Tech Watch: Opel Eye Warns Drivers About Speed Limits

RUSSELSHEIM, Germany — The Opel Eye, an in-vehicle camera that can read speed limit and no-passing signs, was introduced on Wednesday. Opel said the system will be available in early 2009 on the Opel Insignia, with other models to follow shortly.

The high-tech system, which was developed by GM/Opel and auto supplier Hella, bundles two functions. The Traffic Sign Recognition function reads the speed limit and no-passing signs and displays them on the instrument panel. A lane departure warning system alerts drivers when they veer out of the lane. “These two systems improve driving safety, reduce stress and can even prevent costly speeding tickets,” Opel said in a statement.

Opel says the system uses a camera that is not much bigger than a mobile phone and takes 30 pictures per second. It is located between the windshield and the rearview mirror. Two signal processors and computer software filter and read the photos. “The system always displays the most relevant information for safe driving, filtering out many signs that may overwhelm drivers,” Opel said. “If two signs are recognized in close proximity to one another, then special notice signs, like a ‘no passing’ restriction, would take precedence over a speed limit sign.”

The notices show up on the instrument panel for just a few seconds between the gauges. Opel says the new system is better than a portable navigation system with stored speed limits because it works in “real time.”

“If a speed limit changes, due to road construction for instance, the Opel Eye detects it,” it said.

GM has not yet announced pricing on the Opel Eye or said if it will end up on GM vehicles in the U.S. GM Europe’s Web site includes a short video of how Opel Eye works.

Honda Announces First FCX Clarity Customers and World’s First Fuel Cell Vehicle Dealership Network as Clarity Production Begins in Japan
Breakthrough zero emissions vehicle to be delivered in July

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced five of the first customers for its advanced new FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle and also provided details of the world’s first fuel cell vehicle dealership network in the United States. The announcements were made during a ceremony for the start of FCX Clarity production at the world’s first dedicated fuel cell vehicle manufacturing facility in Japan.

Film producer Ron Yerxa will take delivery of the first FCX Clarity in July. The remaining four early adopters for Honda’s next-generation fuel cell vehicle are author and actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her filmmaker husband Christopher Guest; business owner and car enthusiast Jim Salomon; actress Laura Harris; and Jon Spallino, already the world’s first retail fuel cell vehicle customer, who has been leasing the current generation FCX since 2005. Yerxa, Harris and Spallino attended the event in Japan.

To provide its customers with outstanding sales and service support and as a critical step in advancing fuel cell vehicles in the real world, American Honda announced the establishment of the first network of dealers to facilitate the sales and service of fuel cell vehicles. The three Southern California Honda dealers are Power Honda Costa Mesa (Costa Mesa), Honda of Santa Monica (Santa Monica) and Scott Robinson Honda (Torrance).

“This is an important day in the history of fuel cell vehicle technology and a monumental step closer to the day when fuel cell cars will be part of the mainstream,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “Our customers and dealers share in our vision for a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future, and share in our challenge to embrace a new generation of automotive technology that we think will carry the auto industry and its customers into the future.”

FCX Clarity Customers

The five customers announced today were among the very first people to share with Honda their passion for the environment and interest in the FCX Clarity, dating back to its debut as a concept model at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The initial criteria for fuel cell vehicle ownership, including proximity to hydrogen refueling stations, driving patterns and vehicle needs, all played a part in Honda’s customer selection process.

“Auto companies can’t explore the potential for fuel cell technology as the ultimate solution to our world’s energy and environmental challenges by ourselves. Our customers are true pioneers and leaders in the effort to bring fuel cell technology to the marketplace,” said Mendel.

Ron Yerxa, a film producer and partner at Bona Fide Productions, is a long-time car enthusiast and advocate for the environment. He lives with his wife, Annette Ballester, in Santa Monica, California. Yerxa first learned of the FCX Concept vehicle from a car magazine and contacted American Honda to share his interest and enthusiasm.

Jon Spallino, partner and Chief Financial Officer of an Irvine, California-based engineering and construction firm and the world’s first retail customer of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle, is excited to trade in his first-generation FCX for the all-new FCX Clarity. Having lived with fuel cell technology for three years now, Spallino and his family, residents of Redondo Beach, California, are looking forward to the all-new vehicle’s vastly improved performance, enhanced features, improved fuel efficiency, and advanced four-door, four-passenger sedan design.

Actress and children’s book author Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, filmmaker Christopher Guest, also live with their family in Santa Monica. Curtis and Guest have owned other alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles, and they continue to seek out ways to live and advocate a greener lifestyle.

Jim Salomon, a business owner and car enthusiast, resides in Newport Beach, California with his family and will be American Honda’s first retail customer to regularly refuel at the recently renovated Irvine hydrogen refueling station. Salomon and his family live in a home he designed and built with an emphasis on energy efficiency as well as recycled and sustainable materials.

Actress and green advocate Laura Harris learned about the FCX Clarity from a friend and test drove a prototype car at the Los Angeles auto show in November 2007. Canadian-born Harris lives in Silverlake, California, and will refuel primarily in Burbank. Lessons learned from her usage patterns and experiences can help pave the way for eventual market expansion outside of the Irvine, Torrance, and Santa Monica areas.

Honda previously announced plans to deliver about 200 FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles in the U.S. and Japan to customers in the first three years of production, with leases beginning in July. The lease program marks the world’s first large-scale retail initiative for fuel cell vehicle technology.

First-ever Fuel Cell Vehicle Dealership Network

Reinforcing its commitment to further advance Honda fuel cell technology, American Honda announced that three Southern California dealerships will comprise the world’s first fuel cell automobile dealership network. Power Honda Costa Mesa, Honda of Santa Monica and Scott Robinson Honda are each located in close proximity to hydrogen refueling stations and will be well-positioned to support Honda’s growing base of FCX Clarity customers.

American Honda is working with its dealer partners to implement processes for fuel cell vehicle lease, delivery and service support for the duration of their leases. Establishing a dedicated sales network and service infrastructure provides customers with the best balance of convenience and the highest quality of service. When the FCX Clarity requires periodic maintenance, customers will simply schedule a visit with their local FCX Clarity dealer.
American Honda will perform all required work at its specialized fuel cell service facility, in the greater Los Angeles area. Upon completion of the work, the dealer will return the vehicle to the customer.

About the FCX Clarity

The FCX Clarity is a next-generation, hydrogen powered fuel cell-powered vehicle. Propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity generated in the fuel cell, the vehicle’s only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is three times that of a modern gasoline-powered automobile. Based on the entirely-new Honda V Flow fuel cell platform, and powered by a highly compact, efficient and powerful new Honda V Flow fuel cell stack, the FCX Clarity marks the significant progress Honda continues to make in advancing the real-world performance and appeal of the fuel cell car. Significant advances over Honda’s previous generation FCX include:

  • an advanced new four passenger sedan design
  • a greater than 30 percent increase in driving range up to 280 miles*
  • a 25 percent increase in combined fuel economy to 72 miles/kg-H2*
(74 mpg GGE <miles per gallon gasoline gallon equivalent energy>)
  • a 50 percent improvement in fuel stack power output density by volume
  • a 40 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter new lithium ion battery pack

Honda is responsible for the development of the world’s first fuel cell car (Honda FCX) to be certified for regular commercial use by the U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board; the first deployment of a fuel cell car with a fleet customer; and the first individual retail customer for a fuel cell vehicle.

For SUVs, the Bad News Only Gets Worse

Everyone knows SUVs are in trouble because of high gas prices, but this recent trend also impacts the rate at which they’ll depreciate. This most affects leased vehicles coming back to dealers after the terms expire. Some 800,000 trucks and SUVs are due back at dealers in 2008, and residual values projected when the cars were leased three or four years ago will fall $6,000 short per vehicle, according to CNW Research.

Postponing the luxury car tax was the right move

The Senate’s decision to refer the proposed luxury car tax increase to an inquiry is the right one, despite the Government’s bleating that it will cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue.

It is the right decision because the legislation was drafted without consultation and without consideration of the wider issues confronting the car industry, including global warming and the road toll.

Luxury car makers are fuming that they were not consulted before the contentious decision to raise the luxury tax level from 25 per cent to 33 per cent.

Had they been approached, they could have made a strong case for leaving the tax where it is, if not abolishing it altogether.

For example, luxury cars are among the most efficient on the planet. The BMW 530d is similar in size and performance to a Commodore Omega, yet uses just 7.5 litres per 100km, compared with 10.9L/100km for the Commodore.

Other luxury cars use direct injection petrol engines that are incredibly efficient, while Lexus has three hybrid models, each of which will attract the new higher taxes.

Then there’s the matter of safety. Luxury cars have been innovators in vehicle safety for many years. They pioneered the introduction of stability control, which has been described as the biggest safety breakthrough since the seatbelt.

How many millions of dollars will be saved through the public hospital system if new technology can reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on our roads?

Besides, we’ve asked before why cars are singled out for a luxury tax when nothing else - be it yachts or jewellery - attracts such a thing.

And what lifesaving technology will slip out of reach of buyers as a result of the tax?

The other question the Government doesn’t seem to have asked itself is: what defines a luxury car these days?

Is $57,123 a realistic number or is it one that comes from the dark ages? Consider the fact that a number of mainstream brands, including Holden and Ford, have four-wheel-drives and people movers that will attract the new “luxury tax”. Farmers who run Toyota LandCruisers and Nissan Patrols will also attract the tax.

At the very least, the legislation needs more thorough consideration before it is passed through the Senate. Hopefully, the Government will approach the inquiry with a more open mind than it displayed when it drafted the original legislation.

F1 here until 2015

The Brumby Government has struck a deal for Melbourne to keep the Formula One Grand Prix until 2015.

Under the verbal agreement, expected to be signed off within days, the Government and the international Grand Prix bosses have consented to a five-year extension.

That would see the international race stay at Albert Park until at least 2015.

There had been doubts the race would go on in Melbourne after running at losses of up to $160 million in the past 12 years.

A senior government source last night confirmed the race would remain in Melbourne, saying an announcement was “imminent”.

”We haven’t signed the deal, but we’re going to quite soon,” the source said.

The deal is expected to include a move to later race start times; probably about 5pm; to attract a wider European television audience.

But it will not be a night race.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had told the Sunday Herald Sun he would take Melbourne’s race to “India, Russia or Korea” unless it was staged at night.

He wasn’t available last night to discuss the deal or his reasons for his backflip on Melbourne retaining the race.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said the race would not start after dark.

“We have ruled out a night Grand Prix and that is not negotiable,” he said.

“This is a good event for the state. It’s one we want to keep and we’ll be working hard to ensure that it does remain here in Melbourne in the years ahead.”

The government source said Mr Brumby and Mr Ecclestone had reached a compromise.

“They’ve come to an agreement,” the source said.

Melbourne race organisers this year offered an olive branch to Mr Ecclestone and the FIA by moving the race starting time from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Next year’s race will start at 5pm and future events may start at a similar time or even slightly later.

Melbourne’s retention of the Australian Grand Prix spoils the party for interstate raiders who wanted to lure it to NSW, Queensland and South Australia.

White knight rolls out

This stunning bespoke Phantom is on the block.

THE world’s only metallic white Phantom Pearl Rolls-Royce, one of 11 Rollers delivered to Australia last year, is being auctioned online.

It is from the exclusive bespoke collection, with mother-of-pearl inlays adorning the dash and centre console.

CEO of graysonline, Cameron Poolman, said it was the company’s first world-exclusive sale.

The car, which was part of a liquidation, cost about $1.1 million new and is expected to fetch more than $600,000, he said.

“This is a business asset and so due to downturn in the financial markets the business is in liquidation,” he said. “It is currently registered in Victoria but will be sold unregistered.”

Features include 21-inch chrome-vaned alloy wheels and the Phantom aluminium 6.75L, V12 engine.

The vehicle has travelled fewer than 6000km and log books are included.

“We are expecting mainly local interest, however, overseas parties are welcome to bid,” Poolman said.

The auction closes on Friday.

Question of the Day: What’s the Lowest Class Car You Can Buy?

I was just on the virtual horn with Mr. Berkowitz and we were discussing that for $47,000 the 430 horsepower Corvette is a fantastic bargain. We’re also both young, dumb and childless. So Farago’s pronouncement of the Corvette as a “death Car” has no effect on us. But then Justin dropped this bomb, “my girlfriend’s mom, who is on her third Lexus SC430, told me she thinks the Corvette is the lowest class car a person can buy.” Ouch. Take that, Vetteirati. And hey, with the Camaro still not in production, the lady makes a point. But not a great point. See my friends, next to Dodger Stadium yesterday I witnessed the scuzziest car imaginable. That’s right, a Fox-bodied Mustang 5.0 with Truck Nutz. Seriously, beat that.
