For the past six years or so, I steered clear of SUVs. A car guy bought cars. End of story. And now, suddenly, I want one. Not a cute ute or anything as sensible as a Honda Pilot, mind you (I’d rather ride a Vespa). But an authentic, gas-guzzling off roader: a Land Rover Discovery or whatever the stupid alphanumeric is for it now [LR3]. Or a Jeep Wrangler. I’d even go supervulgar and ride around in a Mercedes G500. Or a Toyota Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser or Nissan Xterra. If a stick shift is available, even better. Not that I’d actually take my SUV off road. I just like the image. Is that so horrible? Does it really make me a bad person? I certainly hope so.Â

Mr Lieberman, and Mr Mehta, I have to concede defeat. There will be no running of the Audi V8 Uber-quattro at the Texas event, as I now posess a lump of modern art sculpted by Mother Nature herself, instead of an all-dominating all-wheel drive wonder. Recently, a fire started in the fields next to the Audi due to a severe lightning storm. The flames swept across the fields like the opening lines to “Oklahoma!” and turned the Audi into a Renault Fuego, complete with a fried fringe on top. The carbon fiber hood melted to form a really interesting mold of the now carbonized engine. At least the old Audi Fox GTI survived intact, an even more irreplaceable Teutonic masterpiece. I guess I can’t be too despondent, as I have also learned the military will not let me compete, as I will be deploying to the Middle East shortly, where I will spend some much needed time flogging Nissan Urvans, and loathing over Hyundai Trajets. Good luck Sajeev, take video and pictures of the Lincoln of the Apocolypse to share with me, and the Best and Brightest.

Al Gore’s latest
18th July 2008 13:26
Al Gore certainly knows how to make the news. He’s just said that the US needs to do away with all forms of carbon-emitting electricity production within ten years (er, easier said than done). Yep, that will grab some attention. At least he should spark some serious debate about energy policy in the US and that’s no bad thing in a run-up to a presidential election.
Must admit, I did like this line: “We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that has to change.”
Just beware of politicians struggling to understand the energy problem or coming out with glib lines that they think will appeal to the populace. I actually would credit Gore with having done some work on the subject and to have developed his opinion as a result of that. He must know how difficult it would be to achieve what he is suggesting but wants to move the parameters of the debate in the US at this juncture.
I am not so sure our own prime minister has got a handle on the issues. He seems generally all over the place and to say he wants all new cars sold in Britain to be hybrids or electric vehicles by 2020 suggests a worryingly superficial analysis and/or inadequate briefing from his advisers. He should pick his words carefully, especially as he is about to clober hard-pressed motorists with higher taxes. Still, it’s not quite as bad as ‘eat up your scraps’ I suppose. The man needs to get a grip on how he’s coming across.

India Inc bets on smart offices to boost productivity
MUMBAI: Smart offices can do a lot in boosting productivity. Corporate India is convinced about this, and companies are going all-out to ensure that their offices are smarter, so that their employees work in a hassle-free environment.
The Smart Workplace Award, instituted by The Economic Times in association with IT majors Acer and Intel, recognises India Inc’s efforts in this direction.
This year, of 600 companies that vied for the top places in various categories, 20 emerged as winners. IndusInd Bank and Bajaj Capital won Smart Workplaces Awards in the financial services vertical, while IndianOil, Aditya Birla Management Corporation, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative, GE Global Research and Bharat Petroleum Corporation won awards in the industrial market space.

I saw this ride in a restaurant parking lot a couple weekends ago. It’s a 1955 Buick Special that has been, shall we say, aggressively customized into a hot rod.
Every square inch of the vehicle has been pinstriped–by hand. The patterns are intricate and complex. As you can tell from the closeup of the hood below, it took some serious time and a lot of talent to do this. (The swooping Spirograph raptor is cool enough, but it’s the little golfer hitting a cartoon bomb with a 1 wood that really sets it off!)
The owner of this machine clearly has a sense of humor. Along the bottom of the left rear quarter window is an inscription: “Nothing Is Too Much . . . If It’s Tastefully Overdone.”
Words to live by.

DETROIT — The Saturn “Kiss My Astra” contest is worth looking into, not just for the chance to win a 2008 Saturn Astra XR five-door hatchback, but for the opportunity to get a sense of what kind of kisser GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz may be. In its promotional material for the contest, the Detroit automaker issued two bizarre photos of Lutz laying his lips on an Astra outside corporate headquarters here.
In one photo, Lutz is shown with one foot awkwardly twisting off a curb as he snogs the roof line of the Astra with puckered lips; in another, he appears to be stroking the Astra while kissing its rear bumper.
To participate in the contest, contestants can kiss any Astra and then upload the photo of the kiss at I M Saturn. The photos will be judged in September by the “online Saturn community,” according to GM. To be eligible, contestants must log on and join the ImSaturn online network.
That Saturn Astra XR has a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.
What this means to you: GM public relations can apparently talk Lutz into any goofy idea, or is it the other way around? But if we get a vote, Lutz should win the Astra. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Ford has created a new viral campaign for its new subcompact hatch car dubbed “Fiesta Love Factory”. I am accused of being a bit slow sometimes, but I don’t even know what they are attempting to communicate with these ads. Rastamans? Perhaps these spots are a bit silly and memorable, but I just don’t understand what about this would encourage me to buy a Ford Fiesta.

For more than a month, KickingTires has been compiling helpful gas-saving tips in our Gas-Saving Moment of the Day. Because fuel prices aren’t showing any sign of returning to Earth just yet, CarsCast has compiled our 30 favorite suggestions. The catch? Lindsay and Stephen have only four minutes to deliver them all to the viewing public. What follows is an epic journey involving a Dodge Viper, bulk purchases of toilet paper and a hastily eaten cheeseburger. Be sure to stick around past the credits.
