UK: Vigilantes Cost Speed Camera Operators $800,000

A total of 199 attacks on speed cameras in the UK last year cost operators over £500k (US $800k) in repair cost. The figures, reported by the Mid Sussex Times in response to a freedom of information request, do not include the far more substantial amount of revenue lost before replacement devices could be put in place to resume ticketing. Most recently, a pair of cameras were destroyed in Cambridgeshire on October 25 at around 7pm. One of the devices issued tickets on the A605 Elton bypass while a second was stationed near Peterborough. This represents the third time the A605 camera has been set on fire in the past six months. In the past fiscal year, Cambridgeshire spent £93k (US $150k) repairing cameras. including replacing an automated ticketing machine at Stow-cum-Quy, after an April 14 attack. The replacement cost was £35k (US $55k). Other areas have seen smaller repair bills. Sussex officials spent just £16k (US $25,900) to resume ticketing after fifteen separate attacks. For example, activists in Crawley burned the camera located on the C406 Bewbush Drive in August 2007, while a March 2008 attack merely involved tampering with the lock on the camera housing.

Québec & Nova Scotia Drivers: BEWARE

On April 1st, 2008 significant modifications to road safety regulations in the Canadian provinces of Québec and Nova Scotia went into effect. CTV.ca reports that handheld cellular phones are now verboten while at the wheel, though hands free devices are still tolerated. Nova Scotia will begin ticketing the offense immediately, while Québec has allowed for a three-month grace periods in which offenders will only receive stern warnings and moralizing sermons. The first offense in Nova Scotia will cost $165, while costing $80-$110 and three demerit points in Québec. Still not satisfied, road safety advocate Jean-Marie de Koeninck argues that “[h]ands-free is just as dangerous. (But) by forbidding the hand-held it does send a signal that there is a problem with the cellphone, there’s a problem with concentration”. Meanwhile, the same traffic safety bill in Québec also doubled all speeding fines , with new suspension of license provisions for those caught traveling at 40 km/h over the limit in under-60 zones, 50 km/h in 60-90 over zones, and 60 km/h over in 100+ zones. All in the name of safety, presumably.

E85 Madness: GM Car Czar Maximum Bob Back to Normal

As we mentioned yesterday, GM has bought a piece of Coskata, a bacteria-loving ethanol high tech start-up. Speaking to DailyTech, GM Car Czar Maximum Bob Lutz described the process. “All the other companies use enzymes, which are incredibly expensive.” Instead, Coskata grinds organic wastes into a powder which is “then exposed to plasma, which causes the organic powder to ferment, releasing carbon-chain gas.” [NB: plasma is a superheated ionized gas which would incinerate the material] This gas “rises into the air where natural anaerobic bacteria eats [sic] the gas molecules and excretes [sic] ethanol and water vapor.” [NB 2: anaerobic bacteria can’t survive “in the air”] Maximum Bob promises a pilot plant will produce ethanol this year. By 2011, they’ll be cranking out 50 to 100m gallons of ethanol per year. And get this: “The price per gallon to produce the fuel is approximately $1 per gallon.” MB admits that overhead, profits, shipping, etc. will raise that price to around $2 per gallon. And they’ll have to fight big oil to get their cheap fuel to the masses as “less than 1% of the pumps in the U.S. are ethanol-equipped.” Here’s a thought: why not give GM dealers ethanol pumps? That would more than quadruple America’s E85 outlets at a stroke. Sorry, Bob; make that “with one move.”

James on air today

Simon Mayo must be a Top Gear fan. After getting Richard in to talk about, let’s be honest, his new book, James May is taking his turn today.

We just spoke to the Five Live show producers and apparently he’s on just after 3pm, probably until around half past.

No doubt one of James’ recent publications will turn up in the conversation, but primarily the chat’s about the new Top Gear telly series, which started on BBC Two last night.

Mayo also plans to talk about Lewis’ big win - including a killer question about whether Captain Slow sympathises with Timo Glock. We expect he’ll probably reply ‘who?’ and turn the conversation on to classic motorbikes.

Tune in on your wireless or online at the Five Live website. And, Mr Mayo, we’re guessing you’ll go after Jeremy next, right? Good luck with that…

Bottoming?

Are we actually getting near to that ‘floor’ where investors start to see assets that look low price in relation to where they will be in two years’ time and therefore jump in? Some sectors have taken a right old pasting, obviously. Construction firms, banks and automotive companies spring to mind. If you can judge where the floor is and you have a few million/billion dollars spare, that’s how you get to be one of the ’sitting pretties’ when the next 15-year boom happens.

People need houses and they need finance and, at some point, they need to buy cars.

There are some clever people doing a lot of sums, looking at past ‘market corrections’ to try to determine where this floor is. They’re looking for those first early warnings and signals that we’re getting closer. Interest rates are coming down rapidly. Inflation worries appear to have largely gone out of the door. Last time I looked oil was under $60 a barrel.

A few swallows do not a summer make, but the last 24 hours have seen some positive sentiment towards car companies on the markets. And I have just read a release from Edmunds suggesting that while the October sales numbers in the US light vehicle market are not exactly going to be cause for jubilation, the second half of the month saw a slight resurgence. Edmunds’ analysts say that it could mean pent-up demand is starting to come through. If your car is falling apart and you do still have a job, maybe you have to take the plunge.

And if that is so, do you think at that end of the chain those finance companies who can finance purchases will continue to sit on their hands? At some point people return to the market to get a competitive advantage. A few move and then the rest have to. And that goes back through the chain to wholesale credit markets, also. Taxpayers have underwritten the banks. That message will start to seep through. The bad debts and the ‘credit default swaps’ might start to seem less scary as time goes by. Banks that don’t lend are like restaurants that don’t sell food. It’s not a natural state for too long.

Okay, that’s my attempt at an upbeat address. Yes, it’s bad and we’re heading into recesssion. But a) it is not the end of the world, actually - some correction to things like house prices in places like UK is not all bad - and b) the markets will have discounted much of the bad news and people are already thinking about making money in two years’ time. The biggest bargains are the assets that will more than wash their faces five years from now. Not all car companies are crocks. Like the auto industry’s products, appearances can be deceptive. Some of the worst looking companies are very much better underneath. Investor billionaires needing my advice know where to get in touch.

Keep employees in loop for maximum productivity

By Marcia Heroux Pounds
The Sun Sentinel

Iris Harris has two jobs.

First, she was recently promoted from an executive assistant to an office manager for the Daszkal Bolton accounting firm when it opened a new office in Sunrise, Florida. Then, she was asked to assume the additional duties of an executive assistant.

“I was thinking, ‘Wasn’t I promoted from that?’ ” she says.

But Ms. Harris saw the company’s need and recognized she could generate revenue for the firm by working with its professionals.

“At the end of the day, we all have the same goal,” she says.

Employees today are often being asked to do more than one job. Sometimes, a layoff has occurred and the work still has to be done. Other times, there is a need to add staff but the business is taking a cautious approach to hiring in a slow economy.

More companies are looking at improving efficiency. Sometimes, that means merging two functions into one, says South Florida compensation specialist Ralph Parilla. “Employees are really responsive to it. They see it’s difficult out there,” he says.

    World’s Fastest Production Car

Faster than a Bugatti Veyron, despite costing less than half the price..

It has a turbocharged 6.3-liter aluminum V8 that develops 1183 hp at 7000 rpm, on 91-octane fuel.

    Street-legal.

    What is it?

    The SSC Ultimate Aero.

[It’s] called the SSC Ultimate Aero. The guy who built
it, Jerod Shelby (no relation to Carroll Shelby), did it all in reverse
compared to most fledgling supercar companies. First, after seven years
of work, he produced the car. Next, he set a production car world speed
record on the road and certified the SSC for U.S. emissions. Only then,
after he broke the record, did he finally tell everybody about it. At a
two-way average speed of 256 mph, the SSC Ultimate Aero is actually
faster than a $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron, which has been clocked at
253 mph. And at about $650,000, it’s a lot less expensive.

One of the coolest things?  According to the maker, if you drive carefully, you can get 19mpg highway in it.

They plan to make 50 of them. Next up for the company is a 200mph 4-door sports sedan.

Anyway, there’s plenty of information in the article by Jay Leno (linked above).  And more information on this hot car in the video that I can’t seem to embed in the post, but can be watched on Page 2 of the article linked above.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Beats Camaro and Challenger in Power-to-Weight Ratio

The Genesis Coupe’s base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 making an estimated 220 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual will be the standard transmission; a five-speed automatic is optional. Top speed is expected to be 137 mph, with highway fuel economy estimated at 30 mpg. Hyundai will offer a Track model of the four-cylinder coupe, but the top four-banger will be the R-Spec model with performance add-ons and comfort conveniences targeted at tuners.

2009 AC Schnitzer BMW X6 Falcon

The BMW X6 has received mixed reception since its debut last year. Mechanically essentially the same as the much-more-useful X5, the 2009 X6 trades interior and cargo space for… what could be called… styling.

Legendary German BMW tuning house AC Schnitzer has largely succeeded in making the best of the BMW X6’s rather strange design language with the 2009 AC Schnitzer X6 Falcon. But X6 upgrades don’t stop at the aerodynamics and styling level. Choosing to tackle the X6 diesel variants, AC Schnitzer has given the X6 Falcon real usable everyday power and an aero and styling kit we really like.

A wide-body kit, especially prevalent in the rear, envelopes AC Schnitzer Type V11 22 inch wheels that look perfectly at home on the X6 Falcon. A black-and-gold two tone paint job on the promotional model would make Bruce Wayne jealous, and further accentuates the lines of the X6 Falcon’s aero kit.

AC Schnitzer leaves no stone unturned when giving the BMW X6 the Falcon treatment, promising better grip and sharper cornering from a heavily-modified suspension. The Falcon interior gets signature AC Schnitzer  two-tone leather as well.

BMW X6 performance parts can be purchased from AC Schnitzer separately, or the Falcon will be available as a total conversion soon. Contact AC Schnitzer for pricing information.

    X6 Fires a Broadside

    Official AC Schnitzer Press Release

AC Schnitzer Presents New Addition to Falcon Territory

Falcons are becoming increasingly common in town. Now a particularly imposing variant of the agile predator is conquering the road valleys with its broad wings: the Falcon based on the X6 by AC Schnitzer. It follows the styling features of the X5 version of the same name, already successfully launched. Other identifying marks are the striking wing extensions of PU-RIM, a high quality plastic which is far more flexible and robust than for example GRP laminate or deep-drawn materials such as ABS. The dimensions of the X6 in the attractive lengthways format are 70 mm wider at the front axle and 80 mm wider at the rear. In other respects too the Falcon is perfectly adapted to its habitat. Instead of sweeping through the sky, it swept around the North Loop of the Nürburgring in numerous laps until the chassis developers and Engineering Director Manfred Wollgarten were totally satisfied with the setup of the new AC Schnitzer springs. Now the X6 remains firmly on the ground even at speeds which a normal falcon only achieves in a nosedive. And of course, on every corner. Downforce instead of lift, was the motto in the design of the impressive plumage, styled by Chief Designer Michele Viandante. The aerodynamics package includes a front skirt with diagonal air inlets, and repositioned fog lamps. The submarining protection has been removed in favour of a dynamically contoured spoiler edge. The Falcon rear now wears a solid skirt with edge frame. In contrast to the original, all components are painted in body colour throughout, so that the body appears drawn further down and hence more dominant. Instead of the submarining protection also originally fitted here, AC Schnitzer has opted for a rear diffuser and completed the effect with a new rear spoiler.

While birds generally sing in high keys, the bass engine note of the Falcon is more suggestive of a big cat. The twin-flow exhaust system in AC Schnitzer Racing Design however has an excellent resonance section. A lot of noise about nothing? On the contrary: thanks to the Control Unit, AC Schnitzer takes the series diesel engines, already excellent as standard, of types 30d and 35d to 200 kW / 272 HP instead of 173 kW / 235 HP, and 228 kW / 310 HP instead of 210 kW / 286 HP respectively. Perfect handling with corresponding Look and Feel is achieved with the “EVO” 3-spoke sports airbag steering wheel.

Instead of the falconer’s rings, the “legs” of the Falcon are decorated with the multipiece

AC Schnitzer alloy wheels Type Vll. With black or silver paint and a dense sequence of spokes, the 22″ rim perfectly complements the challenging appearance. The alternating spread angle of the web pairs gives a refined look. Decorated and equipped in this way, the AC Schnitzer Falcon really has no natural enemies out there.
