Advice: Ford Unveils Inflatable Rear Seat Belts

Ford has taken two life-saving devices — the seat belt and airbag — and combined them into a new safety feature, the inflatable seat belt. This new technology would give backseat passengers — most often our children — extra protection in a crash. What parent wouldn’t want more protection for their most precious cargo?

Bailout Watch 565: Small Business Adminstration Dealer Bailout Grows

Car dealers are some of the most politically connected people in America. As we reported yesterday, more than a few axed GM store owners demonstrated their political muscles by forcing the nationalized automaker to rescind their franchise terminations. Further back in time, we highlighted the Obama administration’s “stealth” dealer bailout: a car dealer-specific Small Business Administration (SBA) loan program. Under the program, the SBA guarantees 75 percent of a car dealer’s floor-plan line of credit, ranging from $500,000 to $2 million. The SBA’s network of private-sector lenders make the loans. In theory. In practice, it’s been what the Brits call a damp squib. Although Automotive News [AN, sub] fails to put any hard numbers to the program’s failure, they acknowledge that the SBA dealer deal “has had trouble attracting lender participation since its May launch.” Needless to say, the “answer” to the SBA lenders’ entirely understandable reticence/prudence is . . . bigger loans and more federal backing.

Texas, Ohio: Voters Reject Photo Enforcement

Voters in three cities sent a clear message to local lawmakers yesterday by adopting charter amendments that ban photo enforcement. In addition to kicking two camera supporters from the city council, 72 percent of those voting in Chillicothe, Ohio approved a total prohibition on the use of red light cameras and speed cameras. In College Station, Texas the vote was much closer, but at the end of the night 52 percent wanted the red light cameras to come down. In Heath, Ohio 51 percent voted against the cameras. A total of nine cities nationwide have used the initiative process to ban camera enforcement since 1991, with camera proponents never having won a public vote.

Québec & Nova Scotia Drivers: BEWARE

On April 1st, 2008 significant modifications to road safety regulations in the Canadian provinces of Québec and Nova Scotia went into effect. CTV.ca reports that handheld cellular phones are now verboten while at the wheel, though hands free devices are still tolerated. Nova Scotia will begin ticketing the offense immediately, while Québec has allowed for a three-month grace periods in which offenders will only receive stern warnings and moralizing sermons. The first offense in Nova Scotia will cost $165, while costing $80-$110 and three demerit points in Québec. Still not satisfied, road safety advocate Jean-Marie de Koeninck argues that “[h]ands-free is just as dangerous. (But) by forbidding the hand-held it does send a signal that there is a problem with the cellphone, there’s a problem with concentration”. Meanwhile, the same traffic safety bill in Québec also doubled all speeding fines , with new suspension of license provisions for those caught traveling at 40 km/h over the limit in under-60 zones, 50 km/h in 60-90 over zones, and 60 km/h over in 100+ zones. All in the name of safety, presumably.

Chrysler presentations

Chrysler presentations

4th November 2009 18:48

Is Chrysler really going to fly in partnership with Fiat? It is perhaps coming off a low base where it has been stuck with the wrong products at the wrong time - and a poor image (the latest US sales weren’t great). But Marchionne reckons the cost-cutting - under Cerberus - has at least given it a shot to succeed at a lower breakeven point. Add in the manufacturing and distribution synergies to come that are made possible by working with Fiat and there is at least hope.

I was in Auburn Hills recently and someone remarked that everyone there is now having to get used to new culture again after the changes of the last decade. But I got the impression it’s seen as a very positive experience, the chance to be creative again in a flatter organisation. One thing about this new culture under Marchionne: there’s an openness about the approach. I think the below link will work for you as well as me; some interesting presentations there on product development and steps taken to improve Chrysler processes in quality, in particular.

4 SALE - CHEAP

This 1979 Dodge Magnum XE–the Dodge equivalent of Ricardo Montalban’s B-platform Chrysler Cordoba–has been sitting in a parking lot on West Market Street in Akron for several months, with a for-sale sign on the dash and a suggested retail price on the windshield.

I hope the seller is willing to negotiate, because $1,950 seems wildly optimistic, considering that the car is probably a four-wheeled financial black hole. The trouble starts with the deteriorated paint, the bondo-and-primer job on the door, and the prominent cracks in the soft Corinthian leather seats. At the very least, it will need new upholstery, some significant body repair, and a new paint job before it starts to look presentable. Under the hood, you will likely find a smogified 318 V-8 with the infamous “Lean Burn” spark control computer–not one of Chrysler’s better engineering ideas. Figure on some serious bucks to replace the fragile and inefficient Lean Burn with an ignition system that works–along with all the other mechanical gremlins you are likely to find on a thirty-year old car that wasn’t all that well put together to begin with.

Even if you restored it to better condition than the day it left Windsor, Ontario, it would still be a soft, mushy, oversized, underpowered “personal luxury” car of a type they thankfully don’t make any more. There is no rational reason to restore a car like this.

So why does a part of me want to go back and copy down the seller’s phone number off the sign on the dash?

–Cookie the Dog’s Owner

Get Your Subaru Ready For Fall & Winter Seattle!

Fall is here, Is you Subaru ready for winter?

Things to look at on your Subaru now that the leaves are starting to turn color are as follows.

The engine oil level and condition should be inspected, if it has been longer than a few months since it has been changed now is the time.

Engine coolant should be inspected for level, proper freeze protection and for any signs of contamination.

The wiper blades should be checked for streaking, tears and cracks.  Windshield washer fluid should be checked for level and freeze protection as well.

Tires should be checked for the proper pressure, wear, punctures (screws and nails) and for weather checking this is also a good time to consider rotating and balancing the tires as well.

All of the lights should be checked for proper function and the head light lenses inspected for any signs of dulling or pitting as this can be corrected and greatly improve night time visibility.

If the Subaru is due for any maintenance such as the transmission fluid or differential fluids being serviced now is the time, as starting out the cold part of the year with fresh fluids will go a long way in protecting the devices the fluids are intended to lubricate.

The coolant hoses and accessory drive belts should be inspected and replaced if the hoses feel soft or crunchy, or if the belts are cracked or frayed.

This is a good time to inspect the spare tire, vehicle jack and lug wrench, a flat spare tire really won’t do you much good.

The battery should be serviced and tested; the charging and starting systems looked at as well including the battery cables.

These are just a few examples of ways to get your Subaru ready for fall and winter; a little preventative maintenance can go a long way towards a trouble free Fall and Winter driving season.

Thanks for reading

Justin

The Future Chrysler Lineup

Chrysler is betting on style to help win over customers. Today, the automaker announced its plans for the future at a presentation in Michigan. Evoking images of the 1950s — yes, even Don Draper from “Mad Men” was shown as an example — executives hope future designs will resonate with consumers as something different in the marketplace. The company’s new logo (above) was used throughout the presentation, as well.

We’re not sure if there will be a true “upscale” move or if the company will stick to style alone — as with the 300C — to sway buyers. The company’s product timeline is below.

At the end of the product roundup, there was absolutely no mention of Alfa Romeo being sold again in the U.S. That was just one of the many points the Wall Street Journal’s sources got wrong in a report last week.
