Chrysler November Sales Drop 47%

You gotta love Chrysler. But not me. How in the world can they claim a right to MY tax money when they can’t even acknowledge their sales debacle on their own website? In fact, ChryCo’s sales dropped from last November’s 161,088 units to this year’s 85,260 units. Instead of admitting they’re up excrement creek without a paddle, today’s ChyrCo posting is “Why America Should Care About the U.S. Auto Industry.” How about this: why should we bail out Chrysler when its owned by a private equity group with deep pockets?

2010 Jaguar XJ spy shot

Although we’ve caught the 2010 Jaguar XJ testing under the cloak of the current car’s skin, this looks like possibly the first shot at the new body for the future full-size Jag.

The XJ series has always followed similar styling trough all of its refreshes over the last 40 years, but now it seems all bets are off for 2010. Everything is subject to change from the little details like the “J-gate” shifter to the entire body styling. Rumors peg the new XJ as taking design cues from the XF, and will likely take the shape of the coupelike sedan that Jaguar is famous for designing.

When the car is unveiled by the end of 2009, expect engine choices to be variations of the new 5.0-liter V8 that will range from 400 to 500 hp. There is also expected to be a diesel version that will not make it to the U.S. Just like the XF, where it used its predecessor car as a chassis base, the 2010 XJ will likely carryover the current car’s aluminum chassis.

Volkwagen readying Touareg 2 for 2009 Dakar

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Volkswagen Touareg 2 Race

Volkswagen Motorsport is putting four factory-backed teams in next year’s ‘Dakar’ Rally, which will actually be held in South America, and they’ll all be driving the new Race Touareg 2. The insanely intricate spaceframe chassis vehicles are being built in Germany and will use will use a 2.5-liter TDI with 276 hp and. The 15-stage race is expected to be more grueling than usual because of the extreme changes in altitude and terrain, but perhaps it will give other teams a chance to break Mitsubishi’s seven-year chokehold on the winner’s dais. Volkswagen’s best chance at victory could be with driver Carlos Sainz, the 1990 WRC champion, and navigator Michel Perlin, a three-time Dakar winning navigator. The last — and only — time VW won the Dakar Rally was in 1980, with the Volkswagen Iltis.

PRESS RELEASE

VOLKSWAGEN RACE TOUAREG 2 TAKES SHAPE FOR 2009 ‘DAKAR’ RALLY

The ‘Dakar’ Rally 2009 promises to be the most demanding test yet for the Volkswagen Motorsport team, as it prepares to take on some of the harshest and most challenging terrain on the planet with four examples of the Race Touareg 2.

The four factory-fielded Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 models will be piloted by Spaniard Carlos Sainz and his French navigator Michel Perlin; Giniel de Villiers (South Africa) and Dirk von Zitzewith (Germany); Mark Miller (USA) and Ralph Pitchford (South Africa) and Dieter Depping partnered with fellow German Timo Gottschalk. The racers, powered by a 2.5-litre TDI diesel engine producing 280 PS, are currently under construction at Volkswagen Motorsport in Hanover, Germany. From there, working to a tight deadline of November 15, the support and service trucks plus parts and equipment needed to compete in the world’s toughest motorsport event will be transported to Le Havre, France, for scrutineering which takes place on November 26, before being shipped out to South America.

For the first time in the event’s history, the 2009 race takes place across the South American continent. Starting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 3 January 2009 and covering more than 9,000 gruelling kilometres (5,625 miles) over 15 stages, the teams will travel through Argentina and Chile from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts and back again.

The stages include passage through the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world with the highest dune fields, along with two crossings of the Andes encountering altitudes of up to 4,600 metres. In preparation for these extreme conditions, both man and machine have been specially prepared. The drivers have completed altitude training in the Alps, while the 2.5-litre TDI engines have been subjected to thousands of kilometres of extensive durability testing in an environment chamber, designed to simulate extreme altitudes.

The constantly changing landscapes and varying terrain along the route are not only an extremely demanding test for the vehicles, drivers and co-drivers, but they also provide a new set of challenges for the technicians and engineers in terms of vehicle set-up and maintenance.

The Race Touareg ‘Dakar’ prototype has scored nine wins over 24 events and 29 podium finishes. With two victories and a second place in three races during 2008, the Race Touareg 2 is one of the most successful cars of the year and each of the teams are hoping to build on this success in 2009.

The Hour Approaches: Detroit Returns to Capitol Hill; Buick and Opel To Converge

DETROIT - While my colleagues in the auto-journo world are expecting a bonanza of new product news not seen since the 2007 United Auto Workers contract, a voice of reason on the Republican side of the aisle could put a damper on the big day. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio) has warned Congress not to go public with the Detroit Three’s plans. Voinovich has “expressed concern about whether proprietary information submitted by the Big Three will be protected from disclosure,” Congressional Quarterly reports Monday afternoon. Voinovich is part of the bi-partisan group of senators who introduced a plan after the D3 dog ‘n pony show on Capitol Hill last month, calling on Congress to redirect $25 billion in low-interest loans originally part of the Energy Bill, and meant to help automakers switch to green, fuel-efficient cars.

UAW considers reopening contracts to aid Big 3

WASHINGTON — As Detroit’s Big Three are poised to present their business plans to Congress today justifying quick approval of $25 billion in emergency loans, the United Auto Workers has called an emergency meeting in Detroit on Wednesday during which the union could consider reopening its 2007 contracts with the automakers.

Photo of the week: Ferrari California crossed up

Does the new Ferrari California drive like a real Ferrari should? Road test editor Chris Chilton tested the California V8 last week and thought it a brilliantly judged new addition to the Ferrari range (read his review here).

But our eyes opened wider when an email landed today with a photo of European correspondent Georg Kacher behind the California’s wheel and clearly enjoying – in the interests of research – a touch of oversteer on the slippy-slidey roads of Sicily.

We thought it worth publishing this shot to capture the drama of the moment alone. And big Georg caught the slide, we’re glad to report. The California was returned to Ferrari in one piece…

Make sure you buy the new December 2008 issue of CAR Magazine – out next week on 29 October – to read our definitive 10-page, 3000-word review and stunning photoshoot of the Ferrari California

01 December 2008 14:51

On the eve of the Wales Rally GB this weekend, CAR publishes a series of video exclusives, as we gather five rallying legends to talk us through their favourite driving roads around the globe.

Ari Vatanen, Miki Biasion, Marcus Gronholm, Mikko Hirvoenen and Jimmy McRae star in our video series, as we take you from Monte Carlo to Finland, Wales to Italy. The videos, produced in association with Ford, put the rally drivers in the latest Ford Focus hot hatchbacks on some of the most gruelling roads in the world.

Each driver donated their time and fee to the Colin McRae Vision charity, in memory of the world champ who died last year. Click play on our video player beneath to watch the footage. And be sure to come back every day this week as we upload a new video every day.

>> Do you agree with the rally aces’ favourite roads? Click ‘Add your comment’ and be sure to tell us where they should have gone

Whoopee, TMS getting its very own Snob Hill

A week or so ago, Texas Motor Speedway sent out an e-mail to media outlets about a new project and ticket deal they were going to announce Monday. As a fan I was hoping they might be putting in a cool infield garage fan experience like the Neon Garage at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, I was way off. Instead, Eddie Gossage and the gang are building their very own LVMS-style Snob Hill RV section or Burn Out Alley as they like to call it. Yes, friends for a mere 15 grand you can park your luxury coach in a 30 foot by 60 foot RV “suite” space above the backstretch grandstands. Each super-sized spot comes complete with full hookups, private seats, private restrooms, free wireless Internet, and concierge grocery service. You also get all kinds of goodies like infield passes and programs and pre-race passes, etc. Oh, but there are rules, my rich friends. No flag flying, or scaffolding or standing on top of your gold-plated RV to watch the race … what I thought we were camping at a NASCAR race? Oh and if you’re planning on parking that green and blue Dale Jr. party bus up on Snob Hill, you might be in for a surprise. The precise wording on the TMS site says this: Only appropriate RVs are to be parked within this area. NO BOX TRUCKS. Texas Motor Speedway reserves the right to approve any vehicles wishing to park within Burn Out Alley.
