Avalon and Buick Lucerne, if not entry-level luxury cars like the Lexus ES.

The ’09 Maxima hits dealerships in just a few months. We have the first shots from the auto show floor below and will be updating the gallery throughout the day.

Chinese cars on the way

Importer Ateco has confirmed that the Chinese-made brand Chery is coming down under.

After three years of negotiations, the two companies have signed a distribution deal and the first cars will arrive in the first quarter of next year.

Chinese cars generally have a reputation for dodgy quality and poor crash protection, although Ateco managing director Ric Hull says they will comply with all Australian Design Rules.

The million-dollar question is, will Australians buy them?

If the price is right, I suspect they will. Ateco has the runs on the board, too. The importer successfully established the Kia brand in Australia before Kia head office took over control in 2005. Prior to that Ric Hull was involved in setting up the Hyundai and Daewoo businesses in Australia.

Hull says the cars may not necessarily be the cheapest in the market (we’ll believe that when we see it) but they will offer the best value for money.

Let’s hope that means lots of standard safety equipment and decent quality.

Do you think Chery will be a success in Australia? I guess we’ve come to except all sorts of Chinese-made consumer goods in recent years, but will people take the same leap of faith with such a big ticket purchase?

Bentley Continental Flying Spur

Friday was a pretty good day. That was the day they delivered to me a Bentley Continental Flying Spur to drive over the weekend.

This is the newest model from the famed British marque, a luxurious 4-door sedan based on the Continental GT coupe. While not as sleek-looking as the coupe, the Flying Spur is still a beautiful car. And it should be given its price of around $175,000 - of course that’s somewhat inexpensive for a Bentley. The classic hand-built Arnage goes for well  over $200k.

Inside the Flying Spur are very comfortable seats that are covered in soft leather and can be heated, cooled, and adjusted multiple ways. They even have seat massagers. Dark wood trim and brushed aluminum accents provide an elegant look. Rear seats have impressive legroom, and each seating position has its own climate control.

Equipped with “Keyless Go”, the driver just keeps the key in his or her pocket. When you touch the door handle, it unlocks the car (touching the Bentley logo on the trunk activates the power trunk lid opener). Once inside, you put your foot on the brake and push the start button.

There’s something about the sound of 12 cylinders coming to life that makes me smile every time. And that’s what makes this car so special.

Under the hood is a 6.0-liter W12 engine with two turbochargers which puts out an impressive 552 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque at just 1600 rpm. All this power is pushed through a sophisticated all-wheel drive system.

According to Bentley, the Flying Spur will hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and has a top speed of 195 mph, making it the fastest production 4-door sedan in the world. I haven’t had it up to 195, but after feeling that accelleraion, there’s no doubt in my mind that it could hit those numbers.

And not only is it fast, but it handles amazingly well, especially for a car that weighs more than 2 1/2 tons.

Its a high price to pay for a car, and there are others for less that have similar performance and luxury, but they woudn’t say Bentley on them. And ultimately, its that exclusivity (and the 552 hp engine) that you’re paying for.

Dirty drive a laugh for Timo

It didn’t take Timo Glock long to start speaking like an Aussie.

The rookie Toyota Grand Prix driver emerged from the dust-covered rally car, uttering his first Australian colloquialism.

“It’s bloody warm in there,” he joked yesterday. “But it’ll be good experience for Malaysia.”

The young German clearly enjoyed his experience at the helm of Australian rally champion Neal Bates’ Super 2000 Corolla, despite the boiling heat at Werribee four-wheel drive park.

Glock believes race day, with an expected temperature of 35, will be hard on drivers.

“It could play a role in the race,” he said. “But it is good practice for Malaysia, which will also be hot, but humid as well.”

Glock, who replaced Ralf Schumacher in the Toyota Motorsport team at the end of last season, is clearly aiming for consistency this year and has modest expectations for his first start in Melbourne.

“I just want to finish the race,” he said. “It’d be nice to be in the points straight from the first race though. But at the end it is completely new for me.”

Glock won his chance with Toyota, the biggest-budget team in F1, after claiming victory in last year’s GP2 feeder class. He has been in F1 before with the tail-ender Jordan team, but never as a full-time racer or against an established ace like his new team-mate Jarno Trulli.

“I did three or four races in 2004 but that’s quite a long time ago,” he said. “Expectations should be to take it easy, have a good weekend and try to get close to Jarno because at the moment he’s really quick.”

Road Test: Toyota Hilux

Showroom success today often comes down to the buyer being able to do two jobs with one vehicle.

So we have coupes that are convertibles, all-wheel-drives that are people movers, and sedans that are sports cars.

It’s the same in the commercial vehicle world, where a growing number of people want a workhorse for the week and a toy for weekends.

It’s this combination that’s made the SS Commodore and XR Falcon utes so popular with tradesmen and extreme sports fanatics.

But things have gone further and Holden has a hit on its hands with the Crewman, a classy cross between a ute and a four-door Commodore sedan.

It’s not a new idea. Many Japanese companies produce one-tonne workhorses with double-cab bodies, but the Holden is forcing its rivals to become better at both jobs.

So along comes the latest Toyota Hilux.

There are 30 models in the line-up, priced from $20,990.

But Toyota is not going to settle for sales at the bargain end of the action. It wants to sell something to everyone as well as create a new image for its working-class hero.

It is obvious in the advertising and it’s just as obvious in the bolder body.

But there is even more to the story because the Hilux has been born from a new Toyota project called the Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle.

The idea is to create three vehicles, including a people mover, from the same basic mechanical package, saving money and allowing them all to be built at the one factory in Thailand.

It is a big deal for Toyota and it should – should – mean a better deal on the vehicles in showrooms, as well as access to the people mover and four-wheel drive to come.

It’s easy to go on and on about the Hilux because there is so much to talk about: so many models, so many engines and so many body choices, with either rear or four-wheel drive.

But the basics are petrol and diesel motors up to 4.0 litres; single, extended and double-cab bodies; Work Mate, SR and SR5 equipment levels; and prices all the way up to $51,850.

But the hero is easy to choose. It is the Hilux SR5, which is the closest in style and function to an SS or XR ute. There are nine SR5 models.

It is being pushed because Toyota Australia’s research shows about 35 per cent of Aussie utes never go to work, and only 20 per cent of Hilux owners take their utes playing. So that’s a big area for potential growth.

“Sports utilities have become a status symbol and in some instances they’re the new sports cars,” Toyota Australia sales and marketing head Dave Buttner says.

“More people are choosing to buy pick-ups as their daily and sports transport.”

It is a repeat of the pattern in the United States and it shows why the new Hilux is a full size larger than the previous model. It has more power, a more refined suspension and more equipment, including twin airbags.

ON THE ROAD

The biggest question that needs answering in a Hilux test has nothing to do with the vehicle.

It’s all about picking which version of the vehicle. There are too many choices.

This time around, since the Hilux would be driven mostly during the V8 Supercar weekend in Perth, we decided to tick all the boxes. We also wanted to know how the Toyota hero would shape up against Holden’s Crewman, even if you cannot get a Hilux with a V8.

So we settled on an SR5 double cab with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, and it was delivered in basic black. Just the sort of thing a successful painter might have for their work-and-play motoring.

The bottom line came in at $49,850, close to the Crewman Cross6 at $44,490, but a significant step up from rivals including the Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and even Holden’s Rodeo.

Part of that is down to the price premium Toyota can always put on the class leader – it has been ahead in sales and driving for generations – and part is down to the size and equipment upgrade on the latest model.

The styling and equipment made the biggest impact when we collected the Hilux. Oh, and the 200kg of sandbags the Toyota people had put in the tray to settle the ride and handling.

The Hilux looks a lot bigger and tougher and that will give it an important weapon to combat the Rodeo, which got a similar upgrade last year. We had previously rated the Rodeo V6 as our work star, though the Commodore utes and Crewman are good for play.

The Toyota cabin is much more car-like than before, but the size surprised. It looks and feels much more like a four-door sedan than a basic ute stretch. We enjoyed lounging in the back seat.

The downside is that the ute tray is more like a Crewman than a giant workbed, though Toyota says it will hold a motorcycle and do the job for weekday work.

The Hilux SR5 rides surprisingly well – wonder how it would have been without the sand? – and handling is fine. It soaked up bumps and did well on gravel roads, though we didn’t have the chance for any serious four-wheel driving.

Based on previous models, the Hilux should be fine in the bush.

But the city SR6 has a perky V6 engine and even comes with a manual-style auto change and cruise control. It is not as sporty as the Crewman, but has far more space and feels tougher.

It will be a winner for Toyota and a winner with a lot of new owners – once they find their way out of the model maze.

THE BOTTOM LINE

It looks like a tougher truck, but the new Hilux drives more like a car. Lined up against the Rodeo and the rest, the new Hilux has reset the benchmark, right down to a turning circle that doesn’t feel like a truck.

Proton plans on prolific future

One new model a year for the next five years; that is the confident promise from the new head of Proton Cars.

Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir says the Malaysian carmaker has turned the corner and is ready for growth. Proton has chosen China, India, Russia and the Middle East for satellite production bases.

It is also closing on an alliance with a big carmaker after failed talks with Volkswagen, Peugeot and General Motors.

Proton is expected to go with Mitsubishi in an ambitious deal that should increase its products and allow it to reach its sales target of 10,000 cars a year in Australia.

“The future looks better today,” says managing director Syed. “We are coming out with a series of models that are priced right and meet market requirements. The future is going to be really good but, at the same time, we are realistic in our approach.”

Syed was at the Melbourne motor show to research the Australian car industry and the opposition his brand faces.

He knows the company’s 1.3- and 1.6-litre engines are small by local standards but hopes the price of fuel will make Proton more attractive.

“Australia is very peculiar because of the requirement for large engines,” he says.

“We need to be careful that the car fits into what the market needs.”

Proton also plans a people mover and larger cars, probably in a deal with Mitsubishi.

And it will probably rename the Gen.2 hatch as a second Persona to realign its local line-up and add the compact Saga sedan for $13,990.

The first of the newcomers, the Persona sedan, will be here next month.

“We have a program that will have a new car every year from now on. Last year we launched the Persona; this year is the Saga,” Syed says.

“Next year will be an MPV, then a Waja replacement, then a D-segment car. So, as we go along, at least for the next five years, there will be a new product every year.”
