Found on YJA: T78 Aristo

Another cool Yahoo Japan find here-

Here we have a relatively sedate looking JZS161 Aristo. It looks much like a standard VIP car and the only real sign of the devil lurking underneath is the large brake calipers visible behind the wheel spokes.

Exterior-wise, the car is running a Blow Design Mode Parfume series 3-piece aero kit. The subtle trunk spoiler is from Aimgain and the LED tail lights are Wise Square pieces. Curious folks might notice the “78″ on the license plate. Custom plate numbers in Japan are quite common, but since there are no alphabetical characters allowed, they have to make do with numerals. Common choices are the chassis code or engine displacement of the car, but in this case the “78″ refers to this….

The factory 2JZ has been outfitted with a single T78 turbine and the output for this set up is about 650 horsepower. Besides the turbine kit, the hot rod Aristo is also running the following-

Trust intercooler

HKS 264 intake and exhaust cams

Ported head

HKS Twin Power Ignition

Trust E-Manage Ultimate

650CC Injectors

Underneath are full coilovers from Quantum, along with various TRD and Ikeya Formula suspension arm and bushing modifications. Brakes are sourced from a JZA80 Supra and the wheels are Work Meister S1 18X9J +21 front, and 18×10 +29 in the rear.

The interior remains stock for the most part, with the exceptions of the driver’s seat and the added meters to keep the 650hp in check. As you can see, the car is still using an automatic transmission (the Aristo was never offered with a manual from the factory). I wouldn’t complain one bit about the slushbox.

The car is also sporting a whole catalog’s worth of audio upgrades, but since I know next to nothing about car audio, I will just say it appears quite impressive.

In this shot you can see the Trust intercooler, FRP hood, and the add-on front canards. The Lexus front grill is a nice touch as well.

The price for all of this? About $11,000 USD.

That’s a couple grand less than a new Toyota Yaris. It even has more than a year of valid “shaken” inspection left.

Check out the detailed YJA listing right here .

Daily Podcast: Original Content

TTAC is a content machine. Our [barely paid] team of writers is as prolific as it is talented. Our [unpaid] commentators are the autoblogosphere’s Best and Brightest, and they’re not shy about coming forward. And whatever you think about my literary skills, my OCD makes me one keyboard tapping fool. Of one thing I am especially proud: although TTAC was late to the blogging game and don’t have a tenth of the resources of the big sites, we kick ass. We blog the big ones, and blog them according to our branding remit. It occasionally annoys me that my competition doesn’t. Just the other day, Justin took a shot at Autoblog for being a “press release funnel.” I thought it was a bit OTT. And then I read AB’s blog about Subaru’s new ad campaign, which (not-so-coincidentally) we covered here. AB republished the entire Subaru press release. No biggie, I thought. Fills the space. And then I rethinked. Why would AB hand deliver its audience to Subaru like that, without any filtration? Its antithetical to my idea of what blogging is all about: added perspective. Exercising editorial judgment. Less poetically, or perhaps more, it’s about NOT kissing ass. I remain committed to this vision. So, how are we doing?

Chrysler Financial Loses Personal Data; Tells Customer Six Weeks Later

First, we’re talking Chrysler Financial Canada. Second, the story in The Windsor Star omits a crucial piece of data (ironically enough): how many Chrysler customers were affected by the missing tape containing customer names, addresses and social insurance numbers. We know there’s one, for sure, and he’s more than a bit miffed at the delay between the Chrysler’s data loss and the heads-up. “Chris Jovanovic, who leases a car from Chrysler, said the company was notified by United Parcel Service about the lost tape on Mar. 12 but a letter from Chrysler Financial dated Mar. 27 didn’t arrive in his mailbox until Monday.” Said letter assured Jovanovic “The data tape cannot be easily accessed and requires specialized software and equipment to read.” So that’s alright then. Not according to Jovanovich. “Someone who knows what they’re doing could probably access the information. Nothing’s that secure these days and it annoys me to think that if the tape never shows up, will we be looking over our shoulders for years waiting for the information to be used.” While Jovanovich is seeing red (and a lawyer), Chrysler’s no longer using brown. A spokeswoman said “after the tape went missing, internal processes were changed and the information is now sent by secure electronic transmissions. UPS is no longer used.” So, bad publicity all ’round, eh?

Suzuki, Toyota Up Chinese Production

Suzuki and Toyota are radically increasing production in China, in an attempt to compensate for faltgering sales in more established markets. Thomson Financial News (via Forbes) reports that Suzuki plans to double production “as early as next year” at its Chonqing-based ChangAn factory. The plant currently churns out 100k Chinese-market Altos. But a recent $144m investment in a new 1.5-liter engine for the ubiquitous (in China) hatchback, and a forthcoming additional $100m + investment in assembly lines, will see production rise to 200k annual units. Toyota is likewise betting long on China; a new factory is under works now in Jilin. Set to open production “some time next decade,” the factory will lift ToMoCo’s China production to over 1m per year. This will make China the number two manufacturing location for Toyota after the United States, where it builds some 1.5m vehicles annually. This will knock Hyundai out its position of top car manufacturer in China, after the Koreans recently spent nearly $800m to increase output to 600k per year.

Oil Headed for $225 A Barrel?

As billions pour into projects aimed at making the Canadian prairies the world’s largest exporter of crude oil, supposedly insulating Canada from an American economic downturn, two major Canadian news sources foreshadow a gloomy future for The Great White North. Canwest News (via Canada.com) quotes a study conducted by CIBC World Markets (the investment arm of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) that suggests oil prices could surge to $225 per barrel by 2012. That would push Canadian gasoline prices to about $2.25/L (or about $8 gallon at current exchange rates). According to Jeff Rubin, World Market’s chief economist, oil supplies are static; demand isn’t. “[For] every extra driver that gets a car and goes on the road in those (developing) countries in the next five to six years, somebody’s having to get off the road in the OECD countries.” Meanwhile, Montréal’s La Presse ran the results of a study conducted by energy analyst and longtime doom-and-gloomer Patrick Déry. He predicted Peak Oil’s (long-awaited?) arrival in 2018; Québec and other net importers of energy will run out of oil supply by 2030.

NYT’s Cohen: Forget Ethanol. Rising Food Prices Caused by Poor Eating Twice a Day

I know what you’re thinking: he grabbed the New York Times’ columnist’s most ridiculous assertion and repeated it out of context. If so, you need to read “Bring on the Right Biofuels,” ’cause this Roger Cohen guy is the MR. Context Manipulation. After listing the charges against bio-fuels, Cohen says “hogwash and bilge”– and then admits he was somewhat wrong about ethanol’s critics being somewhat wrong. “I’ll grant that the fashion for bio-fuels led to excess, and that some farm-to-fuel-plant conversion, particularly in subsidized U.S. and European markets, makes no economic or environmental sense. But bio-fuels remain very much part of the solution. It just depends which bio-fuels.” So, on to [theoretical] production of ethanol from switchgrass, wood chips and garbage, right? Wrong. Cohen is too busy pinning the blame for rising food prices on oil prices and rising standards of living in third world developing nations. “They’re eating twice a day, instead of once, and propelling rapid urbanization. Their demand for food staples and once unthinkable luxuries like meat is pushing up prices.” Perhaps. Anyway, what’s to be done about ethanol? Remove the tariff against Brazilian ethanol! And? And that’s it.

VW footballing analogy

I have heard Rob Golding make caustic remarks about the big German company AGMs before and I don’t think Volkswagen is by any means unique in its quaint procedures, though Ferdinand Piech is perhaps a master in manipulating them for his own ends.

Sounds like Rob’s patience threshold was finally breached yesterday and he could not help but indulge in a little venting. Poor lad had a lot on with financial results yesterday and didn’t much care for the bit players being given too much time by VW to meander aimlessly while the big questions were barely addressed, the untouchable Piech apparently revelling in it all.

Must say, I enjoyed Rob’s footballing analogy at the start of his piece. Clearly things haven’t been going smoothly down at ‘The Valley’ (home to his beloved Charlton Athletic) lately - off or on the pitch. Just what is the world coming to when getting a beer at a major (I’m being kind) sports event is that difficult? Note to self: don’t wind him up even further about the Addicks being condemned to another season out of the top flight - he might explode.

Pot Efficiency Discussed

Via
Popular Mechanics
Questions for Lillian C. Borrone on Boosting Efficiency in America’s Ports

Keeping the nation’s more than 180 ports healthy means more than just dredging channels and patching wharfs. The ports, which are critical for the movement of food, fuel and manufactured goods, have to link efficiently to America’s road and rail infrastructure. We spoke with Lillian C. Borrone, chairman of the Eno Transportation Foundation, a think tank in Washington, D.C., and member of the National Academy of Engineering, about future challenges, the agile port concept and security issues. —Emily Masamitsu

What is the condition of the ports in the United States?

The ports have done an excellent job of handling both cargo and passengers. We not only rely on ports to handle 90 percent of the goods that move internationally through our commercial facilities, but we also have a very large leisure cruise population. But like many other aspects of the nation’s infrastructure, the next 15 to 20 years are going to be challenging to the maritime community.

    $5,000 Challenge Results

I’m incredibly gratified by the response to the $5,000 Challenge–not only did people find a ton of interesting cars, but I found I’m not the only classifieds junkie out there. Anyway, enough text–let’s get to the cars!

My picks: My original goal was to have everybody submit one car, but that’s really hard to do. Instead, like everybody else, I found a couple. There were quite a few perfectly fair daily drivers available, but what’s the fun in that?

My favorite was a faded blue 1976 Chevy Caprice Classic on Craigslist for $2,500 –unfortunately, the listing has disappeared, and I didn’t think to grab the photo first. But it looked straight, perfect, and clean–if a little too pricey for what it is. I love ‘76 Impalas/Caprices; the only reason I haven’t Car Lusted them is because I feel I need to do them proper justice.

Along the same line, there was this gorgeous 72 Imapala, which was within the price range when I was looking earlier in the week. Unfortunately, it wound up going for $15K. Ouch!

Likewise, another old favorite–an Edwardian Gray 1986 Saab 900 SPG, more on it at some future date–was slightly too expensive at $6,000. You can see the listing roughly halfway down the page here. Photos here.

So, my choice is this 1978 Chevy Monza. I’ve fawned over the Monza before in this space, but they’re extremely difficult to find. This one looks to be in decent shape, I like the electric blue color, and hey–it  still has the rear window louvers! At only $3,200, that gives me nearly $2K as a repair budget.

    Your finds:

    Cookie the Dog’s Owner:

In the Cleveland Plain Dealer classifieds:

JAGUAR 1985 XJS Cpe MINT V12-roof, red w/ blk leather, no winters 43k new Pirellis $4950 perfect
–might be a lot of fun between major mechanical failures–

    In the Akron Beacon Journal:

‘92 ACURA Vigor [(badge-engineered 4-dr Accord)], only 127K, service records, auto. Must sell. $2950.
–With the $2,050 remaining in the budget, do some performance and handling upgrades and make it into a BMW-killer–

Finally, from the Avanti Owners International website, from a couple of years ago:

1963 Avanti R2 for sale Project car The car is complete with no accident damage. comes with new hog troughs [(steel “torsion boxes” that mated the fiberglass body to the chassis)] to install. Has power windows and 4 speed. Gold outside fawn interior. The car runs. It just needs a complete going over. The only items missing are: the original steering wheel, steel wheels, and the battery tray. The wheel covers are with the car. Price $5000
–The “R2″ had a Paxton supercharger, and was the world’s fastest production car in the 1963 model year. If the description is accurate, it was restorable to show car condition. I want one.–

    Rob the SVX Guy:

I found two Mitsubishi Galant VR4s for sale in my area, for around $2500 each, and I found a 1991 Dodge Spirit R/T for $2000. I also spotted a 1997 Dodge Neon ACR in Nitro Yellow Green for $800.

Man. What fun. If I had a garage I’d have so many sweet little cars.

    David Drucker:

The first is an ebay 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SL, with a buy-it-now of $4995: http://tinyurl.com/3pzoqw. The description (copied-and-pasted here) doesn’t mention whether the cam chain had been replaced with the more reliable double-race kit used in later examples, but with 170K on the clock I’d guess that it had. Beyond that, there’s nothing tricky or complex in the 107 two-seaters. I’ve had a couple, both from the 70s, and they’re wonderful do-everything vehicles. My wife and I used to go camping — dirt roads and all — in ours.

eBay Description: This is a Classic 1981 Mercedes Benz SL380 Two Top Roadster. This SL380 has the small V8 engine and automatic transmission and has just over 170,000 miles on it. It is in very good condition and will only appreciate in value, as these older SL’s are getting harder to find. Paint appears to be original , and looks good from a few feet, but some areas are sun damaged. Hardtop is in very good condition. Soft top is also in good condition. Top has no rips or tears, but plastic windows are sun damaged and cracked. This car has later model Mercedes 16″ wheels and tires in good condition. Interior is in good condition for a 27 year old vehicle. Seats may have been recovered. Driver’s seat is showing some wear. Carpets and door panels are in good condition. Engine runs great and has plenty of power. Transmission shifts smoothly. Car handles very well at high speeds. It is a bit cold blooded when first started, but runs nice once it is warmed up. Power windows and radio work like they should. This is a great chance to own a classic Mercedes Roadster at a great price.

    ———-

And here’s a 1982 240D four-speed for $3650 (because I know how to double-clutch). It has barely enough power to pull the cap off a bottle of Bud, but I still love it. The description comes from the seller’s (Vintage Sales, Cincinatti) web site: http://tinyurl.com/4nbh27

Delivered new in California and spent most of its life out West, 170K, 4-speed stick shift, sunroof, windups, power locks; absolutely straight body with a recent repaint (Carfax is clean), decent interior (the Tex seats have a few minor & repairable cracks and the dash has a few also, an Accuform dash cover will snap right in). Mechanics are good, motor is very peppy (for a 240D!), tranny has some wear in the 2nd gear synchros (rakes on the 3- 2 downshift, but not on the 1-2 upshift), cold AC, 4 Michelins are about 1/2 tread. Good car - and the ultimate in bulletproof transportation! $4650 includes repairing the 2nd gear synchros in the transmission; $3650 if you want to skip that (really doesn’t have to be done, discuss with us “why not’)….

    hunter in CLT:

Not having any money in the bank, and badly wanting another roadster (I had to sell my ‘99 two years ago), you can imagine how my heart broke upon seeing this last week:

    http://charlotte.craigslist.org/car/643542458.html

$2700 for an absolutely mint 1.6L Miata with low double digits on the clock? Hell yes, even if it *is* red.

And with a $5k total budget, the things one could do…

    James:

I have the same disease, constantly perusing car ads and “helping” friends find cars.
Here is my submission for the contest:
    http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/650706343.html

where else can you find purple on purple leather for under $5K?!?

    OldCarGuy:

I’d be really tempted to look at this:
    1979 RX-7, original owner, 99K miles, $2,499.
    http://cars.ajccars.com/Autos?property=AJC_V1&tp=A JC_V2&classification=autos,transportation&temp_typ e=detail&tl=2&ad_id=167949314

For towing all those project cars home, you could always use one of these:
    1981 Chevy Suburban, 454, A/C, towing package, $2,250.
    http://cars.ajccars.com/Autos?property=AJC_V1&tp=A JC_V2&classification=autos,transportation&temp_typ e=detail&tl=2&ad_id=168022280

    Mochi Mochi:

67? Mercedes 250s - this is looking pretty sweet to me - but I think this is a 70’s car.

    http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/car/648380998 .html

    I’d drive it.

No - it is Mercedes from the 60s - the styling switch over happened in 67 - apparently. Here are a couple of nice ones… a 68 and a sweet little 69 for $2K

    http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/car/642872729 .html

    Brian:

Nothing too exciting in the local paper, but on Anchorage craigslist there’s this thing:
    1987 Porsche 924S - $4200 (Anchorage)
    http://anchorage.craigslist.org/car/641177342.html
    1987 Porsche 924S, basically it’s a 944 in 924 clothing. I’m not terribly excited by it, but I was completely Porsche-less I’d consider it. There are a couple of 944s but they’re each a hair over $5k.
This is the real cool one tho:
    1974 Datsun 260Z - $750 (South Anchorage)
    http://anchorage.craigslist.org/car/652632809.html
“Complete . Running when parked 12 years ago . Good title “
Good title! Well it’s nice to know there’s SOMETHING on it that still could be considered “good.” I’d totally buy this one if I didn’t have 2 other freekin’ sports cars already. It’s a disease!!

    Amy:

I’d have to investigate a ‘68 VW Karmann Ghia with 73K miles for $4,500. Most likely a money pit, but I’m used to that; my daily driver of 12 years is a ‘72 BMW ‘02.
