Trident Iceni ‘nears production’

Norfolk-based Trident has been developing its Iceni sports car for some years - we drove a prototype Icini back in 2001 - but it now ‘nears production’, according to a statement today.

The rear-wheel-drive Iceni, originally fitted with a GM petrol V6, now has a 6.6-litre diesel V8 capable of running on biodiesel. This delivers 550bhp at 950lb-ft of torque, and Trident promises more than 200mph and 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds.

A zoom zoom sneak peek

The new Mazda3 design has been leaked.

Normally when top-leaked secret information glides across the carsGuide desk, it is in the form of camouflaged photos.

But what was thought to be renderings of the next-generation Mazda3 accidently put on the web by a Japanese toy maker are believed to be real images owned by Mazda.

However, if that’s the case, Mazda Australia spokesman Glenn Butler is not spilling the beans.

“The sheer interest in the number of speculative renderings that have surfaced recently are a clear indication of the keen interest consumers have in next-generation versions of Australia’s third best-selling passenger car,” he says.

Nor would Butler be drawn on whether Mazda owned the images.

The newest Mazda is not officially due to go on sale here until mid-next year.

It is expected to be displayed at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

As the white renderings show, the newcomer looks more evolutionary than revolutionary.

The hatch’s design follows the successful contemporary theme of the current car. However, some of the new curves clearly follow the latest Mazda6, particularly the flared front wheel-arches and eyebrow headlight design.

The new “family” front end is even expected to grace the facelifted MX-5 next year, according to carsGuide’s Japan correspondent Peter Lyons. The new Mazda3 will ride on the next-generation global Ford Focus C1 platform and is expected to be slightly longer and wider than the current model.

The entry model is expected to retain the 2.0-litre four-cylinder, but might be massaged for more power.

The 2.3-litre four-cylinder in the SP23 is tipped to get a lift in displacement up to 2.5-litres, like the Mazda6, with a corresponding increase in power by about 20kW.

Test prototypes have revealed the four cylinder will get a single exhaust. The high-power model is expected to get dual exhausts.

It also remains possible that Mazda could use direct injection on both engines. Buyers can also expect a turbodiesel in the range.

The Mazda3 has been one of Mazda’s most successful cars.

Globally, one out of every three Mazdas sold is a Mazda3. It also represents about 40 per cent of Mazda Australia’s volume.

Last year Mazda sold more than 34,000 Mazda3s and this year has already sold more than 20,000, putting it on track for its best sales year since going on sale in 2004.

Volt Birth Watch 77: That Cd Won’t Play

GM Car Czar Bob Lutz dropped quite the load of “Between the Lines” fodder (Justin’s working on it) in his interview with Charlie Rose. One real jaw-dropper: Lutz’s comment that the Volt has a Cd (coefficient of drag) of “between .28 and .29”. Folks, that is seriously bad. Was GM running the wind tunnel fan backwards, or did they put the model in upside down? My 1985 Mercedes 300E had a Cd of .28. As did a 1995 Mitsubishi Diamante. The current Prius scores a .26, and next year’s model will undoubtedly improve on that. Lutz specifically said some months ago that the Volt would have better aerodynamics than the Prius. Oh well. Meanwhile, a whole raft of current sedans have a better Cd: Lexus LS430: .26; Hyundai Genesis: .27; Camry hybrid: .27; Mercedes W203: .27; the old B5 Passat: .27. Even the Saab 9-3 ties/beats the Volt with a .28. Keep in mind, that for an EV, aerodynamics plays a much more crucial role in highway range than for a conventional car. That’s why GM’s EV-1 had a spectacularly low Cd of .19. Nothing like progress in the span of fifteen years.

Monterey 2008: Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Click above for a high-res gallery.

By the time Sunday rolls around during Monterey Week, we’re pretty exhausted. Too many cars and so little time. Still, that doesn’t stop us from getting to the 18th fairway before the sun comes up to see the cars drive onto the grass. Duesenbergs, Bentleys, Cadillacs, Ferraris, Bugattis, and more come rolling into the show, causing us to scurry back and forth to photograph as many of them as possible. There was so much to look at this year — the Lamborghinis, Lancias, V16 Cadillacs, 250 GT California Spyders, GM’s Motorama, and Leno’s tank car — before we knew it, the Best of Show had been crowned and the day was over. We can’t go through all of the class winners and special awards, but if you are interested, you can view them on the Pebble Beach Concours web site. We’ve put together a comprehensive gallery of high resolution photos for you, many with captions in case you aren’t familiar with the cars. Enjoy!

Mercedes Gullwing SLC: the desert spy photos

Mercedes’ Gullwing SLC is fast becoming the automotive equivalent of Paris Hilton or Kate Moss: photographed at every street corner by the world’s paparazzi. Our latest scoop photos of the Merc Gullwing come straight from the canyons and deserts of Nevada and California.

Earlier this month, we caught the Gullwing with its eponymous doors flipped open for the first time, confirming the link back to the 1950s original, and spy photographers have allegedly been tipped off about the prototypes’ whereabouts to help drum up publicity for this new addition to the Merc range.

It’s Gullwing scoop overload! Time for a quick recap…

We’re still none the wiser about the new Merc supercar’s real name, but it’s been dubbed alternately Gullwing (in honour of those doors) and SLC (thanks to Stuttgartspeak… SL CoupĂ©, anyone?).

In a nutshell, the newcomer will perch at the top of the Mercedes family tree – effectively replacing the Merc-McLaren SLR, although it’ll cost just a third of that composite-bodied supercar.

We’ll see the new coupe in concept guise in 2009, ahead of a full debut at the 2010 Geneva motor show. A cloth-topped roadster is expected in 2011, although quite how those roof-hinged gullwing doors will be squared with a canvas roof is anybody’s guess…
