“Sweet Life Geely Drive” Behind Ford’s Plans to Sell Volvo

“Sweet Life Geely Drive” is the tagline for the Shanghai-based automaker that Ford Motor Company identified Wednesday as its “preferred buyer” for Volvo. The Swedish automaker has been on the block for some time, so why now? Since Ford has acknowledged it needs the money and will sell its single remaining automaker purchase after unloading Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and controlling interest in Mazda, General Motors has found buyers for Saab, Hummer and Opel (more on that one, later) and nearly sold Saturn.

For one, Ford Motor needs the cash. While it stands alone as the only of the Detroit Three that didn’t take government loan guarantees (it couldn’t, without the Ford family giving up control), its stock languishes below $10 per share, Standard & Poor lowered its credit rating to “selective default” last spring and United Auto Worker locals are rejecting a union leadership deal to give the automaker the same sort of breaks that GM and Chrysler enjoyed prior to their bankruptcies.

Alliance Airport (Fort Worth)
Oct. 24 (Saturday)

The ShockWave triple Pratt & Whitney jet engines truck sent sound waves through the Alliance Airshow crowd. The jet truck raced down a runway against an airplane on Saturday and Sunday. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it is the world’s fastest truck that is capable of reaching speeds of over 375 mph. With over 36,000 h.p., ShockWave can accelerate at almost 3 G’s vertical, which is as fast as the Space Shuttle. If you would like more information on the jet truck, go to Les Shockley Jet Shows: shockwavejets.com

News & Rants: Oprah Discusses Moms Driving Under the Influence

Today, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” looks at moms who drive while drunk or high and focuses on Diane Schuler’s story. This summer, Schuler drove the wrong way down the Taconic State Parkway in New York and crashed into an oncoming SUV, killing the three adults inside it. Schuler, her 3-year-old daughter and her three nieces were also killed. Toxicology tests found that Schuler had both alcohol and marijuana in her system.

Kelley Blue Book: Cash for Clunkers Bubble Will Burst

Here’s one new car shoppers won’t be reading on the home page at Kelley Blue Book. Via press release, the car guide’s boffins wonder what will happen when the federal government stops handing out free money to clunker-driving new car buyers. Unless the Cash for Clunker scheme is extended indefinitely (a possibility) and/or widened to include other types of vehicles (less possible but not improbable), the bubble she gonna burst. And then, bad things. Euphoria, meet reality.

Quote of the Day: Send in the Clones?

Sometimes, I come across a quote that is, in or itself, perfect. Like this one from 11alive.com, re: the theft of seven Shriners parade cars.

What these burglars have done is really set the organization back in terms of our parades. Our next parade would have been the College Park Parade, in College Park. And without our cars, it’s just real difficult. So me and the other members of the Temple, we’re going to have to come up with a plan and see what we can do to try to put ourselves back in the parades…. The Temple has clowns. But if you didn’t have the mini-cars, I mean, to me, it’s not a parade.

Anyone with coulrophobia, a kind heart or both can send your donations to Nabbar Temple Motor Unit, 330 Auburn Ave., Atlanta, GA 30312. Meanwhile and in any case, click here for my favorite Shriners’ Mini car site.

Québec & Nova Scotia Drivers: BEWARE

On April 1st, 2008 significant modifications to road safety regulations in the Canadian provinces of QuĂ©bec and Nova Scotia went into effect. CTV.ca reports that handheld cellular phones are now verboten while at the wheel, though hands free devices are still tolerated. Nova Scotia will begin ticketing the offense immediately, while QuĂ©bec has allowed for a three-month grace periods in which offenders will only receive stern warnings and moralizing sermons. The first offense in Nova Scotia will cost $165, while costing $80-$110 and three demerit points in QuĂ©bec. Still not satisfied, road safety advocate Jean-Marie de Koeninck argues that “[h]ands-free is just as dangerous. (But) by forbidding the hand-held it does send a signal that there is a problem with the cellphone, there’s a problem with concentration”. Meanwhile, the same traffic safety bill in QuĂ©bec also doubled all speeding fines , with new suspension of license provisions for those caught traveling at 40 km/h over the limit in under-60 zones, 50 km/h in 60-90 over zones, and 60 km/h over in 100+ zones. All in the name of safety, presumably.

Autonomous cars?

Autonomous cars?

26th October 2009 18:23

Advances in modern technology are making many things possible. Mostly, the enhancements to the way we lead our lives that are made possible by technological wizardry are a good thing. Sometimes they are not.

I don’t much fancy giving up control of my car in order to be driven in autopilot inches from the car in front in a road train. Being in the slipstream like that might conserve fuel, but it doesn’t sound like fun does it? Yes, we do get in planes that ‘fly by wire’ and cruise control is generally a good thing, but moving at speed inches from the car in front, trusting the technology to that extent, sounds hairy to me.

Okay, let’s assume I’m being a bit of a wuss and that this is something that simply takes some getting used to and that eventually you are quite comfortable with it. There’s something else to consider: just think of the legal issues regarding responsibility for the vehicle. The half-and-half solution in which you cede control of your car for part of the journey is particularly muddled. Imagine the fun and games at the ‘transfer’ moments.

‘Autonomous vehicles’ in the way Robbie G describes it, sounds like a complete non-starter to me.

Surely the research would be better applied to intelligent shuttle buses that are an extension to public transport systems, leaving the private car alone?

Sure, we’ve all been on journeys when we’d prefer to take our hands off the wheel and read a newspaper. I am not disagreeing with that. I quite like taking the train sometimes. I have been on buses before. I like driving cars, but long journeys on motorways can be draining. Driving a car in a congested city is rarely fun. This technology would be far better taken to its logical conclusion – the vehicle takes you from the start of the journey to your destination.

The technology underlying autonomous vehicles can take us a massive step further by adding door-to-door transportation in a specially designed and dedicated vehicle (it wouldn’t even need a steering wheel and would be designed to be in passenger, not driving, mode all the time – so you could have an interior especially designed for that).

At a stroke the legal issues associated with losing driver control of a private car are gone. In this scenario the vehicle and the infrastructure is provided by a public transportation authority. That would also probably reassure people that there were reasonably robust systems in place to make the technology reliable. There would undoubtedly be huge economies of scale in buying and running a fleet of these things.

The vehicles could also be calibrated to journey demand for maximum operational efficiency. If eight people are headed in a certain direction, an appropriately sized vehicle rocks up outside the door, alerting your cell phone when it is in position. Vehicle occupancy should be relatively high – no more big buses with one or two people on them - making CO2 output per head lower. A smart operating system is permanently calculating optimal passenger pick-ups and drop-offs. In this scenario, the technology basically replaces buses with smaller and more efficient units better calibrated to passenger journeys and numbers. No more buses running in packs or getting rained on at the bus stop.

Okay, I hear you ask, have you been on a typical city bus lately? After you have successfully dodged the knife wielding hoodie, ignored the random musings of the swaying drunk and avoided the fresh chewing gum stuck to the floor, that seat on the bus isn’t such an attractive place.

True. But you could always be in control and take the car, instead. The choice is yours.
