2009 Honda Ridgeline Adds Power, New Look and More Standard Equipment
Gutsier torque curve, bolder styling and standard trailer hitch highlight more than 50 significant upgrades and new features to an already innovative truck

Updated for 2009 with a total of 50 significant changes and new features, the Honda Ridgeline takes on a bolder look and feel with new exterior and interior styling along with a more powerful engine. A trailer hitch becomes standard on every model, and newly-introduced premium features include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and a rearview backup camera on Ridgeline RTL models equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System. The Ridgeline continues to be the only pickup truck available with a spacious In-Bed Trunk™ that provides hidden, dry and secure storage capable of swallowing luggage, tool boxes and coolers.

Front and rear styling updates combine to create a more-chiseled overall appearance with revisions to the grille, bumpers, and headlight and taillight color combinations. Inside, styling updates include revised three-dimensional-style meters, a new steering wheel design, and enhanced controls, buttons and displays for the air conditioning, audio, cruise control and headlights. New technology-friendly features include the addition of a 115-volt power outlet on the Ridgeline RTL, MP3/auxiliary input jack on the Ridgeline RTS and RTL, and all audio systems become MP3/WMA compatible. New safety features include active front seat head restraints and daytime running lights. Capable of accommodating 4-foot-wide sheets of plywood between the wheel wells, the composite cargo bed, gains two cargo tie-down points (eight total).

“The Ridgeline channels the company’s vast experience with motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, marine engines, personal water craft, power equipment and automotive products,” said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The end result is a truck designed to best meet the needs of people who take family, work and recreation seriously. All-around, it’s the right tool for the job.”

The four-door, five-passenger Ridgeline is built on a closed-box, unit-body frame that combines the strength characteristics of a ladder frame with the packaging and handling advantages of a unit-body design. All 2009 Ridgelines are powered by a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine. A 5-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission and a Variable Torque Management® 4-wheel drive system (VTM-4®) are standard. The EPA rates city/highway/combined fuel economy at 15/20/17. A fully-independent suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension design in the rear contribute to a smooth ride and responsive handling. Standard equipment for towing includes an integrated tow hitch, transmission and oil coolers, heavy duty brakes, dual radiator fans and a wiring harness for a 7-pin trailer hook up (pre-wiring only on RT). Maximum recommended tow capacity is 5,000 pounds.

A 5-foot-long composite cargo bed provides a half-ton payload rating of 1,100 lbs. Four cargo area lights illuminate both the bed and the in-bed trunk. A dual-action tailgate opens down for traditional access to the cargo area or to the side for ease-of-access to the lockable In-Bed Trunk. New accessories for 2009 include a motorcycle bed extender and a bed-mount bicycle attachment, in addition to a wide variety of existing accessories that are designed to accommodate motorcycles and ATVs.

Powertrain
The all-aluminum, 60-degree, SOHC 3.5-liter VTEC engine produces 250-horsepower at 5700 rpm and 247 lb-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. The Ridgeline’s variable valve timing enhances low rpm torque while extending high rpm horsepower for a broad, confidence-inspiring power band. For 2009, the engine produces three more horsepower and a torque curve that is up to 10 lb-ft. broader at RPMs as low as 2500 - while maintaining the same EPA-rated fuel economy as 2008 and its CARB Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle certification.

The majority of the additional power is achieved through a new camshaft profile tuned for maximum torque, larger intake valves and a revised dual-stage intake manifold capable of a higher flow rate (now made from ultra-lightweight magnesium instead of aluminum).

A closer look inside the engine bay reveals more technical enhancements. Improved engine control electronics incorporate a 6-degree crank pulse sensor for enhanced knock control. An airflow meter within the air intake increases fuel injection precision. Optimized coolant passages in the engine block increase cooling performance and allow for more advanced ignition timing, contributing to power in demanding situations. A new EGR valve runs from behind one of the close-coupled catalytic converters to the cylinder head cover.

Upgrades have also been made to the starter motor, now more powerful and quick-starting. Cranking time has been reduced to the point where full engine ignition occurs in ultra-quick succession from the point where the key reaches the start position.

Revised transmission gear ratios are configured to take advantage of the additional engine torque for responsive acceleration during normal driving, towing or hauling heavy cargo loads. Gears 3 and 4 are approximately 5 percent lower to accommodate enhanced passing performance.

The fully-automatic VTM-4 system provides confident, decision-free operation in rain, snow, ice, sand and mud, while also improving on-road and towing performance by distributing torque to all four wheels as needed. The system operates predominately in front-wheel-drive during dry-pavement cruising conditions and continuously proportions torque to the rear wheels during acceleration and low traction situations.

The Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system, commonly referred to as electronic stability control, can apply braking force to a wheel with low traction and direct driving force to the wheel with more traction. For the rear differential, a “VTM-4″ lock button located on the instrument panel allows the driver to temporarily hold engagement of both rear wheels to aid traction while in gears “1″ and “2″ at speeds of up to 18 mph.

Chassis
Designed for 1,550-pound total vehicle payload toughness, the Ridgeline integrates a fully-independent suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link with trailing arm design in the rear. The VSA system with active yaw control monitors lateral (cornering) stability and discretely integrates traction control, four-wheel drive, anti-lock braking, throttle control and stability control functions by modulating brake power at each wheel and controlling throttle input. The VSA system is designed to feel smooth and unobtrusive for neutral, predictable and safe handling characteristics.

The heavy duty braking system includes 12.6-inch front and 13.1-inch rear 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Wheels on the Ridgeline RT are 17×7.5-inch steel affairs; the Ridgeline RTS upgrades to alloy. P245/65 R17 all-season tires are standard on the Ridgeline RT and RTS. The Ridgeline RTL is equipped with new-for-2009 18×7.5-inch alloy wheels and P245/60 R18 all-season tires. A standard tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) provides individual low pressure warnings. A tow hitch becomes standard equipment on every 2009 model and a 7-pin wiring harness is included on the Ridgeline RTS and RTL. The 22-gallon fuel tank provides a maximum highway driving range of up to 373 miles based on the EPA-rated combined city/highway fuel economy and the fuel tank capacity.

Body
The closed-box, unit-body architecture delivers vastly superior rigidity compared to traditional body-on-frame designs and provides the foundation for the Ridgeline’s spacious interior cabin and bed, outstanding safety performance and class-leading ride and handling performance.

By choosing a unit body frame with an integrated and fully boxed ladder structure as the base for the Ridgeline, the interior can have more space and the body can be more rigid while containing multiple load paths for enhanced collision energy management. The elimination of traditional body-on-frame construction allows for another feature no other truck product can claim - a spacious In-Bed Trunk with 8.5 cubic feet of secure storage.

Honda’s approach to exterior styling on the Ridgeline incorporates a machined billet architecture styling approach for a solid, strong one-piece appearance. No separation between the bed and the cab exists. Designed to appear modern and athletic, the Ridgeline incorporates short front and rear overhangs with integrated bumpers, a large and dominating grille connected to a long and expansive hood, large door handles, and large truck-style side mirrors for good rear vision while towing. The windshield wipers have a heated wiper zone that enhance wiper performance and minimize ice scraping in cold, winter driving conditions.

For 2009, vehicle length measures 207.0 inches, up 0.2 inches due to the new front and rear bumper design. All other key dimensions remain the same: wheelbase 122.0 inches, height 70.3 inches, width 76.3 inches, track front/rear 67.1/66.9 inches, and ground clearance 8.2 inches. The approach, rampover and departure angles (in degrees) measure 24.5, 21.0 and 22.0, respectively.

The cargo area measures 49.5 inches wide between the wheel wells, 20.7 inches deep and 60.0 inches long (79.0 inches with the load-supporting tailgate in the down position). The tailgate is rated to support up to 300 pounds (while the vehicle is moving) and can easily close with contaminates like sand, snow or mud in the space between the bumper and the tailgate.

Interior
The interior takes advantage of the Ridgeline’s superior unit-body packaging efficiency to deliver full-size interior space dimensions while maintaining a garage-friendly, mid-size exterior footprint. The driving position provides ergonomically comfortable access to large and easy-to-use controls - the majority of which become more tactile and user-friendly for 2009.

The large multi-function console features a sliding armrest and sliding lower tray - each with a hidden storage area. Other console storage areas accommodate items both large and small like mobile phones, beverages, compact discs and portable digital music players.

The 60/40 lift-up rear seats feature a storage area underneath large enough to accommodate a golf bag. Plus, the rear seating area can be quickly converted for cargo duty by lifting the seats up to create enough room for a full-size mountain bike with the front tire removed. Family-friendly, the rear seat incorporates three LATCH positions.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System® with Voice Recognition and Zagat Survey™ restaurant information is available on RTL models and includes XM Satellite Radio®. An off-road tracking function remembers where the vehicle has traveled within unmapped regions.

Safety
The 2006 Ridgeline was the first-ever 4-door pickup to receive the federal government’s top 5-star safety rating, the highest safety rating possible, for both frontal and side impacts. The 2009 Ridgeline continues to achieve the highest 5-star ratings for frontal and side impacts. All Ridgelines are equipped with standard anti-lock brakes; VSA; brake assist; advanced dual-stage, dual-threshold driver’s and front passenger’s SRS airbags; front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System(OPDS); two-row side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front seat active head restraints; a tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights.

Trim Levels
Standard comfort and convenience features on the Ridgeline RT include an integrated trailer hitch, pre-wiring for 7-pin trailer wiring, trip computer with instaneous and average fuel economy; air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; power windows and door locks; power sliding rear window; cruise control; keyless entry; automatic heated wiper zone; a six-speaker, 100-watt audio system with CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability; 60/40 split lift-up rear seat with underseat storage;.

The Ridgeline RTS adds alloy wheels; a 7-pin trailer wiring connector; body-color painted door handles; painted inner grille surfaces; a seven-speaker 160-watt audio system with subwoofer and six-disc in-dash audio system; steering wheel-mounted controls; an auxiliary audio input jack; dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support; privacy glass; and all-weather floor mats.

The RTL adds a leather-trimmed interior with heated front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels; fog lights, moonroof, a 110-volt power outlet, XM® Satellite Radio, HomeLink® remote system, carpeted floor mats, and a compass in the rearview mirror. A Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition is available (and replaces the rear-view mirror interior compass). Vehicles equipped with the navigation system also include Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and a multi-information display.

2010 Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z spotted on the street! The car fan from VWVortex board caught a mildly disguised Nissan 370Z on the freeway. The Nissan 370Z expected to make debut in Los Angeles this November.

It’s been widely reported that the 2010 370Z will be shortened by four inches and will ride on a slightly widened track, but without a profile shot, it’s hard to tell. The rear three-quarter view shows reworked rear windows that are slightly smaller, with the bottom edge angling steeply towards the roofline. The rear glass of the hatch is sunken in, and incorporates a small spoiler into the trunk lid, while the fenders appear wider than the outgoing model and the tail lamps are equipped with LEDs.

Up front, the restyled headlamps are obscured by the camouflage, but the redesigned front fascia is easily identifiable, as is the tweaked hood, which features a slight power bulge flanked by two accent lines stretching from the windshield to the bumper.

Euro hatch leaves boy racers in its wake

The Mitsubishi Evolution and Subaru WRX are widely regarded as two of the best small sports cars on the planet.

Their reputation for razor-sharp, rally-bred road manners and explosive turbocharged power have won them plenty of hearts among car enthusiasts.

But the raw performance has always come at the cost of comfort and refinement.

Now both makers have decided to position their cars upmarket, with more creature comforts and softer suspension designed to take the fight to expensive Euro hatches such as the Audi S3.

Problem is, they are now also the same price as – or more expensive than - the Audis and Volkswagens of this world.

And in our opinion, their chances of stealing customers from the Germans are pretty slim.

There’s no doubting the fact that the Evolution X and Subaru WRX STI are sharper implements than the S3. They are quicker in a straight line and more agile through corners. So why don’t they win?

In short because the Audi S3 is more versatile. It is better at providing boy racer thrills than the Japanese pair is at delivering Euro luxury.

Despite all their claims to being more refined, the Evolution and STI we drove couldn’t match the S3 for comfort and class.

They may want a more refined clientele, but they still sport the loud boy racer looks of their predecessors. Euro hatch buyers want something more subtle.

Inside, the two Japanese cars provide more supportive racing seats, but the rest of the cabin is a let down. The Subaru is marginally better than the Mitsubishi, but both have lots of hard shiny plastic and cheap-looking switchgear.

Now I’m sure the purists will howl me down here and call me “soft” but performance isn’t the be-all and end-all of a hot hatch (or sedan in the Evo’s case). Besides, the Audi S3 is still impressively quick.

We came across the same thing with the Volkswagen GTI and the Renault Sport R26 Megane. Sure, the Megane was better on a racetrack, but the GTI was a more cohesive blend of style, performance and comfort. It had a great exhaust note too.

The S3 was the same. The engine was punchy at low revs, it sounded sportier and it was more than adequate for nine-tenths driving.

Do you agree with the verdict or do you think performance should be the number one criterion for a test of this kind?

All my own fault

Driver error costs Winterbottom V8 lead.

Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander yesterday took over the V8 Supercar championship lead after another day of heartbreak for Ford star Mark Winterbottom at Winton Raceway.

The Ford Performance Racing (FPR) top-gun dramatically crashed out of contention in the final race after clawing his way to the front of the grid with the drive of the year in race two.

Winterbottom looked to have put his race one woes behind him when he blasted out of the blocks and took the race lead. But, once again, disaster struck for the man dubbed “Frosty”.

With only clear road in front of him, the Blacktown boy slewed into the kitty-litter after a wheel lock-up on turn one. He was smashed back into the mud by Holden’s Todd Kelly after attempting to re-enter the track and was forced to sit helpless as his championship lead was lost to bitter rival Tander.

“I am very disappointed,” Winterbottom said after the race. “Not because I lost the championship lead but because I made a mistake. It was just driver error. I couldn’t see Garth [Tander] there and when I turned in, it just locked the tyre. It was pretty tough conditions on cold tyres but you pride yourself on making no mistakes. You put a lot of pressure on yourself so you don’t like to make errors.”

Earlier in the day Winterbottom was described by FPR boss Tim Edwards as a “true champion” after taking out second place in race two. To do so he showed amazing skill and speed to claw his way back from 21st position after a flat tyre ruined his first race.

But on a wild weekend of racing, Tander emerged from the carnage to take the round win and reclaim the championship lead.

“It has been a tough time for Holden fans lately so it is great to be up here,” Tander said. “The car was very good. We obviously had some problems with the steering in race one but it was very good during races two and three today. I knew if we could get some clear air than we could do the job. It is disappointing for Mark [Winterbottom]. But at the end of the day you have to stay on the track.”

In a chaotic start to race two, Supercheap Autos Russell Ingall, Tasman Motorsport’s Jason Richards, HRTs Mark Skaife and Garry Rogers Motorsports (GRM) Michael Caruso all came to grief in a spectacular collision. All cars were unable to finish the race.

Team Vodafone driver Jamie Whincup finished the Winton round in second place after taking out race one, while Jim Beam’s Will Davison finished third after winning race two.

Porsche Cayman S

The dream factory at Porsche has just gone to work on the newest model in the range, the Cayman S.

It has taken inspiration from the red-hot 911 GT3 RS to create a car which promises more power, punch and pace.

But the dream machine is a nightmare for fans in Australia, as there is no chance of the Cayman S Sport making it downunder.

“It won’t be coming. We’re not taking it,” is the blunt bottom line from Paul Ellis, spokesman for Porsche Cars Australia.

It’s the second time in recent weeks that a go-faster hero car from Europe has missed the boat, following the RenaultSport Megane R26 R.

In the case of the Porsche, only 700 cars are being built and most are already committed to homes in Europe, the USA and the Middle East.

The Sport is the first significant tweak on the Cayman, which was launched in the back end of 2005 using a combination of parts from the baby Boxster and the flagship 911, but with a unique body and handling which is the sharpest in the Porsche family.

The Cayman Sport has not been recognised with an RS badge but the look and two of the colours - electric orange and kermit green - come directly from the track-ready GT3 RS.

The key to the upgrade is a 3.5-litre flat six which has been tweaked for 225 kiloWatts, but the car also gets standard Porsche Active Suspension Management for a lowered look which trims 10 millimetres from the ride height.

There are also five millimetre spacers behind the wheels to push the special 19-inch SportDesign alloys deeper into the arches. And Porsche claims more grip from the rubber on the road.

The mechanical picture is completed with a sports exhaust that punches a pair of exhausts out from the tail.

The Cayman Sport also picks up Bi-Xenon headlamps, the Sports Chrono package which includes a stopwatch in the dash, and sports leather seats.

The visual upgrade runs to blacked-out alloys, mirrors and air intakes, as well as a black-accent pack in the cabin and alcantara trimming for the steering wheel and handbrake lever.

Apart from the RS orange and red colour combinations, the Sport can be splashed in black, Guards Red, Speed Yellow, Carrera White and Arctic Silver paint.

And each car touts its place in the 700 run with a plaque on the glovebox.

Volt Birth Watch 74: $10k for a New Battery

The Volt PR drip-feed continues. The Hail Mary’s Design Director hung with his homies in Traverse City (rated E for everyone), then jumped into GM’s FastLane to release some teaser pics and say absolutely nothing (”The Chevrolet Volt’s exterior design is an attractive balance between aerodynamic performance and styling.”) The Volt’s Chief Engineer was more forthcoming– and forthright. Andrew Farrah tells the AP [via Autonet] that “GM workers are testing batteries to make sure they last at least 10 years or 150,000 miles. It would cost more than $10,000 to replace them.” The batteries or the engineers? Anyway, “The Volt also is going through the same design issues as a new car powered by a conventional engine, Farah said. ‘The program has all of those same things built in. We’re just doing them faster because we have to.’” How reassuring is that?

GM’s Motorama Memories

Sometimes technology isn’t a blessing. Not only did video kill the radio star, but also General Motor’s travailing showcase know as Motorama.

Motorama used to travel all around the U.S. in a caravan of specially built “Parade of Progress” busses, all used to showcase GM’s new cars and new innovations. But once television was in every household, the Motorama changed. It was still a grand spectacle, but the Motorama no longer came to your doorstep. By the mid-50s Motorama would only set up in the major cities but could be broadcast to homes nationwide through TV. The last one was held in 1961.

Enjoy as GM’s Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn reminisces about the Motorama and the dream cars of GM’s past before they are showcased next week at Pebble Beach (including the Chevrolet Biscayne.)

10 reasons why auto sales are dropping (besides the economy and fuel prices)

Think of it as the Carsumer Price Index; new car sales are under pressure from other factors besides fuel prices and economic slowdowns, much like the Consumer Price Index strips out the price of fuel and food and then makes a proclamation about the economy. At least that’s the theory that Pinny Cohen posits. Who’s Pinny Cohen? As far as we know, he’s an average joe with an internet rostrum and a budding web entrepreneurship who makes some salient points. He’s also an Autoblog reader and he’s got something to say, so we thought we’d share.

If it’s not $4/gallon gasoline or economic stagnation that’s putting the brakes on car sales, what else could it be? Cohen posits that the better construction of cars these days, a glut of leases that have led to a tsunami of used cars, and online shopping and telecommuting keeping people home are all contributing factors, says Pinny. Something’s got to give for consumers, and new car sales seem to be the weakest link. Every automaker will eventually accept these facts, but the question is whether some will have to close up shop in order to realize that it’s a brand new day of decreased production. Check the link to read Cohen’s thoughts and let us know if you agree or think of more reasons why besides the crappy economy and high gas prices that new vehicle sales are down.
