Survey: More Drivers Want Internet in Their Cars

Consumers have their hearts set on in-car internet access, and they don’t seem particularly worried about safety issues that may arise from this connectivity, according to a survey by Autobytel.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents younger than 35 said the ability to surf the internet from inside their cars was either “very important” or “nice to have,” the survey says. When asked if they’d like safer communication devices, such as voice-controlled devices that minimize distraction, only 14% of respondents overall favored them, and they were favored by only 8% of those younger drivers.

GPS was the device most cited as the convenient gadget drivers would like but did not yet have, with 30% naming it as the device they most wanted for their car.

Respondents were split on how fast we’ll get wireless for our cars, with 50% saying most cars would have it by 2013.

WAROTD: GMC Granite, Compact Chevy Van Planned. Impala, Compact Pickup Coming?

GM has been showing off all kinds of future product at its day-long “Global Business Conference,” as it drums up support for its upcoming IPO. Sadly TTAC was not invited, but a wealth of exciting news is percolating through the autoblogosphere. Like this item: Compact MPVs are a big deal.

GMC’s “Granite” concept (above) has been approved for production, to be built on the Cruze’s Delta II platform. According to Automotive News [sub], Chevrolet will double GM’s pleasure by “launch[ing] a family van soon in several global regions” based on the same “global compact” architecture. Would this be the long-rumored Chevy Orlando? Orlando was off-again for the US market the last time we checked, replaced by the Volt MPV5 and the Granite… if this is not the Orlando, GM’s already-crowded herd of compact CUVs, MPVs and other five-doors is getting even more crowded than it seemed nearly a year ago.

Speaking of which, the biggest GM sin-in-the-making of last summer’s hype, the lack of replacement for the aged Impala before 2014, may have been acknowledged inside the RenCen. Several outlets reported being shown a new Impala concept, indicating that perhaps GM is taking its need for a competitive large sedan more seriously.

On a final GM product-related note, Carscoop has uncovered patent drawings of a Chevrolet compact pickup, meaning we might just have got one Wild Ass Rumor right. No word on anything related to that product yet, so like the “family van” this could be a Chevrolet for markets outside of the US.

Pennzoil and RCR Street Performance Group collaborate on special edition Chevrolet Camaro

Question: What’s the best way to attract attention to your newly-launched line of products so that customers have more reason to buy it?

Answer: Give away a special-edition 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS for a prize!

Not exactly the most ingenious of marketing ploys, but Pennzoil’s sticking to it, and they’re even launching the “Get Your Key to Clean” promotion by partnering with RCR Street Performance and giving participants the chance to go home with a brand new, special-edition Camaro SS.

Speaking of the Camaro, it’s been completely modded to become quite a beauty in its own right. It’s given a Magnussen supercharger, new custom headers, a Wilwood six-piston big brake kit, 22″ custom wheels, black out rear light area and tail lights, carbon fiber material on the front splitter, rear diffuser, side skirts, rear spoiler, hood, and, of course, an old school grille.

So how exactly do you win this magnificent piece of machinery? Well, all you need to do is hop onto the Pennzoil website, fill out a form, submit, and you’re entered in the contest! Piece of cake!

The contest runs until July 31 where Pennzoil will pick five finalists and treat them to an RCR VIP Experience at the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway the weekend of October 16, 2010. A ceremony will then be held right before the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race where each of the five finalists will be given a key, one of which will start the engine of the RCR Street Performance Camaro SS. The finalist with the key that starts the engine will win the car and be announced the Grand Prize Winner.
