Embossed seats?

Embossed seats?

26th June 2008 12:04

I guess I don’t give a second thought to the seat in a car unless there’s a problem (say, related to driving position) or it’s unfathomably comfortable. And the way the seat looks isn’t really a consideration for me unless it’s really bad taste plastic beige or something - but even then, I’m not fussed by the aesthetics. If the seat meets minimum comfort requirements, I’ve pretty much forgotten about the seat I am in.

But some people are more interested in such things and seats are becoming a part of the trend towards greater vehicle customisation.

On the Fiat 500, seat covers are ‘embossed with patterns that have the appearance of decorative stitching’. That could perhaps be something that catches on. Can we devise our own patterns?

I guess we’ll eventually be able to submit our own interior and seat cover designs - imagine giving people free rein to put their own images on seat covers and where that could go?

Our Pen-and-Paper Doctors

Via
NY Times

With electronic health records seen widely as a way to make medical care better and possibly cheaper, it is disturbing how slowly they are being adopted by American physicians. If this country does not accelerate the conversion from paper to modern technologies, many of the gauzy promises of health care reform made by politicians and health planners will become irrelevant.

The bad news about electronic health records was gathered in a survey of 2,700 practicing physicians led by researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital, with financial support from the federal government and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The results were published online by The New England Journal of Medicine.

The study found that a paltry 4 percent of the doctors had a “fully functional” electronic records system that would allow them to view laboratory data, order prescriptions and help them make clinical decisions, while another 13 percent had more basic systems.

This is a startling contrast with other industrialized nations.

    Car Lust–This Specific Jeep Cherokee

While searching for photos for the Jeep Cherokee post, I stumbled across this photo of a much older Jeep Cherokee, a contemporary of the old Wagoneers. Just look at it–it’s completely gorgeous.

The most remarkable thing? According to the photographer (user Katie and Joe on Flickr), roughly five months ago it was for sale for only $5,000. That’s a fantastic price for such a pretty truck. It looks as if it just rolled off the showroom floor.

Somebody, please tear me away from my monitor. I just can’t stop looking at it.

Independent Subaru Repair & Service Specialist In Seattle.

Why choose a Specialist over a Generalist? Independent over Dealer?

As a specialist we know your car better, especially when it comes to the right way to make economical repairs that a general repair shop wouldn’t know about or a Subaru dealer would never consider. Sometimes a vehicle will develop a pattern failure and a real solution needs to be found or a more economical repair procedure can be had.

Through the years we have found solutions to replacing expensive parts by making repairs to existing components rather than just blindly install new ones. We have been able to become very good at repairs and service work by specializing in Subaru and we try to share this experience with our customer with lower labor prices.

We know what parts we can use on your Subaru without sacrificing longevity. Most automakers have become pure design and assemble companies leaving the parts manufacture to other companies. These auto parts companies are free to sell the same parts in aftermarket channels with out the Subaru logo. While in some cases in only makes sense to stick with Subaru parts especially when it comes to slower moving items that may have not been introduced in the aftermarket by the companies that originally made the parts for Subaru. There is also a good chance that the exact replacement part can be found at a 20% savings if you know how to look (we do).

From top to bottom we really know your Subaru well and want to help you get as many trouble free miles out of it as possible. We have seen these cars go well over 300k and I am the owner of a 1992 Legacy with 292k and counting. We take pride in servicing cars with higher miles and often have suggestions to help keep them going. Even though your Subaru may be getting up there in miles don’t discount just how long they will run.

Pininfarina Begins Slow Striptease of Hyperion

TURIN, Italy — Pininfarina has begun to strip back the veil of secrecy on its Hyperion special-body project, which is set for an August debut at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours. The Italian design house posted a sketch on its Web site showing a sleek, low-slung convertible in profile that is described as “an homage to the great prewar cars.”

Pininfarina provided just a few details about the Hyperion, saying it was commissioned by a “private client” and based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. The project “is truly unique in modern-day car production, firmly rooted in the history and heritage of the two brands at the core of the project,” said an accompanying statement.

“Pininfarina with Hyperion once again demonstrates its creativity and ability to interpret the different requests of the motorcar industry,” it added.

The Italian design house also said it plans to unveil an electric car concept at the 2008 Paris Auto Show in October.

What this means to you: Pininfarina isn’t resting on its laurels, with some exciting vehicles in the pipeline for later this year. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

    2009 Porsche Carrera 4

The Porsche released details on the all-wheel-drive versions Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, which are available as Coupe and Cabriolet.

Leaving the aesthetic and engine/gearbox changes aside as they’re the same with the RWD Carrera, the new generation Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S get an electronically controlled PTM Porsche Traction Management which replaces the former all-wheel drive with its viscous multiple-plate clutch. This system was initially developed for the 911 Turbo and modified for the Carrera 4 models.

Porsche promise that depending on the model, the new all-wheel-drive Carrera offers up to 8.5% more power, up to 12.9% more fuel economy, and 15.4% lower CO2 emissions.

The improvements on the 911 Carrera 4S with its 3.8-litre power unit are equally important, with maximum output up by 30 to 385Hp on overall fuel consumption down in the case of Carrera 4S Cabriolet with the PDK gearbox to 10.7 litres/100 km or 26.4 mpg imp. All all-wheel-drive Porsche Carrera models will be available at Porsche dealerships from October 25.

Does the $10,000 car make sense?

A $10,000 car - it just has to be cheap and nasty, doesn’t it? Or does it?

The phrase “you get what you pay for” does spring to mind.

Whether it’s kitchen appliances, garden tools or cars, if something’s cheap, you don’t expect a lot.

So news that Renault is considering importing the cut-price Dacia Sandero into Australia has been met with the usual reservations about safety and quality.

That’s fair enough, too, given the ordinary crash test results posted by some of the budget Chinese brands.

But the Sandero is likely to be a different proposition.

After all, is Renault going to import a car that damages its hard-won reputation for top-notch safety?

If it comes to Australia, this $10,000 car will wear a Renault badge, which means the French brand’s reputation is on the line. Local boss Rudi Koenig says the company won’t sell anything that demeans its brand.

So if you take safety concerns out of the equation, does the Sandero make sense as a city runabout?

It depends what you compare it against.

On the one hand, you can get a low mileage, second-hand Toyota Yaris with a safety package for $12,000 to $13,000 – or a brand new Hyundai Getz for $13,990.

Makes you think $10,000 might be too much to punt on an unknown brand?

But what about if you pitch it against another increasingly popular budget form of city runabout – the scooter?

After all, a top-of-the-range Piaggio two-wheeler can set you back almost $9000. Yes, it’s very economical, but with the Sandero you’ll get four extra seats, protection from the rain and better crash protection than any scooter on the planet.

So, does the Sandero make a compelling case as a point A to point B city car?

Or are you prepared to pay more for peace of mind?
