Romania automotive conference

There is a fair bit going on in Romania’s auto industry these days. We recently had a colourful feature from Mark ‘Coolbear’ Bursa that neatly interweaved developments at Dacia with the country’s recent history.

A conference firm, WBR,В has been in touch with me over an event, AutoRomania08 (below link) that’s coming up which does actually look quite good in terms of the programme and speakers.

The Romanian prime minister is even opening the event - a clear sign of how strategically important the auto industry and its inward investment has become to the Romanian government.

Did you hear that the European Commission has suspended all funding for neighbouring Bulgaria because the money was being syphonedВ into the pockets of organised criminals?

I gather there are problems in Romania, too - though not as bad as Bulgaria - and it is also close to having penalties imposed by the EU unless it gets busier with reforms and tackling corruption. Corruption inquiries there are not exactly pursued vigorously, according to the Commission.

If you go to the conference you can always ask the prime minister how reforms and the battle against corruption are going. Maybe over coffee rather than in front of everyone.

THE UN-COMFORT ZONE With Robert Wilson: New Column For APS Blog

What’s Pushing Your Buttons?

By ROBERT WILSON

What motivates you? That’s the question I’d like to ask in this inaugural column on motivation. Are you motivated by fame, fortune or fear. Or is it something deeper that fans the flames inside of you. Perhaps you are like Jeanne Louise Calment whose burning desire enabled her to do something that no other human being has done before. A feat so spectacular that it generated headlines around the globe, got her a role in a motion picture, and landed her in the Guinness Book of World Records. A record that has yet to be beaten.

Jeanne Louise, however, did not initially motivate herself. It was someone else who drew the line in the sand. But, it became a line she was determined to cross.

In motivation we talk about getting outside of one’s comfort zone. It is only when we are uncomfortable that we begin to get motivated. Usually to get back into our comfort zone as quickly as possible.

Born into the family of a middle-class store owner, Calment was firmly entrenched in her comfort zone. At age 21 she married a wealthy store owner and lived a life of leisure. She pursued her hobbies of tennis, the opera, and sampling France’s famous wines. Over the years she met Impressionist painter Van Gogh; watched the
erection of the Eiffel Tower; and attended the funeral of Hunchback of Notre Dame, author, Victor Hugo.

Twenty years after her husband passed away, she had reached a stage in life where she had pretty much achieved everything that she was Going to achieve. Then along came a lawyer. The lawyer made Jeanne Louise a proposition. She accepted it. He thought he was simply Making a smart business deal. Inadvertently he gave her a goal. It
took her 30 years to achieve it, but achieve it she did.

Are you willing to keep your goals alive for 30 years? At what point do you give up? Thomas Edison never gave up, instead he said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Winston Churchill during the bleakest hours of World War II kept an entire country motivated with this die-hard conviction: “We shall defend our
Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches… in the fields and in the streets… we shall never surrender.”

Many of us give up too soon because we set limits on our goals. Achieving a goal begins with determination. Then it’s just a matter of our giving them attention and energy.

When Jeanne Louise was 92 years old, attorney FranГ§ois Raffray, age 47, offered to pay her $500 per month (a fortune in 1967) for the rest of her life, if she would leave her house to him in her will. According to the actuarial tables it was a great deal. Here was an heir-less woman who had survived her husband, children, and grandchildren. A woman who was just biding her time with nothing to live for. That is until Raffray came along and offered up the “sucker-bet” that she would soon die. It was motivation enough for Jeanne, who was determined to beat the lawyer. Thirty years later, Raffray became the “sucker” when he passed away first at age 77.

When asked about this by the press, Calment simply said, “In life, one sometimes make bad deals.” Having met her goal, Jeanne passed away five months later. But on her way to this end, she achieved something else: at 122 years old, she became the oldest person to have ever lived.

In future articles we’ll examine further the ways in which motivation works. How to motivate ourselves, our employees, customers, volunteers, friends, loved ones and children. I would like to get your feedback on which of these areas of motivation are of most interest to you. I’d also like to hear your stories of how you may have overcome adversity and what pushed you to go the distance. Please email me with your suggestions and stories.

“Wouldn’t you really rather have a … Maserati???”

There was an interesting comment the other day at the website of Professor Glenn Reynolds, who is better known on the Internet as “the Instapundit“:

“Today, coming out from lunch, the Insta-Daughter and I saw a Maserati Quattroporte parked next to my Mazda. I thought it looked very nice, especially the interior, but the Insta-Daughter pronounced it ‘ugly’ and added ‘I thought it was a Buick until you pointed it out.’ “

Could this possibly be true? Let’s look at the evidence.

Exhibit A is a current-production Buick LaCrosse in an official Buick advertising image:

It’s a four-door sedan in the low-drag aerodynamic style that’s all the rage these days. Note the rounded “landscape” grille faired in to the bumper, with a Buick badge in the center, and the “exhaust port” trim on the front fenders. The LaCrosse is 198 inches long, seats five, and can be had with a 300-horsepower V-8.

Now, on to Exhibit B–the Maserati Quattroporte’s official photo:

Like the Buick, it’s a low-drag, aerodynamic-style four-door sedan that seats five. Note the rounded “landscape” grille faired in to the bumper, with the Maserati badge in the center and the “exhaust port” trim on the front fenders–very similar to the Buick. The Quattroporte’s overall length is 190.98 inches–less than an inch different than the LaCrosse. The Maser comes with a 400-horsepower V-8.

From ten yards away, there’s not a whole lot of difference. “Ugly” is a subjective judgment on which reasonable people can disagree, but young Miss Reynolds is absolutely right about one thing: the Maserati looks like a Buick.

That’s not to say that the two are Interchangeable. Far from it:

  • The Maserati’s interior is a lot plusher.
  • The Maserati will go way faster, and is probably a lot more fun to drive.
  • The Buick gets better gas mileage.
  • Saying “I just got a new Maserati” to cocktail party guests is more impressive than saying “I just got a new Buick.”
  • You’re unlikely to see a Maserati in the parking lot at Target.
  • Ted Nugent doesn’t mention Buicks in “Wango Tango.”
  • You can get parts for the Buick from your local auto parts store and from the fine folks who sponsor Car Lust. Parts for the Maserati … not so available.

Most important:

  • You can actually afford the Buick.В

In fact, for the sticker price of a single Maserati Quattroporte, you could get three top-of-the-line Buick LaCrosses and have enough left over to widen the driveway so you can park them all off-street.

For the people in the Maserati’s target demographic, price is not a major consideration. Still, if you were a Maserati customer, would it not bother you a bit to pull into the parking deck and find that the rare and distinctive Italian supercar you just put down six figures for is only barely distinguishable from your office manager’s Buick?

How To Prepare Your Subaru Or Any Other Car You Own For A Vacation Or Trip

Click stars to vote (left is low, right is high)

В Loading …

At least a week before taking a trip in your Subaru or any other car for that matter, you should make sure it’s ready to take you to your destination and more importantly, back.

Here are some things that should be inspected before you go.

Oil level and condition, if the trip is a thousand miles long and the oil will become due to change during the trip, change it before you go.

Coolant level, condition and boil protection. That’s right anti-freeze is also anti-boil and if your car doesn’t have the proper mix you are taking a big chance on a summer trip. Included in this in inspection should be a check of the belts and hoses.

Tires, tires, tires and tires. The condition of all of your tires including, the spare need to be looked at before you depart. Also tires have a DOT code that also gives the date the tires were produced. Check this date and if your tires are older than 5 years you may want to consider replacing them. Tires that are old have a greater chance of coming apart at high speeds on the freeway when they are hot.

It is just not enough to make sure the tires are properly inflated and have good tread life.

Brakes should be inspected and serviced if needed.

The drive train, steering and suspension should be inspected as well.

All of the remaining fluids and filters should be serviced or replaced as needed.

The lights should all be checked especially the license plate bulbs that are almost always out with you realizing it.

Having a good emergency kit in your car that includes jumper cables, flares, first aid, flashlight and a basic set of tools is also highly recommended as well.

While there is no guarantee that something wont happen with your car on a trip, the above steps can go a long way to preventing it.

Mercedes-Benz Kicks off Wide-Ranging Recall for Some 2003-’09 Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mercedes-Benz is recalling 404 units of 11 different models, including the 2009 SL and SLK, to fix a software problem that could result in problems with fuel gauge readings and the speedometer.

In documents filed recently with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mercedes-Benz said the problem involves an incorrect software calibration number coding. The problem “can affect a number of vehicle safety and emission functions,” says NHTSA.

Among the issues could be problems with fuel-gauge readings, a stuck fuel-level sensor that may not be displayed in the instrument cluster, a check-engine light that may illuminate incorrectly and a speedometer that “may be out of tolerance.”

“In the event of a vehicle crash, the electrical fuel pump may not receive a crash signal that is required for the fuel pump to disconnect and prevent future fuel delivery as designed,” said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem.

The recall involves the 2006-’08 M-Class and R-Class; the 2005-’09 SLK; the 2005-’08 C-Class; the 2003-’04 and 2006-’08 CLK-Class; the 2003-’08 E-Class; the 2004 and 2008 CL-Class; the 2008 CLS-Class; the 2004 and 2007-’08 S-Class; the 2003 G-Class and the 2003-’04, 2006 and 2009 SL-Class.

The recall is expected to begin in August. Dealers will recode the software calibration number at no charge. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.

What this means to you: If you own any of the aforementioned models, better have them checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Saturn Aura

General Motors says the new Vauxhall/Opel Insignia, will make its global debut at London Motor Show, will be the basis for the new Saturn Aura.

The Aura will have a completely different skin and interior, but sub-systems, suspensions and powertrains will be shared, though we are not sure just how many of the six available gas and diesel engines in the Euro-only Opel will make their way Stateside.

GM also shot down the possibility of a coupe version of the Insignia making production.

What Ford Will Look Like in 2012

After we wrote our reports on the upcoming Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineups, Cars.com intern Colin Bird pointed out a few interesting tidbits Ford mentioned about those future lineups beyond what we already covered.

Using the mantra “One Ford,” the company says it will build just one global midsize sedan, unifying the American Ford Fusion and European Ford Mondeo in the next five years. We’re hoping the Mondeo (shown above) wins out. That would make sense, as it is considerably smaller than the Ford Taurus.

American cars: a difference of opinion

so….is this a blog about American cars or family values?

By the way, the reason why many people can admire older American cars, as opposed to new ones, is because there was a (maybe accidental) classic beauty in their simplicity.

It’s not dissimilar here. Although, our local products until recently reeked of cheapness and to some degree still do.
