1966 and all that

1966 and all that

5th September 2008 10:54

Okay, August new car sales in Britain were bad. Very bad. And they should give people like the Chancellor Alistair ‘we’re doomed’ Darling and the grandees on the Bank of England’s interest rate review committee something to chew on.

And someone at the SMMT dug out an interesting stat: August sales this year were the lowest since 1966. What? How bad is that? It’s certainly an irresistable stat - especially with the resonance that particular year has for many in England - and I can’t blame anyone for wanting to use it. We’re instantly transported back to Bobby Moore holding the Jules Rimet aloft, Swinging London in full swing and Twiggy in a Mini (skirt and car). The clear implication is that the national economy and the car market must really be in frighteningly rapid reverse.

Maybe Mr Darling is on the button with his ’sixty years’ remark after all (no, he’s not - and even if he was, he was ridiculously naive to say it publicly).

But just think of all those years since 1966 when the August car sales total was higher than August 2008. Were car sales higher even in the dark times of the oil shock 1970s, the ‘gisajob’ urban riot-strewn early 1980s or the sterling-ERM fiasco early 1990s, when the economic gloom was surely much worse than now - wasn’t it…?

Hang on a minute.

To take a year at random from the 1970s, new car sales in Britain in 1976 (now that was a summer) were 1.285m units and the SMMT forecast for this year is still at a very much higher 2.26m units.

How could August 1976 sales be higher than 2008’s in a very much smaller annual market? Answer: the distortion to monthly sales caused by the ‘year identifier’ in the new car registration plate.

It used to be a consecutive running letter at the end of the registration number and then it went to the beginning, but it was a very big thing in the UK to have the cache of the new year’s letter on your brand spanking new car’s plate and that came out every August.

In fact, over a fifth of annual new car sales happened in August. It was a huge marketing thing, but many in the industry said it was unhelpful and that they would prefer sales spread out a little more evenly over the year. In response, the registration number conventions were changed at the beginning of this decade (and now there are smaller peaks in March and September, but let’s not get into that).

But the bumper August sales we used to get will never be repeated and August sales now are a lot lower than they used to be, even in the good years.

So, the stat is definitely an eye-catcher and I can see the 1966 thing being picked up in the national newspapers here today. But it’s not quite as bad as it sounds because of that distortion which made Augusts bigger than they should have been in the intervening years.

A 2m unit annual car market in the UK was first reached in 1987. A market this year of 2.26m would still be pretty respectable by historical standards. In 1991 - the last big economic wobble in this country - we had a car market of 1.6m units. We’re still some way off that nadir.

Ah, the joy of statistics.

UK: Car market down 19% in August

Your Comments

As ever, there are lies, damn lies … and statistics. As the population also becomes more numerous over time, should not every vehicle sales figure be related to the number of drivers at the time (ie the number of potential vehicle customers) to provide a clearer picture of what’s really going on ?
And to all the Statisticians who understand this stuff and can explain to me in far greater depth, please feel free NOT to do so ….!

Manufacturing enterprises’ multiple tactics to survive

Via
chinadaily.com

By Xu Shenglan

The producer price index (PPI) for China’s industrial products rose 10.0 percent year on year in July, while that of the mining industries surged 34 percent year-on-year, according to China Securities Journal.

The data shows that China’s manufacturing industry is facing the pressure of increasing costs.

Raising the price of new orders is the first choice for many firms, and then improving labor productivity. According to Wanxiang Qianchao Co Ltd, its working efficiency has been raised to one person for four machines instead of one-for-two, and the firm’s gross profit will not decline next year.

Make Sure Your College Student’s Subaru Is Ready For The School Year

     Loading …

Get your college student ready for school by making sure their Subaru or any other car they drive is ready for fall and the start of the new school year.

Having your son or daughter call from a few states away or just on the other side of Washington State with a broken down car can really be a bummer. Where do you take the car? Does the shop know very much about Subaru’s? Is there any value having to have panic repairs?

The answer to the last question is most definitely no.

All Wheel Drive Auto can perform a thorough inspection and make sure their car will make it through this year’s College year. So they can focus on what they are there for.

A good inspection would include looking at the belts, hoses, brakes, lights, tires, suspension and steering.

Maintenance is always cheaper than repairs, especially ones made during a panic after something has quit working on the car.

Knight Rider and My Own Worst Enemy Hit Internet Before TV

BURBANK, California — In order to build buzz before the network television premiere of the new Knight Rider, the first episode of the series will premiere a week earlier on NBC.com and Hulu.com. While Knight Rider is scheduled to show up on NBC TV on Wednesday, September 24, it will actually be on the Internet starting on September 17.

Of course, since Knight Rider will be a nearly all-Ford show, Chevy enthusiasts may want something more to their taste. Camaro (and Traverse) nuts may want to aim their browsers at NBC.com or Hulu.com on October 14 to catch the premiere episode of My Own Worst Enemy a full week before it shows up on NBC TV.

So there’s no reason to bother with television at all any more.

What this means to you: Even before the shows themselves arrive on TV, you’ll be able to tell whether Ford or GM is getting the biggest bang for its product placement bucks. — John Pearley Huffman, Correspondent

Honda CR-V Delivers Refined and Stylish Approach to Entry-SUV Segment

The Honda CR-V is designed to deliver an ideal balance of style, functionality
and features in a versatile and accommodating 5-passenger crossover SUV package.

Three distinct trim levels (LX, EX and EX-L) provide unique styling cues and
feature content that accommodate shoppers seeking everything from basic function
to premium appointments - yet all come equipped with the same high level of
safety equipment. The 2009 CR-V achieves the highest five-star crash safety
rating by the federal government for both frontal and side impacts1
, the highest rating possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
rates the CR-V as a “Top Safety Pick - 2008.”

“The right balance of style, refinement and performance is helping the Honda
CR-V earn a top spot in the SUV sales charts,” said Dick Colliver, executive
vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Upscale styling, a spacious
interior and sedan-like handling appeal to shoppers looking for a crossover
    sport utility vehicle.”

The CR-V highlights the company’s ongoing emphasis on safety by implementing
features that go beyond conventional industry standards with innovations that
include the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure,
a pedestrian safety design and standard Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®),
also known as electronic stability control. Additional standard safety equipment
includes side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front side airbags with
a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); active front seat
head restraints; VSA; an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake
Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

A highly rigid body and fully independent suspension result in a quiet cabin
and smooth, agile handling performance. The 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine
and standard 5-speed automatic transmission provide an excellent balance of
    power (166-horsepower) and fuel economy (EPA-rated 20/27 city/highway mpg2
    , 2WD).

A dynamic forward cabin blends the familiar CR-V identity into a sculpted lower
body with a rugged appearance. A two-tier grille and a side profile with an
arched window shape and chrome trim accent the CR-V’s distinctive and upscale
    presence.

The CR-V’s unit-body construction features extensive use of high-strength steel
to provide rigidity. Comprised of a front MacPherson strut layout and a rear
multi-link suspension, the high-rigidity body and independent suspension offer
an engaging driving experience rare for this class of vehicle. State-of-the
art noise absorption materials help to reduce engine and road noise for an ultra-quiet
    cabin.

The inside of the CR-V blends the company’s renowned ergonomics and innovative
storage integration with modern and efficient styling. Abundant standard and
available features like a Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System3
with voice recognition and a rear view camera accentuate the attention to premium
details. A retractable center tray table on LX and EX models and a center console
with storage on EX-L provide two beverage holders, and EX and above models also
contain an additional 12-volt power outlet and house the auxiliary audio input
    jack.

Models outfitted with a leather interior (CR-V EX-L) come equipped with a dual-zone
automatic climate control system and a power driver’s seat with eight-way adjustment
and power lumbar support. Additionally, all CR-V EX-L models are equipped with
the premium audio system. On the CR-V EX and EX-L, a dual-deck cargo shelf provides
additional storage versatility in the cargo area, while providing enough clearance
underneath for grocery bags or items such as a folded stroller.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System3 with voice recognition
and rearview camera, available on the CR-V EX-L, features a 6.5-inch motorized
display that opens and closes for access to an internal single-disc CD player
and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMAÂŽ files from CompactFlashÂŽ
cards. The navigation system contains more than 7 million points of interest
and can control the audio system. The voice recognition is capable of recognizing
and entering numbers, street names and cities.

The CR-V LX and EX audio systems provide 160 watts of power. Auxiliary audio
input jacks are standard equipment on all trim levels, allowing for portable
music device playback through the audio system. All audio systems feature MP3/WMA
CD playback capability and Speed-sensitive Volume Control (SVC) that automatically
adjusts the volume based on vehicle speed. The CR-V LX has a four-speaker audio
system with a single-disc CD player. The CR-V EX adds two speakers (tweeters)
and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. The CR-V EX-L equipped audio system increases
power output to 270 watts and delivers sound through seven speakers, including
a subwoofer. XMÂŽ Satellite Radio4 is standard on the CR-V EX-L.

Powered by a 2.4-liter, DOHC, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that produces
166 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 161 lb-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm, the CR-V offers
refined and responsive performance with good fuel economy2 and low
emissions (ULEV-2). The Drive-by-Wire (DBW) throttle control works closely with
the transmission for extremely smooth shift points and intuitive gear holding
on hilly roads. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment.

The available, fully-automatic Real Time 4WD system enhances the CR-V’s all-weather
capabilities when driving in rain, snow and dirt roads - without the significant
weight, fuel economy and handling performance drawbacks of a conventional four-wheel-drive
    system.

Three new colors have been introduced for the 2009 model year: Crystal Black
Pearl, Alabaster Silver Metallic and Urban Titanium Metallic.

The CR-V is a global product for Honda sold in 160 countries throughout North
America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa - the most of any Honda automotive
product. Worldwide, the CR-V is assembled in seven countries at eight factories,
including the Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., East Liberty Auto Plant
    in Ohio.

Does Australia need an automotive manufacturing sector?

Australia’s car makers have copped a lot of flack lately. They’re seen as recipients of corporate welfare with one pundit saying that, despite receiving government hand-outs totalling $370 million, the three remaining local manufacturers still managed to rack up losses of close to half a billion dollars.

The same pundit, David Uren of the Australian newspaper, says that the automotive sector receives 55 per cent of all government support for the manufacturing sector, despite employing only 2.5 per cent of the sector’s workforce.

Uren quotes analyst Raghu Rajakumar, from research firm IBIS World as saying that Australia is unable to compete at either end of the market – the low cost Asian manufacturers at the bottom, and the high value-add European manufacturers at the top of the market.

“There is a lot of emotional attachment,” says Rajakumar, “but it is hard to say that it is a viable industry in the long term.”

Uren and Rajakumar’s comments were made just days before Holden announced a new export deal, selling its long-wheelbase Caprice model to Korea badged as the Daewoo Veritas (Veritas means truth in Latin).

According to Holden boss Mark Reuss, the company will sell 50 per cent of its output overseas during the next year.

Holden and Toyota are responsible for around $4 billion worth of exports between them. Last year Toyota exported 85,500 Camrys, making it Australia’s most successful automotive exporter.

Holden also did well, selling 36,534 cars during the 2007 calendar year. That number will be higher this year following the Korean export deal, as well as the deal that will see the Commodore ute exported to the United States as a Pontiac.

I think that Australia needs a viable automotive sector, and exports are obviously part of that. The sector is responsible for delivering research and development – in the case of Ford and Holden – back to their parent companies. Both are centres of engineering excellence, and both directly and indirectly support a lot of Australian – and overseas workers.

Do you think that we need to have an automotive sector in Australia? Or should we let our car makers go the way that much of our clothing, footwear and textile industries have gone? Can Ford, Holden and Toyota compete from such a small base? And do they have the right products at the right time? Have your say.
