Beijing Auto Show Reflects New World Order

“Automakers wage war for market share,” reads the headline over at China Daily. The current battlefront of that war can be viewed at the 2008 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, which runs through April 28th. With 890 vehicles on display in the 1.9m square foot arena, the nine-day event is expected to attract more than 600k visitors. The spoils of war can be lucrative, too, with Chinese vehicle sales up 21.4 percent year-over-year, which translates to 2.58m cars sold in the first quarter. Total sales are predicted to surpass the 8.79m units sold in ‘07 and reach 10m vehicles in 2008. While the suspected recession in the U.S. has tempered car sales here, the prospects in China offer a respite: Ford’s Chinese sales have “rocketed” by 47 percent in the first quarter. GM’s Rick Wagoner figures China will account for more than 40 percent of global auto sales growth in the coming decade. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz launched its C-Class sedans in China last month and Ulrich Walker, the chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia Ltd., is amazed at China’s transformation. In a single generation, a population simply striving to own a “Flying Pigeon” bicycle now strives to own a “big Benz.” “In the history of the world, no country has changed as much as China in the past 30 years,” says MB’s Walker.

GM Cuts Truck Production, Big Style

The Detroit News reports that GM will be cutting one shift from its Flint, Pontiac, Oshawa, Ontario, and Janesville, WI factories by July 14. The slashing eliminates some 3,500 jobs from GM’s North American workforce. The move eliminates produciton of some 50k body-on-frame vehicles– which have already fallen 100k due to the ongoing American Axle strike. Analyst Joe Phillippi of AutoTrends Consulting says this is gonna leave a mark. “These are the most profitable things they make, and losing those profits is going to hurt for the next three quarters.” Still, there’s no point in building ‘em if nobody wants to buy them; GM has seen a 17 percent decline in pickup sales and a 29 percent drop in large SUVs in the first quarter of this year. Sure, cutting makes the powerless feel like they’re in control, but until GM goes “down the road, not across the street,” expect the misery and moodiness to continue.

Food or Fuel? Choose One

The President of the World Bank [via NPR] says demand for ethanol and other biofuels is a “significant contributor” to soaring food prices around the world. Robert Zoellick says droughts, financial speculators and increased demand for food have created “a perfect storm” of climbing food prices. In the U.S., the price of corn has more than doubled due, in part, to the demand for alt fuels such as ethanol. The World Bank figures food prices will stay high, or go higher, over the next couple of years. “Biofuels is no doubt a significant contributor,” says Zoellick. “It is clearly the case that programs in Europe and the U.S. that have increased biofuel production have contributed to the added demand for food.” As we reported last week, some 20 percent of last year’s U.S. corn crop went to ethanol production; it’s likely to reach 30 percent next year. Boondoggles can be lethal.

Goodwood press day

Goodwood press day

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 11:50AM on Thursday 10 April, 2008 0 Comments

Yesterday morning I headed down to Goodwood house to watch creative director Charlie Turner run his long-term test car, a Ford Mustang GT500, up the now legendary Goodwood hill.

The hill run is a key part of the yearly Goodwood Festival of Speed, and so yes, yesterday was what is commonly known as ‘a PR stunt’. As is the way with these things, we were a bit sceptical of whether it would actually be any good, as ‘PR stunts’ can invariably be a bit, well, rubbish.

The scepticism didn’t last long. We were left slack-jawed when we saw the array of cars - this was no ordinary publicity stunt. This was petrol-head nirvana.

This year’s Festival theme is ‘Hawthorn to Hamilton - Britain’s Love Affair with World Motor Sport’ and as such there were a genre spanning array of cars on display.

Bentley’s Le Mans winning Speed 8, an awesome Ferrari 250 TR58 - that used to be run by Phil Hill and Mike Hawthorn and was about to be driven by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss - a first generation Nissan KPGC10 GT-R, a very loud 1960s Lola-Ford T92 IndyCar that Jackie Stewart used to drive, a 1990 Silkcut Jag XJR 12 and a new Nissan GT-R were all among those present. And we’re promised even more at this year’s event proper.

The only slight disappointment was that the McLaren MP4/22 on display was just a show-car version of Lewis Hamilton’s 2007 runner, and the man himself - who I’m sure has more important things on his mind after last weekend’s disappointing Bahrain Grand Prix - wasn’t around either.

Yet his dad Anthony Hamilton was, and after Turner’s run up the hill, Hamilton Snr poked his head in through the ‘Stang’s window to ask for a lift back down.

Of all the cars he could have ridden in, he picked Charlie’s, which is testament to just how much attention the GT500 gets. Imagine what it’s like being driven through town…

So if this press day was anything to go by, the event itself on July 11-13 should be a bally good show, as Lord March might say.

(And if you’re interested, here’s some really low-grade video from the start line. It’ll give you an idea of what was going on though, and it doesn’t sound too bad either.)

Kerkorian likes FMC

If there was ever a sign that Ford has really turned a corner with its latest financial results maybe it is the renewed buying interest of Kirk Kerkorian. This is the guy who took a hosing with his DCX shares (and lost a court case for compensation) and more recently failed to engineer control of GM via manoueverings involving Carlos Ghosn. Now he’s taking an interest in Ford. I wonder what the Ford dynasty makes of that, but, as they own most of the voting stock, they probably aren’t too concerned about any future Tracinda manoueverings. It looks more like a vote of confidence in Ford and it’s turnaround course.

Cuba: Wage Limits Removed

Cuba is revamping the state wage system to create more incentive by allowing workers to earn as much as they can, local media said, the latest sign that President Raúl Castro wants to improve the country’s economic performance.

“For the first time it is clearly and precisely stated that a salary does not have a limit, that the roof of a salary depends on productivity,” said a television economic commentator, Ariel Terrero.

    Car Lust–Ariel Atom

If there is a lunatic fringe among cars, the Atom is at the lunatic fringe of that fringe. It is one of the very few cars that can make the Caterham Super Seven look like a safe, sedate, practical family car. The Atom is street-legal in most states as a kit car and can be driven (rather quickly) on public roads, but while most sports cars make weak pretenses at being suitable for everyday transportation, the Atom eschews with that pretense and goes right for the jugular.

We talk a lot here about the beauty and wonder of light weight, and how a lack of mass can help a performance car excel in every possible dynamic way–acceleration, braking, cornering, and fuel economy. Well, the Atom takes that concept to its ultimate extreme, with sublime results.

Little more than a motorcycle on four wheels, the Atom combines a supercharged GM Ecotec four-cylinder engine with a tiny, impossibly light chassis for true supercar performance. Only 1,000 pounds and a 300 horsepower gives the Atom a near-superbike power-to-weight ratio. 0-60 takes less than 3 seconds. That’s faster or as fast as any supercar available. Porsche 959? Slower. Ferrari F40 or F50? Slower. Corvette Z06? Slower. Any Lamborghini? Slower. Any Ferrari with the possible exception of the Enzo? Slower. And that’s just in a straight line.

The Ariel really thrives when the road–or, let’s be real, the track–decides to get funky. With a ridiculously low center of gravity, a wide track, and virtually no mass, the Ariel responds as quickly as your impulses can fire. Around Top Gear’s test track, the relatively inexpensive Ariel thumped virtually every bloated, heavy supercar ever made–all for a fraction of the price and none of the ego.

You can even carry a passenger–great for those first dates if your date is the type of person who prefers roller coasters to fine French dining. It also wouldn’t be a great idea to take a quick drive in the Atom after fine French dining.

One of the reasons I find the Atom so compelling is that I’ve daydreamed about a car like this for this last 15 years. Once I came into contact with my Acura Integra’s brilliant 1.8-liter VTEC engine, I set myself to thinking about how to get that sweet engine into a minimalist chassis with no extra frippery adding weight. Of course, I did absolutely nothing to make that vision a reality, but I’m happy to see somebody competent was thinking along the same lines. In fact, the European version even uses a Honda VTEC engine.

Light, efficient, and relatively cheap, the Ariel is the Carl Lewis to the swaggering, musclebound Mike Tysons of the mega-performance world. Just don’t try to pick up the kids or get groceries in it.

I don’t typically embed Top Gear videos–I don’t want to piggyback off their absolutely fantastic content–but I had to include this one. It’s a great tribute to the Atom, but the real highlight is watching Jeremy Clarkson’s face morph as if he’s in a bad 1970s sci-fi movie.

    Servicing A Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

So you are thinking about buying a hybrid.  But is a owning hybrid right for you?

With gas prices once again on the rise, there is a good chance that the thought of owning a hybrid vehicle will cross your mind.   There are significantly more choices now then there were just a couple of years ago and the number of hybrids on the road is on the rise.

We will break down the first real service on this 2007 Toyota Highlander.

     highlander

The current trend is to offer the same vehicle in two different versions one being an all gasoline internal combustion engine and the other a “hybrid” of a internal combustion engine and electric vehicle combination. When looking under the hood of this 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid one of the first things you will see is the heart and soul of the hybrid system.   While it is important to observe precautions when servicing the vehicle, the maintenance may be easier then you think.

This vehicle has a separate inverter cooling system.  The level and condition must be inspected in addition to the engines cooling system.

Most of the maintenance of this Toyota Highlander Hybrid is pretty straight forward, such as the removal and installation of the air filter.

This vehicle utilizes a cabin filter which is located in the dashboard area behind the glove box and we can see that at 15,000 miles it is ready to be replaced.  The purpose of the cabin filter is to help clean up the air you breathe while in the vehicle.  It is important if your vehicle does have a cabin filter that the filter is inspected at least once a year and replaced as necessary as a restricted or dirty cabin filer can reduce the amount of air coming into the cabin.

This is a cabin filer that is just one year old.

Changing the engine oil on this Hybrid is just like changing the oil on any other vehicle and as is rotating the tires.

One thing of note here is that the main vehicle battery is very small and this should be observed if leaving one of the vehicle accessories on such as the radio or a light for an extended period of time.

Here is one major difference, the rear drive system of this vehicle is all electric and where there used to be a mechanical differential assembly that only required the fluid to be changed, there Is now instead an electrical drive device that does not have the same maintenance requirements as its predecessor.

Over all this Highlander hybrid 15,000 mile service is no more challenging than a 15,000 mile service on an all gasoline version of the same vehicle.  While there are vast differences, the minor maintenance intervals are still pretty straight forward.  And the overall cost of the early maintenance requirements is relatively the same.   Stay tuned for the 30k service and we will continue to try and keep you informed.

A special thanks to Scott Chytil of Scott Chytil photography for these exceptional pictures.  http://www.chytilphoto.com/

The Talking Beetle Helps Volkswagen Take a Deep Dive Into Polling

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — As part of its “What the People Want” ad campaign, Volkswagen of America on Monday launched a huge polling effort that spans such venues as the Internet and Times Square. To kick things off, the German automaker took the pulse of U.S. buyers and found they are against portion control in restaurants and want to keep pets out of the workplace. The majority also prefer boxers over briefs.

Consumers can get in on the polling action by visiting the What the People Want Web site. Max, the talking Beetle and new brand spokesman, will guide them through different polling topics. Participants can buy T-shirts displaying the polls of their choice, “thus giving people instant street fame,” the automaker said.

VW also unveiled an interactive display in Times Square, where consumers can take part in live polling through the ABC SuperSign, located at 43rd and Broadway. Passersby can use their cell phones to text message “yea” or “nay” in response to polls that appear on the SuperSign.

“Volkswagen has a rich heritage as part of American popular culture and a deep personal connection with its customers,” said Tim Ellis, Volkswagen of America vice president of marketing. “[The campaign] is a way of keeping in touch with what matters to people today.”

What this means to you: VW gives you a big platform for your opinions and hopes that it will help to build brand loyalty. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
