VW-Sponsored Olympic Torch Run Begins

In one of life’s little ironies, Volkswagen is this year’s “Official Vehicle” of Adolf Hitler’s forgotten brainchild, the Olympic Torch Relay. With riots on the streets in Lhasa and reports of terrorism threats in China already marring the feel-good “One World, One Dream” vibes, the torch run was supposed to be a major  PR effort for the Chinese government and major sponsors. But things are not quite going to plan. The Guardian reports that pro-Tibet protesters broke a “tight security cordon” at Thursday’s torch lighting ceremony, and are now planning multiple protests along the relay route. The convoy has already been held up several times due to protesters lying in front of the Vee-Dubs, and the Greek government is upping security in response to specific threats over the weekend. And the caravan of love hasn’t even come close to the Nepal area yet where soldiers are already deploying to deal with protests. Maybe someone just needs to let everyone know that it’s all good, man… these are green Volkswagens.

CAW Prez Buzz Hargrove Says No to Two-Tier Wages. Again. Still.

Stop me when this sounds familiar. Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) boss Buzz Hargrove says his brotherhood is “committed to get at the costs” that Canada one of the the world’s most expensive places to build cars. Yes, well weakening Canada’s currency is quite an ambitious undertaking. And “getting at” costs is one thing; reducing them another. The Globe and Mail reaffirms that Hargrove’s legendary intransigence tough stance continues. Buzz’ boyz won’t agree to the North American template, that sees significant wage and benefits reductions for car assembling newbies. Buzz figures “It’s my last set of negotiations and my legacy is not going to be that the sons and daughters of current workers that were hired over 20 years ago are going to come in at the same rate in 2008 as their parents did in ‘86 or ‘87.” To that end AOL Money Canada reports Buzz’ boyz are strike-ready if the two-tiered wage thang becomes a sticking point. Did I say “if?”

Biodiesel From Pond Scum

With all of the downsides of corn-based biofuel now widely known, eco-friendly motorists are anxious to hear a little good news from the developers of so-called second-generation biofuels. One of the most promising of these new, non-food-based fuels comes from algae, which scientists have been breeding and researching since the Carter Administration. The March cover story at Green Fuels Forecast tells of the National Renewable Energy Labs Aquatic Species Program (ASP), which has been looking for biodiesel-producing algae since 1978, and is now providing the backbone of technology for some frenzied venture capital activity. When the program started, it was estimated that all of America’s transportation and home-heating needs could be met by 15k square miles of algae farms. Of course in the 90’s as petroleum costs dipped, the Clinton Administration axed the ASP in favor of further ethanol research. Now, the government’s abandoned investment is attracting the big boys: Chevron, Shell and others are forming partnerships with start-ups who are building on the ASP’s knowledge base. The upsides? Algae needs only sun and C02 to produce the oil which can be burned as fuel or used in a number of other applications which currently require petroleum products. In other words, the perfect fuel source for your favorite Waterworld-esque, post-apocalyptic fantasy.

Dzire

Every now and then a model name raises an eyebrow or a smile. It was the latter in the case of Suzuki’s new Swift-based booted saloon for India: Dzire. Great name. I can imagine that name working for a modern-day pop artist, another so-called ’soul diva’ that’s flavour of the month. Perhaps Dzire has already gone platinum and is now happily semi-retired in Barbados at the ripe old age of 25. There again, maybe she’s still cutting her teeth in showbiz. ’She’s young, she’s hot, she’s got a great voice and she put an ice bucket over Gordon Brown’s head at the Baftas last week! Hang on to your hats folks and let’s hear it for…Dzire!’

To get back to earth for a moment, the Suzuki Dzire is another sign of just how competitive the Indian marketplace is becoming and also how determined Suzuki is to hang on to market leadership (Tata’s Nano onslaught still to come). Seven model launches in three years is going some.

Cost Of Feeding Pigs & Poultry & Alternative Ingredients

Via
AllAboutFeed.net

Globally, the face of pig and poultry production is changing. The global emphasis on ethanol production has diverted significant proportions of grain away from animal production, thus increasing the cost of feed. This has forced the pig and poultry industries to scrutinise their production methods investigating alternative feed ingredients together with methods of improving productivity and efficiency in order to survive.

    Our Cars–1980 Ford Courier

Submitted by Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame

Much of the appeal of Car Lust is the emotional connection made between cars and people. It is the memories that tie us to some fairly unappealing vehicles, and it is the anecdotes about those memories that draw me back to Car Lust every day.

One Car Lust wasn’t a conscious Lust until I started thinking about all the cars I’ve ever had extensive experience with … and then the Lust for a Ford Courier blazed up brightly.

Our family obtained a 1980 Ford Courier around 1982, I think. In any case, it wasn’t new because I don’t remember my parents ever purchasing a new vehicle. It was in excellent condition, however, with a camper shell over the bed. In 1984 I talked my parents into using it to haul our pop-up trailer and two of my friends on a 5-hour trip to the Medicine Rocks Campground outside of Ekalaka, Montana.

Five people in a two-seater mini-pickup? Well, the three teens go in back, of course. We were able to spread our sleeping bags and stretch out quite comfortably among the coolers and other bundles. I remember snacking on Oreos, for what it’s worth. I guess my Dad wasn’t worried about the dangers of carbon monoxide build-up inside the cover, but his lack of worries were justified–we survived the trip just fine.

In time, I inherited the truck. It had a manual transmission, which made it quite peppy when accelerating from a complete stop. I learned to drive a stick in it, and in what I think is typical youthful idiocy, I practiced getting to full speed from a complete stop in 2nd gear, then 3rd, and even from 4th once. Okay, more than once. It’s possible with an extremely liberal use of clutch, of course. And yet, the transmission and clutch never slipped, never needed replacing even as the mileage approached 140,000.

In high school, my girlfriend(s) would sit close to me and we’d do tandem shifting, i.e., after I pressed in the clutch, she’d shift gears when I said “shift.â€

I drove it to college, and was able to fit every single thing I owned in the world in the bed to a height that still let me see out the back window, which served me well in several moves between dorms and student apartments. And when my fraternity pledge class needed transportation, we managed to cram 12 adult males in the camper shell.

Throughout its life with me behind the wheel, I would get close to 34 mpg, but that was mostly highway driving. Even in my teens, I liked to take long drives.

The truck finally met its demise (insurance-wise … the truck itself was still easily road-worthy) when a woman across the intersection turned left after not seeing me. The car suffered a mighty blow behind the driver’s door but in front of the rear wheel-well. The damage was enough to take my pickup away from me. But I certainly had fun, fun, fun until then.

    –Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame

(note from Chris–I found these photos of similar Couriers from Flickr user dave_7. Not only are these great Courier pictures, but it appears that he has Car Lust-worthy taste as well, judging by the photo of a “mint” Mercury Zephyr.)

Formula 1 Ace Lewis Hamilton Could Receive a $4 Million Car for Winning

WOKING, England — The head of McLaren-Mercedes Racing has promised Formula 1 driver Louis Hamilton an extremely rare supercar if he can win championships in 2008 and 2009, according to British tabloid The Sun. The car, a McLaren F1 LM, is one of only five built off the McLaren F1 supercar and is estimated to be worth $4 million.

Hamilton has called the F1 LM his dream car, saying he fell in love with it when he first visited McLaren at the age of 13. The car is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 that makes 670 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. The driver sits in the center of the car, while two passenger seats are actually molded into the car’s body and set behind and to the sides of the driver.

The F1 LM’s Papaya Orange exterior paint was inspired by Bruce McLaren’s Formula 1 and Can-Am cars. The incentive was offered by Ron Dennis, team principal of McLaren racing and chairman and CEO of the larger McLaren Group.

In 1999, a McLaren F1 LM set a world record for accelerating from a stop to 100 mph and back to a stop in 11.5 seconds. The record has since been beaten.

What this means to you: We knew McLaren’s competitive spirit knew few bounds, but this is one heck of a worker incentive. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent

All-new 2009 Honda Fit Introduces New Realm of Refinement to Subcompact Class
New Fit further refines interior functionality, enhances sporty feel, and adds safety features

The all-new 2009 Honda Fit, set to go on sale in the U.S. this fall, is making its U.S. debut at the New York International Auto Show, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The Fit promises to further its leadership in the subcompact segment with top-of-class feature content, including an available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation Systemâ„¢; improved interior functionality, including one-motion dive-down rear seats; enhanced sporty demeanor through improved suspension, steering and body rigidity; and high levels of standard safety equipment, including Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineeringâ„¢ (ACEâ„¢) body structure.

“Critics and customers alike have voted the Fit among the best small vehicles on the road,” said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. “This new Fit raises the bar even further, taking what was already great about the Fit, making it even better and throwing in a healthy dose of refinement.”

    Enhanced Comfort and Convenience

Dimensionally compact on the outside, the interior provides surprisingly large passenger and class-leading cargo space to maximize comfort and utility. At the foundation is an improved rear Magic Seat®, now featuring one-motion dive-down functionality, which allows the rear seat to fold flat with the front seats in the rearmost slide position and without removing the rear head restraints. The seats offer multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations (tall object mode, long object mode and utility mode) in addition to the standard five-passenger mode. Additionally, a new hidden storage bin under the driver’s side rear seat provides a place to store small items.

Adding further refinement, Fit Sport offers an available factory-installed Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition, featuring a 6.5-inch screen. All Fit Sport models feature a USB audio interface1 compatible with current generation iPods® and many USB storage devices.

“The goal is to provide entry-level vehicle customers with functionality and refinement that’s a class above,” said Colliver. “Buying a Fit is a choice, not a compromise.”

    Fun to Drive

The Fit features a new 1.5-literi-VTECâ„¢ 4-cylinder engine connected to either a 5-speed manual transmission or an available 5-speed automatic transmission, which includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the Fit Sport. The new engine is designed to offer the best balance of fuel economy and power. Larger 15-inch and 16-inch (Fit Sport) wheels hint at enhancements to the Fit’s suspension, steering and body rigidity, which are intended to produce sportier handling without sacrificing comfort.

    Top-of-Class Standard Safety Equipment

The 2009 Fit adds Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology, available Vehicle Stability Assist â„¢ (VSA®) and active head restraints, to a top-of-class list of standard safety features. With Fit’s adoption of ACE, more than 94 percent of Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. will include the innovative body structure. When introduced to the 2009 Fit, VSA will be available in the lineup of every model Honda sells in the United States. Dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, dual front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) and side-curtain airbags are standard equipment on all Fit models. All seating positions have three-point seat belts. Additionally, front and rear visibility is improved.

Standard active safety equipment includes an anti-lock braking system (ABS), with ventilated discs in the front and drums in the back, and electronic brake distribution (EBD).

More detailed information about the 2009 Honda Fit will be released closer to the vehicle launch in the fall.
