Dig that cool eco-car, man

Hemp? That’s a cannabis-related organic material that hippies harvestĀ for clothes and carpets isn’t it? Yes, maybe it is those things. ButĀ it’s a strong renewable material andĀ it can also have application in cars. Lotus has produced an ‘Eco-Elise’ concept whichĀ incorporates the use of hemp. Seat fabrics you’re probably already thinking - and maybe the carpets perhaps. Yes on the seats but Lotus has employed another renewableĀ crop for the carpet. It’s an interesting exercise and points to some future possibilities with organic materials.

And get this;Ā hemp has been used as the primary constituent material in some of the car’s composite body panels - such as the hardtop roof and spoiler. Far out, as Fat Freddy might have said. A whole new take on that ‘new car smell’.

Okay, where have I read about the Eco-Elise - in the latestĀ issue of proActive, that’s where. It is now available for free download (if you haven’t already, you just have to register - 30 secs topsĀ - to read it).

In the latest edition there is also an interview I did with Victor Muller, main man at Spyker Cars. He’s an interesting fellow, to be sure. His involvement in FormulaĀ One must have beenĀ fun, if ultimately traumatic - a real rollercoaster.Ā Was itĀ Eddie Jordan who once said something like this: how do you make a smallĀ fortune in F1? Answer: start off with a bigĀ fortune.

If you aren’t registered for the alert email, you can download the latest proActive as a pdf by following the link below.Ā

9 Ways Gen Y Provides Leadership, and Productivity to Business while eliminating difficult behavior

Via
American Chronicle

Are you ready to turn your thinking from Generation Y as difficult people to great corporate citizens? Generation X and the Baby Boomers have not had this kind of press because they remained within a “norm” of others expectations. Gen Y do not consider themselves to be difficult or toxic people. So you may want to stop making fun of them!

The good news is that Generation Y learned the importance of balancing work and life from watching their overworked parents. So here are some ideas of what they bring to an overworked, entitlement driven work force.

1. Hold Only Productive Meetings

Email will be the medium for information that just needs to be shared. Thirty minute meetings will pull everyone to the same page while motivating them to get the work done. They bring to the table efficiency, focus and definitive expected outcomes.

    Great Commercials–1984 GTI

In 1964, when California-style surf rock songs about hot cars were at their peak in popularity, Ronny & the Daytonas released “G.T.O.“, a lively ode to the Pontiac musclecar that became a #1 hit. Twenty years later, Volkswagen “translated” the song into German for a spot advertising the Mk. I GTI:

That’s about as much good clean fun as you can have in thirty seconds, and it tells you all you need to know about the GTI: it’s meant to be played with.

The dramatically-lit synchronized hoonery–door-handle-to-door-handle speed runs, drifting around racetrack corners, spectacular leaps over the crest of a hill–is perfectly matched to the California surf-rock soundtrack. California surf-rock car songs are silly to begin with (unless you have severe Car Lust, in which case car songs are autobiographical, as it were)–a California surf-rock car song with German lyrics takes “silly” to a whole new level. The comic capper is the lawyerly disclaimer (”Local speed laws must be
obeyed. Do not attempt these maneuvers.”) prominently superimposed over
all this reckless abandon. No irony there, no-siree Bob, none whatsoever.

Ever since I first saw this commercial in 1984, that surf-rock song has piqued my curiosity.Ā  It’s obviously not a direct translation of the original Ronny & the Daytonas lyrics, which are about a V-8 musclecar (”Three dueces and a four-speed/And a three-eighty-nine.”), not a 4-cylinder hot hatchback.

Despite the best efforts of one of my finer teachers, Herr Professor Eugene Weibel, my limited proficiency with high-school German did not survive long past my high school graduation,. This made figuring out the lyrics kind of tough for me. I remembered that kleine is German for “little”–so I knew that the first line is “little GTI” (in place of “little GTO”). I also remembered enough to recognize that the letters “G-T-I” were being deliberately mis-pronounced to make them recognizable to English speakers: Germans would say “gay-tay-eeh instead of “gee-tee-eye.”

However, we here at Car Lust are nothing if not obsessive determined. With the gracious help of some friends who are better at the language than I ever was (including an actual German) and a YouTube commenter, I can give you a workable translation of the song (at least those lines that aren’t buried under the voiceover).Ā

    • The first three lines are:Ā  “Little GTI/You’re so much fun/I love to drive you.”
    • According to the YouTube commenter, the fourth line (where the voiceover comes in) translates as “To the max” and the lines under the voiceover are “Listen how he starts/Put in the key.” My German-speaking friends can’t quite make this part out, but I’m pretty sure I hear the German noun Schlüssel, which means “key,” so I’m going with it.
    • At the end, after the pitchman says “Introducing the 1984 . . . ” the singers come in with “Ready to start/How it hums/How it zooms/GTI”

All this linguistics has me in the mood for some fuel-injected hoonery of my own. My GTI is sitting in the driveway, waiting patiently. I think I’ll go turn it on, wind it up, blow it out, GTI.

    Keep Your Subaru Seattle!

    Ā Loading …

Some of the recent trends we have seen as of late suggest it really makes a lot of sense to consider keeping your Subaru around.

Unless you replace your Subaru with another model that gets significantly better fuel economy you just aren’t getting much for your money right now.

Oil and gas prices are starting to come down but to what levels?

The reality is we will most likely be dealing with prices north of three dollars from now on. The trend for the last decade is up a bunch and down a little setting a ā€œhigherā€ lower price.

Living in Seattle and the surrounding area it’s pretty obvious that mass transit isn’t ever really going to happen. We are going to be stuck with are cars as our primary method of transportation for quite some time.

Taking care of what you own for a few more years while vehicle manufactures come to market with a different breed of vehicle is maybe a great way to go right now.

Putting a little into your Subaru right now and waiting for the 2011 and 2012 models to come out should offer you a lot more choices in regards to hybrids and alternative fuels, and this is part of what we need to do to decrease our oil consumption while forcing the car makers to build these cars.

The only time Vehicle manufactures really offer better cars is when they have trouble selling what they are already making.

In Seattle and the greater Puget Sound region the only way we will use less oil is to increase our cars economy. The only way this will happen is if we continue to demand better choices in regards to fuel efficiency and alternative fuels. Every time we make the choice to keep our current car longer, the more realistic are chances of decreasing our dependency on foreign oil becomes.

Any time we can replace a car getting 20 mpg with one that gets 40 we are also doing the environment a lot of good as well.

TV: Fantasies Unearthed in Living Color in Chasing Classic Cars Reality Series

PORTLAND, Connecticut — Wayne Carini has been up close and personal with the famous: he has done work on David Letterman’s cars and has been quoted in The New York Times. Now he will grab a little TV fame of his own as the host of Chasing Classic Cars, a new reality-TV series based around his F40 Motorsports shop here. The series will premiere on HD Theater in the fall.

Carini does what generations of car lovers have done, or daydreamed of doing: he hunts for forgotten treasures in barns — including a Bugatti located in a barn bearing 1962 New York state plates, to which he quips, “That’ll give you a tingly feeling all over, huh?” Then the series will follow the process of restoring the finds and putting them on the auction block. Each episode lasts 30 minutes.

HD Theater, affiliated with the Discovery Channel, is available from some cable providers and via Dish Network and DirecTV satellite services. The full schedule of programs will be available soon.

What this means to you: In the grand new tradition of reality TV, here’s a “Project Driveway” to rival Project Runway. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent

All-New 2009 TL Redefines Performance with the Most Powerful Engine in Acura History and Super Handling All-Wheel Driveā„¢

    Press Releases

    PrintFriendly Format

    08.19.08
All-New 2009 TL Redefines Performance with the Most Powerful Engine in Acura History and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™
With dramatic new styling, precise handling and a host of advanced technology and safety features, the fourth-generation TL is Acura’s performance leader

Since inception, the Acura TL performance luxury sedan has set lofty standards for styling, performance, comfort and technology. Available for 2009 in two distinctly different models, TL and TL SH-AWDĀ®, the all-new fourth-generation Acura TL dramatically expands the model’s capabilities and appeal with evocative style, a choice of two VTECĀ® powertrains (including a new 305-horsepower V-6) and the TL’s first-ever application of Super Handling All-Wheel Driveā„¢ (SH-AWDĀ®).

Boasting larger dimensions, optimized suspension, a new Sequential SportShift transmission, plus an available Technology Package featuring a comprehensive array of navigation and communication aids, the 2009 TL offers more appeal than ever before. Along with an available Acura/ELS SurroundĀ® premium 10-speaker surround sound system and an all-new AcuraLinkĀ® weather feature, the new TL is by far the most technologically advanced sedan in Acura’s history.

The combination of dramatic new styling, exhilarating performance and an extensive array of electronics (including AcuraLinkĀ® real-time traffic and AcuraLinkĀ® weather with Doppler-style radar mapping) ensures the 2009 Acura TL will appeal to a sophisticated, technology-savvy audience.

    Powertrain
A choice of two different all-aluminum VTECĀ® engines enables the new 2009 TL to satisfy a wide range of customers. Standard is a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 280 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque that sends power to the front wheels through Acura’s sophisticated Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel- mounted paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Though powerful, the new engine is also fuel efficient, with projected EPA fuel economy ratings* of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The engine is targeted to meet California’s tough CARB LEV II ULEV emissions certification standards, thanks to features including a Drive-by-Wireā„¢ throttle system, Computer-Controlled Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) and Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTECĀ®) for the intake valves.

Serious performance-sedan devotees will choose the TL SH-AWDĀ® to make winding roads their own. Its all-new 3.7-liter V-6 engine produces 305 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque courtesy of greater displacement and additional high-performance features like Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTECĀ®) on both the intake and exhaust valves, and a special high-flow dual exhaust system. With projected EPA fuel economy ratings* of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, the 3.7L is also targeted to meet California’s stringent CARB LEV II ULEV emissions certification. The piĆØce de rĆ©sistance on the TL SH-AWDĀ® is the Super Handling All-Wheel Driveā„¢ system, now available on the TL for the first time.

During spirited cornering, SH-AWDĀ® seamlessly distributes more torque to the outside rear wheel to create a “yaw moment” to help the TL turn in more quickly and precisely - while also continuously apportioning drivetrain torque front to rear and left to right. The result is a remarkably balanced and precise all-wheel-drive performance sedan that excels year-round, not just during inclement weather.

Acura TL’s performance achievements extend to durability, reliability and refinement as well. Both engines feature electronically controlled engine mounts to reduce engine noise, vibration and harshness (NVH); quiet and efficient Electric Power Steering (EPS) and maintenance-free serpentine accessory belt also boost operating refinement. A standard Maintenance Minderā„¢ system and up to a 100,000-mile tune-up interval offer further time and cost savings for the TL owner.

The standard transmission on the 2009 TL and TL SH-AWDĀ® is a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic featuring F1Ā®-style steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Merging the convenience of an automatic with the enjoyment of SportShift manual gear selection, the transmission also features an overdriven top gear for maximum fuel efficiency on the highway. In fact, the Acura transmission has the widest gear-ratio spread of any 5-speed transmission in its class, providing strong acceleration in lower gears and relaxed, fuel-efficient highway cruising.

    Body/Chassis
Major improvements in structural engineering for the unit-body further define the 2009 TL. The list of substantial changes begins with the relocation of frame rails inside (rather than underneath) the vehicle’s floor pan, resulting in a nearly flat body underside. Benefits of this design include improved crash safety, a significant reduction in interior noise levels, and reduced aerodynamic drag that helps enhance fuel economy. Another significant improvement is the increased use of high-strength steel, which simultaneously improves the unit-body’s overall strength while helping to reduce weight. For additional weight savings, aluminum is used for the hood, the front suspension subframe and rear suspension knuckles.

Ride quality and passenger comfort benefit from the 2009 TL’s larger exterior dimensions. Featuring 6.0 inches greater exterior length, 1.8 inches more overall width and a modest 0.5-inch increase in overall height, the TL is noticeably larger than its predecessor.

The larger body size directly contributes to greater interior roominess; it also allows a 1.4-inch longer wheelbase to improve ride quality and a significantly wider track (1.1 inches wider in front, 1.8 inches wider in the rear) helps generate even more tenacious cornering power. The TL employs a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a multi-link independent system in back.

Further improving ride quality and road-holding are new dual-stage “blow off” style hydraulic suspension dampers, new hydro-compliant bushings (used to mount the transmission and key suspension components) and a new “smart” engine mount design. On the Super Handling All-Wheel Driveā„¢ (SH-AWDĀ®) model, more performance-minded suspension and brake tuning, larger wheels/tires, racing-inspired front brake cooling ducts, and specially-tuned Electric Power Steering (EPS) take the enthusiast’s driving experience to an even higher level.

    Exterior/Interior
An evocative and powerful exterior body design dramatically advances the TL’s image as a performance luxury sedan. Designed by Acura in Southern California, the TL utilizes an array of styling techniques to express motion - and emotion - even when the car is at rest. Featuring Acura’s new signature front grille, body sides defined by strong character lines, sweeping C-pillars and new LED taillights, the 2009 TL is simultaneously Acura and yet wholly unique. Plentiful use of luxury and performance features add visual appeal while adding to the TL’s vigorous statement - including bright HID projector-beam front headlights, pronounced wheel arches, a standard power moonroof and genuine stainless-steel body trim.

Wheels and tires are as expressive as the exterior styling. Standard on the 2009 TL are 17-inch aluminum wheels with P245/50R17 all-season Bridgestone Turanza or available Michelin Pilot tires for confident year-round performance. The TL SH-AWDĀ® comes with 18-inch aluminum wheels with lower-profile P245/45R18 Michelin Pilot tires for more agile handling. Finally, the TL SH-AWDĀ® offers available 19-inch aluminum wheels with aggressive P245/40ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 summer tires for the ultimate TL performance experience.

In keeping with its mission as a driver’s car, the 2009 TL interior features a new “dual personal” layout that provides both the driver and front passenger with their own personal space. Thanks to its larger exterior dimensions, the new TL has 1.3 inches more rear legroom and 0.5-inch of added rear shoulder room compared to the previous generation TL.

Acura’s commitment to luxury and technology becomes apparent from the first moment the driver’s door is opened. With sweeping shapes, generous use of premium materials and passionate attention to detail, the TL rewards the discriminating eye. The design and execution of the interior is an artful combination of leather surfaces, accented by metallic and wood-pattern trim. An impressive array of premium standard features includes a power moonroof, dual-zone adaptive climate control, 10-way adjustable (8-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support) driver seat, 8-way adjustable power front passenger seat, and steering-wheel-mounted F1Ā®-style paddle shifters for the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission. An 8-speaker, 276-watt audio system that includes a 6-disc CD changer, AM/FM radio, XMĀ® Satellite Radio, BluetoothĀ® Audio, USB port and AUX jack connectivity, and HandsFreeLinkĀ® wireless telephone interface are standard.

Available on both the TL and TL SH-AWDĀ® is a Technology Package that includes the most comprehensive array of advanced electronic features ever offered by Acura. The Technology Package includes the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognitionā„¢, AcuraLinkĀ® real-time traffic, AcuraLinkĀ® weather with Doppler-style radar mapping, an Acura/ELS SurroundĀ® premium audio system and Keyless Access System with pushbutton ignition. The included Navigation System features a new 8-inch full VGA high-resolution color display for improved visibility.

Audiophiles with appreciate the new Acura/ELS SurroundĀ® 10-speaker, 440-watt premium sound system with DVD-Audio, CD, DTSā„¢, AM/FM radio, XMĀ® Satellite Radio and 2,500-song** hard disk drive (HDD) media storage. An intuitive interface dial as well as sophisticated voice recognition capability simplifies control of this impressive technology. Premium Milano leather seating surfaces included in the Technology Package further enhances comfort and visual appeal.

    Safety
Advanced Compatibility Engineeringā„¢ (ACEā„¢) represents a major advance in structural engineering for the 2009 TL. In simple terms, ACEā„¢ better dissipates crash energy in a severe frontal collision through the use of dedicated load-bearing frame structures that efficiently distribute crash energy through the body structure-while also helping to preserve the integrity of the passenger compartment. Acura first introduced ACEā„¢ to the Acura line for the 2005 model year and its inclusion in the 2009 TL means that every vehicle in the Acura model range now has this advanced safety engineering.

Six airbags and a new active head restraint system for the driver and front passenger headrests top the long list of passive safety features built into the new TL. The airbag array includes dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, new dual-chamber front seat side airbags with front passenger seat Occupant Position Detection System, along with side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions. Additional passive-safety features include 3-point seatbelts and head restraints for all seating positions, driver and front passenger seatbelt load-limiters with an automatic tensioning system and a Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system that permits quick, secure attachment of up to two child seats in the rear seating area.

The new TL includes sophisticated active safety features including powerful 4-wheel disc brakes (with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), all-season tires and an available SH-AWDĀ® system. Adding to the list of standard exterior safety features are daytime running lights (DRL) along with 2.5-mph front and rear bumpers.

The 2009 Acura TL is designed to meet the latest crash-safety regulations, including the new FMVSS214 side crash standards (which the TL meets three years early) and the new FMVSS301 rear crash standards. Internal testing indicates that the 2009 TL should achieve the highest ratings in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)*** and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests.

The 2009 Acura TL is assembled in Marysville, Ohio and is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 mile powertrain limited warranty. Additional benefits of ownership include Acura Total Luxury Care (TLC), which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service and trip routing.

    Acura
Acura offers a full line of technologically advanced performance luxury vehicles through a network of 270 dealers within the United States. The 2009 Acura lineup features five distinctive models including the RL luxury performance sedan, the TL performance luxury sedan, the TSX sports sedan, the turbocharged RDX luxury crossover SUV and the award-winning MDX luxury sport utility vehicle.

Are people deserting the suburbs to escape high fuel prices?

A new report by the Federal Government’s department of transport predicts that people will begin to desert the outer suburbs of Australia’s main cities if fuel prices continue to climb.

The report says residents will move to the inner city and begin taking public transport to escape lengthy, expensive commutes to work.

It claims that petrol price hikes have already prompted people to use their cars less and that the recent petrol price spike has caused an 8.2 per cent drop in fuel use.

The authors of the report say those who do keep driving will switch to diesel or hybrid cars, while four-wheel-drive sales will eventually fall.

It’s an interesting theory, but there seems to be very little evidence of people shying away from four-wheel-drives at the moment.

Sales of 4WDs are up by 10 per cent in the first seven months of this year. In fact, they are growing at twice the rate of light car sales and almost three times the rate of small cars.

And the bigger the 4WDs, the more popular they seem at the moment. While sales of compact offroaders are up by just 3 per cent, medium 4WD sales are up 17 per cent and large 4WDs are up 30 per cent.

One of the Government’s claims that is backed up by sales, however, is the continuing shift to diesel-powered vehicles. Sales are up by close to 30 per cent this year, following strong growth in 2006 and 2007 (although diesel passenger cars still make up a fraction of sales). The high price of diesel doesn’t seem to have put the brakes on oil-burner sales just yet.

What do you think? Is this report just out-of-touch bureaucrats crystal-ball gazing or does your personal experience back up their analysis?

Have you thought of moving closer to the city – or even to a less crowded city – to escape a hefty fuel bill and a long commute?

Alternatively, are you using your car less? Perhaps you’ve switched to the train or the bus for the weekday commute, or bought a smaller car?

Finally, have you made the switch to diesel or hybrid to cut the cost of your weekly commute?
