Mercedes McLaren SLR speedster (2009) spy photos and video

CAR Online has scooped the farewell edition of the SLR – a speedster version of Mercedes and McLaren’s outrageous supercar. Our spy photos and video conclusively reveal the chop-top SLR that’s somehow even more shocking than the SLR coupe and SLR roadster. Just look at those mini windscreen lips and imagine the speed at which flies will be rammed into your throat at 200mph. Utter madness.

Our new spy photos of the aero-screened machine turned up today and the camouflage seems pretty pointless to us; this is clearly an open ‘speedster’ style SLR. Just check out the amusing third headlamp camo detail.

Yes, it’s pretty difficult do disguise a 200+mph windscreen-less hypercar!

Indeed. The SLR’s lines are unmistakable despite the loss of the windscreen. The rear deck features twin roll hoops and double-humps – reminiscent of Mercedes’ classic ‘Silver Arrows’ racers. It’s not known what it’ll be called, but it’s internally codenamed Z119. What is certain is that it will be the most expensive SLR ever built, with a price tag in the region of €750,000 (ÂŁ600,000). Yikes.

That’s a huge amount of cash. What does it buy you?

Quite simply it’s a windscreen-less SLR. The existing models already use rigid carbonfibre so removing the windscreen is a relatively simple job for the engineers at McLaren’s HQ in Woking where the SLR is assembled.

Numbers will be limited – it’s thought that only 75 of these radical speedster SLRs will ever be built.

Formula One urges changes to cut costs

Formula One wants to cut team budgets in half and improve fuel efficiency by 2011 to improve racing. FIA president Max Mosley said Thursday that “urgent” changes were necessary because the sport was becoming “unsustainable.” “The major manufacturers are currently employing up to 1,000 people to put two cars on the grid,” Mosley said. “This is clearly unacceptable at a time when all these companies are facing difficult market conditions.” The ruling body said changes were necessary to “allow a back-of-the-grid independent team to operate profitably.” Such as leading teams providing technology to others at an affordable price. Teams are bracing for next season’s move to hybrid technology through an energy recovery system that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions without affecting performance. Read more here.

Fake Speed Bumps Don’t Fool Drivers for Long

Philadelphia, aka the City of Brotherly Love, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are testing fake speed bumps across the city. It sounds befuddling at first — I mean, we all know there’s a huge market for fake designer handbags and certain body parts, but speed bumps? Philly has strategically placed the flat pieces of blue, white and orange plastic, which are designed to look like 3-D pyramids, around the city.

Is GM About to Kill Saturn?

GMInsideNews says that the 2010 Saturn Aura, a clone of Opel’s new Insignia midsize sedan, is on hold. GM has already shipped much of the tooling to the Kansas facility where it was planning on churning-out the Aura in late 2009 as a 2010 model. While GM hasn’t made an announcement, GMI confirmed that the program has been paused, and speculates that the move will, at the very minimum, delay the next gen Aura’s arrival in America. This after recent rumors that one or more of GM’s brands is headed to the great automotive dealership in the sky. Is Saturn about to be strategically reviewed to death? We’re not exactly talking about a critical brand for GM here, with about 7k - 8k non-SUV sales per month. Lest we forget, GM did the same product pause prior to Oldsmobile’s euthanasia a few years ago. Talk about irony: Oldsmobile was starved for product and funding in the 1980s to develop the Saturn brand. On the other hand, some commenters at GMInsideNews see it differently: the pause is for fresh fuel efficient engine development. Or alternatively, Saturn will delay the Aura until 2012 or 2013, adding “Oh, and by 2013 GM will be picking up momentum at which time the 4-Door Sedan version of the Aura can return.” With apologies to all you extremists, I respectfully think that’s notgonnahappenatall.com.

Daily Podcast: Motor Trend’s Name is Mudd

Yesterday felt like some kind of tipping point. TTAC’s traffic didn’t jump (growth continues to be slow and organic). We didn’t land a new advertiser or score a junket or receive an award or introduce a new feature. We just kept doing what we do. Only this time, we were covering the June sales stats. Working as a team, our writers turned around the data faster than our rivals, and did so with our usual panache (a.k.a. lousy attitude). If persistence is the key to success, then we will be successful. But we will never forget that our reputation must exceed– I mean “proceed us.” We must stay resolutely not-to-say violently independent. I contrast this pledge with a new low in Motor Trend’s decline and fall, from Dealer Sales & Marketing. “Mudd Advertising announced the launch of a new marketing program that lets dealerships leverage the renowned MOTOR TREND name and MOTOR TREND “Car of the Year”, “Truck of the Year”, and “Sport Utility of the Year” logos. Through a special licensing agreement with MOTOR TREND, Mudd Advertising dealer clients can use these MOTOR TREND award logos in direct mail pieces and POP displays to attract more in-market buyers and increase vehicle sales.” When you have to literally sell your good name, it’s time to call it a day. Ours is just beginning.

Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Gin and Tonics Driving to The North Pole

It’s not even 9am, and it looks like we have a theme for the day: irresponsibility. Reuters reports that “A special edition of the [Top Gear] programme, aired in July last year, featured the show’s three presenters in a race to the Magnetic North Pole. Two of them, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, were driving a heavily-modified Toyota [Hilux] pick-up truck and were shown drinking gin and tonics as they did so. It prompted one viewer to complain that the footage was ‘grossly irresponsible.’” The show’s producers had one word for the allegation: bollocks [paraphrasing]. They claimed they’d filmed the segment in an uninhabitable area of the North Pole. Just in case the Inuit population took offense that that suggestion, the BBC’s Bad Boyz pointed out that they were in (on?) international waters “where no drink driving laws existed, and that the presenters were not shown to be drunk or out of control.” Not to mention “that at present in the UK, it’s legal to drink a small amount of alcohol and still drive.” So that’s alright then. Actually, no. “The BBC Trust upheld the complaint [made in APRIL] saying that drinking while driving “could be seen to glamorise the misuse of alcohol.” So.. that’s that then. Oh wait; the complainant was also peeved that the programme featured a bit about “parts of the anatomy and injuries to them that could shock.” That’s a reference to a frostbitten penis to you and me. Over to you Autoblog…

GM’s Chinese Déjà Vu Moment

While GM’s North American operation has been hemorrhaging money like a hemophiliac having heart surgery, its overseas operations have managed to turn enough profit to keep them from the bankruptcy court. Chinese sales are still growing, but the boom may go bust. In 2007, sales increased 19 percent. So far this year, sales are up 14 percent. Although China’s still the world’s fastest-growing auto market, raw material costs are soaring, and The People’s Republic is easing off fuel price subsidies. Through their “joint venture” (i.e. shotgun wedding) with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), GM is the Republic’s largest carmaker. But they’re beginning to face stiff[er] competition from Toyota and Volkswagen. Joseph Lau, vice president for GM China, told Bloomberg “Shanghai GM has been facing difficulties by relying on existing models to compete with rivals that have added new ones.” Sound familiar? Lau added that GM/SAIC has only one new model in the pipeline for this year: a locally-made hybrid version of the Buick LaCrosse. They’re adding one new model next year, a Buick sedan to compete with the rapidly-growing Camry and Corolla. Does anyone know the Chinese translation for “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”?

Canada Day Brings B.C. Automotive Cash Grab

Today marks Canada’s 141st anniversary. CTV reports that British Columbia’s motorists can now look forward to higher motoring costs. That’s right, Premier Gordon Campbell’s “carbon plan” goes into effect today, costing motorists an extra $0.024/L per fuel in carbon tax. According to Campbell, the plan is “revenue neutral;” any extra revenue will be offset by income tax cuts. The aim, of course, is to tax consumption rather than income, thereby providing an incentive to reduce fuel consumption. Obviously, some of the highest gas prices in the ten provinces (as B.C. has) were not enough. Despite assurance from Campbell, many British Columbians are weary. How can its provisions be enforced without earmarking funds and major transparency?

E85 Boondoggle of the Day: Ethanol Suppliers Go Belly-Up

While we wait for automaker bankruptcy filings, we have a little schadenfreude from a different (but equally deserving) sector to keep you going. Reuters reports that spiraling foodstock costs are tearing a giant hole in profit margins for domestic ethanol suppliers, causing a spate of bankruptcy filings. Corn (the main ingredient for domestically-produced ethanol) was already hitting record prices before the recent deluge in the Midwest. Post-flooding price spikes have wrought havoc on the whole ethanol business plan. Alex Moglia of Moglia Advisors, a biofuel consultancy group, tells Reuters that 12 biodiesel and ethanol plants have declared bankruptcy in recent months, with more to follow. The plants that are still open are typically producing at about half capacity, says Moglia. Ironically, a major problem for domestic ethanol producers is the transportation of their fuel. The majority of ethanol refineries are in the Midwest, which has a massive oversupply of corn juice. High fuel costs are preventing America’s alternative fuel from reaching larger markets on either coast at competitive prices. Ultimately, the big boys of ethanol– your ADMs, and VersaSuns– will survive the hard times for ethanol producers, thanks to agribusiness diversification. It’s the little guys that are being forced out of business, as reality begins to hit home for America’s “magic fuel.” Even so, their elected officials are probably lobbying for bailouts as we speak.

Fiat 500 picnic

Fiat 500 picnic

2nd July 2008 19:03

Apologies if you can’t open the below link - there might be cookies that mean I’m signed up but you’re not (it’s voodoo). The Fiat press release provided me with 30 secs of amusement though. Fiat is planning an international series of events for the birthday of the 500.

Here’s a flavour: ‘….each “500 PICNIC” is aiming to satisfy specific national tastes by featuring local attractions: for example, in South Africa, where the initiative coincides with a commercial debut of the FIAT 500, symbolic sites like Table Mountain, the vineyards of Groot Constantia, and the zoological gardens of Johannesburg have been chosen.

‘In Tokyo, instead, the event is slated to take place along the ocean in Kasai Rinkai Park, where an “exotic” Italian-style brunch will be offered while guests, together with an emerging Japanese artist, will be able to create works of art with recycled materials.

‘The “500 PICNIC” events in Holland, Poland, and Greece have been organised near the sea as well. For example, in Rotterdam, the party will be on a boat, but the guests will be able to show off their cars anyway by lining them up along the quay; in Hel the guests will celebrate at the famous FIAT Playa of this Polish seaside resort; finally, in Athens, the event will take place at Akanthus, an exclusive hot spot overlooking the sea, and will conclude with spectacular fireworks over the water.

‘In Switzerland the party will open with a parade of FIAT 500s that will leave from the various dealerships to reach the lake in Zurich, where enjoyable excursions in pedal-boats and the delivery of ten FIAT 500s are planned.’

And in UK?

‘London, instead, will host the event at the prestigious [eh?] Alexandra Park, where guests will spend a day of relaxation and good food, livened up with street games, sports, and music.’

Yep, it’s a simple piss-up.

Music, art, and togetherness: celebrate the “500 PICNIC” on July 5
