Vauxhall Insignia: interior photos

Vauxhall has released the first official photos of its Insignia’s interior.

“We wanted to create interior environments for all our future vehicles that are warm, inviting and sporty”, says interior design director John Puskar. The cabin of the Insignia, successor to the Vectra, has a curved dashboard, chrome accents and amber night-lighting, with a white-lit instrument cluster - though at the touch of a ‘Sport’ button, the dials turn red.

The Insignia should be practical, too. Vauxhall promises a flexible centre console with storage facilities, space has been freed-up by the fitment of an electronic parking brake, and there are new multi-function controls on some models.

Garth Tander wins V8 championship

Garth Tander won the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship in a thrilling finish.

GARTH Tander did what his teammate Rick Kelly could not do — win the V8 Supercar Championship in style and dignity after prevailing in a cliffhanger finish.

After a 14-round season of twists and turns, Tander pipped Triple Eight Ford star Jamie Whincup by two points to win his maiden championship in a drama that did not have its conclusion until the last corner of the final lap in the final heat.

Tander restored credibility to the sport that was left reeling when his Toll/HSV teammate Kelly won the series 12 months ago after ushering his only threat Craig Lowndes off the track in a move that caused outrage.

Todd Kelly (Holden Racing Team) inadvertently had a hand in Tander’s success by winning the final 27-lap heat by 0.83sec from Whincup.

Had Whincup left himself with the tyre life to close up behind Kelly and blast past him he would have won the series by two points, but Kelly held his nerve and did enough early in the race to set himself up for victory.

Lowndes played his part by pushing his way past Tander to finish third and help Whincup’s cause after what appeared to be a daring but legal move coming out of the tricky Siberia left-hand corner.

At the time Tander was vocal, protesting Lowndes’s move over the radio back to team manager Rob Crawford in the pits.

“I thought I had a flat tyre I was going that far sideways,” Tander replied.

“Last time I looked he (Lowndes) was a long way back and I certainly didn’t leave the door open.”

That was about the only point of contention in an otherwise clean race.

The driving standards were beyond reproach with many observers labelling it the best championship finish, even outdoing the cracking, fender-rubbing Dick Johnson and Peter Brock title fight at Lakeside in 1981.

Tander was roundly received as a deserving champion, winning 15 races out of 37 run for the year along with four round wins to match Whincup’s round tally.

Whincup may have lost the championship but he won the respect of observers from both sides of the fence (Ford and Holden) by accepting defeat so graciously.

The 24-year-old was the consummate competitor, giving away precious little, fighting to the bitter end but never tempted to step over the line and wear the black hat.

Triple Eight team owner Roland Dane summed up the result perfectly.

“Garth and Jamie both excelled during the year,” Brisbane-based Dane said.

“Garth is the proper winner — not like last year,” referring to the Kelly/Lowndes fiasco.

Whincup can hold his head high — his behaviour in the heat of battle through the good and bad times in 2007 has been exemplary.

“It was a fair fight in the end with nothing unsportsmanlike and the better driver won the title,” Whincup said.

“I have mixed emotions at the moment.

“The moment on the podium is going to stay with me for a while as it’s not a good feeling. Second is a dull feeling.”

Holden won the manufacturers’ title in a race that also went down to the wire with the Toll/HSV Dealer outfit winning the teams’ gong.

CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Garth Tander (Holden) 625
2. Jamie Whincup (Ford) 623
3. Craig Lowndes (Ford) 592
4. Rick Kelly (Holden) 552
5. Mark Winterbottom (Ford) 420

Reed to boost Supercross

He flies through the air with the greatest of ease…

…and this year is expected to leap over Formula One driver Mark Webber to become Australia’s richest motor sportsman.

Chad Reed, 26, of Kurri Kurri, near Newcastle, last month won the world and American Supercross championships and has just launched an updated Australian supercross series in which he will star.

His Australian manager Matt Cousins says Reed’s earnings this year should eclipse his wealth in 2004, which landed him in fourth in BRW’s sporting rich list and surpass Webber.

“The BRW list comes out in December and we expect him to be at least third or fourth,” Cousins says.

Reed will not comment on his wealth but is between contracts with bike companies “which is killing me for merchandise sales at the moment.”

However he says that the “Super X” series, which he is bankrolling with partner Mike Porra, had secured lucrative worldwide live TV deals.

It includes live coverage on Foxsport and delayed broadcasts on Channel Ten and Fuel TV.

“This is the first time a whole supercross series has been telecast absolutely live anywhere in the world,” Reed said.

Super X prizemoney will exceed $200,000, three times the amount up for grabs in previous national supercross competitions, and the seven-round series will be held on full-size US-type man-made tracks.

The seven-round series starts in Perth on October 4, moves to Adelaide October 18, Geelong October 25, Sydney November 8, Wollongong November 15, Townsville November 22 and the grand final in Brisbane at QEII on November 29.

A one-off event will also be staged in New Zealand on December 15.

Porra, who is responsible for the successful Uncle Toby’s Ironman Series and also brought the sell-out Crusty Demons freestyle motocross shows to Australia, said New Zealand would be included in the series next year.

He said the series would increase to 10 rounds between 2010 and 2017 with rounds in Beijing, Shanghai and Dubai with prizemoney swelling to $350,000.

Cousins could not be precise about Reed’s investment in the Australian series, but he is tipped to pour in $5 million with Porra in the first year.

“It is hard to put a figure on it (how much he will spend) but as well as the amount of money he’s spending it’s the missed opportunities in the US that will cost him between $17-20 million over the next three years.”

Reed rode the final four rounds of the US championship _ where he won nine of the 17 rounds _ nursing a broken shoulder from a crash during practise.

He won nine of the 17 rounds, finished on the podium 13 times and led 153 laps over the season, three times more than any other rider.

“It has been a dream of mine for a very long time to turn supercross into a mainstream sport in Australia,” he said.

The Super X series will include tracks made designed by Mark Barnett who designs tracks for the US competition.

Porra said the international riders in the series, who would be named in the next few weeks, would not have been released to compete here if the tracks were not up to US safety standards.

Super X will also include four new race formats sanctioned by Motorcycling Australia. They include a man-on-man one-lap sprint and a “survival” race with the slowest being eliminated.

Chrysler Set to Push More Suppliers Over the Edge

Tata Consultantcy Services may regret their contract to take over Chrysler’s information technology (IT) services. Automotive News [sub] reports that Chrysler “asked its non-production suppliers for a 5 percent across the board cost reduction” effective June 1 and effective for one year. “Non-production suppliers” are those providing IT, administrative, custodial and other support services not directly involved with producing automobiles. A statement from Chrysler explained their “recent decision to enact a 5 percent cost reduction on non-production materials and services is part of Chrysler’s ongoing efforts to reduce its cost footprint in a highly competitive marketplace.” From what we’ve seen, these “ongoing efforts” also include stiffing delaying payments to some suppliers and asking others to take a 25 percent cost cut. Some of these beleaguered suppliers can’t take beatings like this much longer before they follow Plastech into Chapter 11. But maybe that’s what Cerberus wants, because it would give them an excuse to take Chrysler in the same direction.

Opel Insignia - first interior shots

GM today unveiled the first shots of Insignia’s interior, to be more precise we are talking about the UK version of the Insignia.

The dashboard wraps around from the instrument panel to the door in a very sophisticated way, embracing the occupants. This wing theme will be echoed across all Opels. Red ambient lighting, which also will be featured in future Opel models, vibrate a warm, luxurious aura. A lot of emphasis too has been put into the seating, which set the highest standards in ergonomics, comfort and safety.

The 2009 Insignia will make its world debut in July at the London Motor Show and will go on sale in November.

AutoblogGreen for 06.04.08

Ahh, the joys of running an auto company when gas is at $4 a gallon. GM may have had enough of the HUMMER brand, for example, but it loves the Volt. Porsche says whatever to CAFE. And VW thinks the Golf should have even smaller engines.

May Sales: Civic in May outsells Hummer for the year

DETROIT - Here’s something you can count on: Honda sold more Civics in May than General Motors will sell Hummers all year in the U.S. Civic sales totaled 53,299 last month, just short of Hummer’s calendar 2007 sales of 55,986. With Hummer sales down 60.2 percent for May ‘08 versus May ‘07, you can see why GM wants to unload the civilian version of the military brand and concentrate more on cars like the Honda.

GM shifts model lineup from trucks to cars

By decade’s end, the No. 1 U.S. automaker will have shuttered four truck plants, cut thousands more jobs and re-created its lineup to include more fuel-efficient cars and crossovers and less of the hulking SUVs and pickups that have long driven profits in Detroit.

Renault Scenic (2009): the spy photos

Following hot on the heels of the Renault Megane hatchback at the 2008 Paris motor show will be this MPV version – the new 2009 Scenic. Our spies caught this French-registered prototype testing under a very unflattering plastic bag disguise, thwarting our attempts to see the latest design from Patrick le Quément.

The new midi-MPV is due in showrooms in 2009, a few months after the Megane hatch. French magazines have already shown spy photos of the hatchback, scooped in a customer clinic, and it points to the new look being prepared for the Scenic.

So what’s under that bin-bag disguise?

It’ll be an evolution of today’s look, pepped up with a new nose, fresh surface treatments and less of the ‘wiggling bum’ look pioneered on the current Megane. The 2008 Megane coupe concept from the Geneva show gives a pretty good idea of what to expect.

There will again be two versions of Renault’s new mid-sized people carrier: a five-seater Scenic and an extended-wheelbase Grand Scenic with seven pews. Expect a new generation of sliding seat origami to offer intelligent stowage solutions for limbs and luggage.
