Contrary to popular opinion, that’s not really because we prefer oddball Citroens and Chevrolet Citations to Ferraris as cars, or even objects d’lust. Rather, it’s because Ferraris are so obviously worthy of lust, and have been so widely feted for their lust-worthy qualities, that there’s just not much left to say about them. The Ferrari America and the 360 Modena are obviously brilliant cars, but everybody under the sun already knows everything about them. That fertile ground has already been plowed, sown, and reaped many times.

The exception to that rule is today’s car, the 1984 Ferrari 288 GTO. This latter-day 1980s GTO just happens to be that rarest of breeds–a limited-production, hyper-exotic Ferrari supercar that, due to a strange combination of circumstances, has remained far more obscure than its nameplate and performance would indicate.

In the early-to-mid 1980s, a fresh, relatively unrestricted race-car specification package known as Group B gave birth to a variety of dangerously fast and ridiculously wonderful cars. The race cars spawned by Group B were among the fastest and most technologically advanced road-based vehicles on the planet; after they proved too fast for rallying, they were eventually outlawed.

Their street-car counterparts were built for the sole purpose of legitimizing the race cars, and were nearly as extreme. Among these homologation specials were performance legends and former Car Lusts such as the Porsche 959, Audi Sport Quattro, Lancia Delta S4 and 037, Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 205 T16, Ford RS200, and the Citroen BX. These cars bristled with genuinely exotic hardware; mid-engine configurations, huge turbochargers, race-car-level horsepower, and sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems. The twist is that in most cases, these cars had started life as entry-level econoboxes; their profiles screamed “grocery getter,” but the hardware made them the fastest street cars in the world.

Remember the Renault Le Car? Now imagine a Le Car bristling with wings, spoilers, wide tires, and a 400-horsepower turbocharged engine mounted amidships and powering all four wheels. That was Group B. It was madness, but it was divine madness.

Instead of starting with an economy car as Peugeot or Renault did, Ferrari started with something infinitely more exotic–the long, low, and swoopy mid-engined 308 sports car. To that promising beginning, Ferrari added a twin-turbocharged V-8 that cranked out 400 horsepower. The result was the 288 GTO–a scarlet supercar that exploded from 0-60 in 5 seconds flat and topped out at 190 mph–serious speed in the mid-1980s. A competition background, a gorgeous body, world-class speed, and of course the instant cachet of the Ferrari badge–this car had everything needed for lasting fame. Everything, that is, but an identify of its own, because against all odds the 288 GTO was completely overshadowed by its contemporaries.

As a street car, the GTO suffered in comparison with its Group B cousins. With relatively conservative engineering and without AWD’s game-changing traction, the street-going GTO couldn’t keep pace with cars like the Ford RS200 or the Peugeot 205 T16. Making matters worse, the the demise of the Group B asphalt racing series left the GTO without a motorsports venue. Unlike the Audi Sport Quattro, the Lancias, and the Renault and Peugeot, which built legendary racing careers in Group B rallying, the Ferrari never participated in or distinguished itself in competition. Even the Porsche 959, which was also designed for the defunct asphalt series, made a name for itself by finishing seventh overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and taking a one-two finish in the Paris-Dakar Rally.

So, if you’re keeping score at home, the Ferrari came up short both in engineering and competition heritage to a group of cars that included a Peugeot hatchback. It was a very special Peugeot hatchback, admittedly, but the net result is that the GTO is one of the least-remembered of the legendary Group B cars.

That doesn’t fully explain the GTO’s lack of fame, though. After all, in the flashy world of the mid-1980s, Americans should have been worshiping at the altar of a sexy, high-performance Italian car. Well, they did; the problem is that they were adoring other sexy, high-performance Italian cars.

The GTO never had anything like enough visual horsepower or notoriety to displace the Lamborghini Countach as the teenage dream machine of choice. And even within the Ferrari lineup, the GTO was overshadowed–its stablemate, the Ferrari Testarossa, was nearly as fast, far more distinctive, and had a starring role in Miami Vice that turned it into a lust object for millions.

The GTO was even overshadowed by the cars with which it shared its role, its shape, and its name. The GTO was rapidly displaced as Ferrari’s supercar by the lovely, more publicized, and much more capable F40 exotic; compared to the wildly exotic F40, the GTO looked like a warmed-over 308. That comparatively humble 308 also outshone the GTO in the public eye; it achieved iconic fame as Thomas Magnum’s mount in Magnum P.I., and the GTO wasn’t visually distinctive enough to separate itself.. The 288 GTO wasn’t even the defining Ferrari GTO–that title belongs to the classic and timelessly gorgeous 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, which helped built Ferrari’s reputation in America.

I don’t mean to claim that the 1980s Ferrari 288 GTO was completely ignored or overshadowed; it is a Ferrari. But I’ve always found it remarkable that Ferrari produced a pretty, low-production, high-performance special that, somehow, never really impacted the public consciousness.

MOSCOW — The recently established $3.3 billion Fiat-Sollers auto alliance plans to launch the production of Jeep SUVs in Russia.

According to Russian media reports, the new models will be launched at the Fiat-Sollers plant in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, about 600 miles east of Moscow, where they will account for more than 30 percent of the plant’s total annual capacity of 500,000 units.

Russian analysts believe that the new Jeep SUVs will not compete with Korean Ssangyong SUVs already being assembled by Sollers, due to their position in different price categories.

A source close to the project said that the company will launch the production of low-cost and compact Jeep models, which are currently in great demand in Russia, such as the Jeep Compass and Patriot. These models are equipped with gas and diesel 2.0- and 2.4-liter engines.

The move to build Jeeps in Russia has been talked about for several months. Last November, when Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne met with Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin, Marchionne confirmed Fiat planned to start producing SUVs in Russia.

Not only did the total number of deaths drop, but the rate of fatalities is at its lowest level ever, at 1.16 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and others attribute the drop in deaths to the recession and folks driving less. But because the rate is also lower, it’s likely that safety improvements to new cars are another reason. Others have pointed to safety campaigns for wearing seat belts and drunken driving prevention as well.

Traffic deaths at lowest level since ‘54 (Detroit News)

There are probably 10,000 wonderful drives in Australia.

Every weekend, families all over the country pack up the car, strap the children into the seats and head off to destinations that are personal favourites full of fond childhood memories and unforgettable experiences.

But what are the truly great drives – the drives capable of changing your life and showing you the special magic of the continent? Here are 10 that I rate unforgettable:

1. NULLARBOR PLAIN, SA & WA

Flat, incredibly long and devoid of trees, but some great sights, including the Great Australian Bight, which boasts the longest uninterrupted cliff face in the world.

2. GIBB RIVER ROAD, WA

A 709-kilometre track that turns to mud in May, it traverses one of the most stunningly beautiful areas on the continent.

3. ALICE SPRINGS TO ULURU AND KINGS CANYON, NT

Drive from Alice Springs down the Stuart Highway, cross the Finke River (often nothing more than a dry riverbed), head off towards Kings Canyon on the Ernest Giles Road and stop at the amazing Henbury meteorite craters.

4. GREAT OCEAN ROAD, VIC

Carved out of the Victorian coastline as a memorial to those who had fought in the war, the road from Torquay to Warrnambool has been described as the most beautiful coastline in Australia.

5. HOBART TO FREYCINET PENINSULA, TAS

If you want to reach into the essence of historic Tasmania, it is hard to beat a circular journey that includes historic and perfectly preserved Richmond, Freycinet National Park and the pristine Wineglass Bay.

6. THE BIRDSVILLE TRACK, SA

The Birdsville Track from Marree in South Australia across the Tirari Desert and Sturt Stony Desert is one of the continent’s iconic drives.

7. WESTERN QUEENSLAND — LONGREACH, BARCALDINE, MUTTABURRA

The roads are sealed, the terrain is flat and the sites include the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Outback Museum in Longreach.

8. EDEN AND BEN BOYD NATIONAL PARK, NSW

The Ben Boyd National Park, which stretches from the Davidson Whaling Station near Boydtown to the wildly romantic Green Cape Lightstation, offers the driver an excess of isolated and peaceful coastal destinations.

9. FRASER ISLAND, QLD

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and crossing over the island’s huge 240-metre-high dunes and driving up and down the long and firm beach on the island’s eastern shore is an unforgettable 4WD experience.

10. THE DESERT CIRCUIT, NSW

For those who want to experience the desert without leaving civilisation, this circuit from Broken Hill to Tibooburra across to White Cliffs and Wilcannia and back to Broken Hill offers just about everything.

Have we missed any must-see drives?

A hot turbodiesel version of Volkswagen’s popular Golf GTi will hit the road here in June.

And Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the frugal fast four will be priced under the five-door $40,490 GTi when it arrives. By adding a turbo-diesel with ‘GTi’ credentials, VW Australia is hoping to pick up where the previous-generation GT Sport left off.

Because the five-door petrol GTi is the most popular model here, VW Australia spokesman, Karl Gehling, says only the five-door hatch GTD will be available. “The three-door actually makes up a small proportion of total petrol GTi sales,” he says.

The GTD is no slug. It will hit 100km/h in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 220km/h with a combined with average fuel consumption of just 5.3 litres/100km, giving the car a range of more than 1000km. VW has applied the lessons learned through the creation of the sixth-generation GTI to the GTD.

The GTD is powered by a 2.0-litre common-rail TDI engine that develops 125kW at 4200 revs and 350Nm from 1750 revs and CO2 emissions of just 139 g/km. Like its petrol brother, the car gets a sharper chassis, firmer suspension, 15mm lower ride height and the added benefit of riding the torque wave from just 1750 revs.

The car is expected to be available with either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. Visually the GTD takes its cues from the GTi. It gets the GTI’s honeycomb grille, badge-style and front-end design, though with the addition of chrome rather than red highlights.

The Golf’s standard wheels are replaced with 17-inch Seattle Black alloys. Inside, the main contact points are unique to the Golf GTD: a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a GTD gearshift and a standard tartan interior. The tartan finish is subtly different from the GTI, being grey, white and black, rather than red, white and black.

While Toyota has recall troubles in one of their largest markets, elsewhere in the world, another carmaker has serious recall troubles in one of their biggest markets. We usually don’t comment on each and every recall everywhere, but this one warrants mention: Brazil’s Justice Ministry has fined Fiat’s Brazilian subsidiary 3 million Reals (about $1.7 million) for failing to comply with four recall orders. Fiat had been asked to recall Stilo models to fix a wheel problem that may (note the key word “may”) have caused 8 deaths since 2004, says Business Week. No recall followed.

After filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy last June, GM has decided to launch a marketing campaign centered on “Excellence for Everyone”. The new campaign will feature more of the Corvettes and Camaros we all love. The Detroit automaker doesn’t do a good enough job leveraging those iconic names to help the Chevrolet brand, according to Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.

“When have you ever seen ’Vettes and Camaros in ads for Equinox and Malibu?” he wrote in a web chat with the Detroit Press. “This will change.”

Change is something that GM should be getting accustomed to. This effort to boost sales comes after a new CEO, multiple restructurings, and the closing down of some of their dealerships (and then the reopening of some).

We should see the news ads appear sometime in the next couple of months and although the marketing campaign is centered on “Excellence for Everyone”, Reuss assures that this will not be Chevy’s new tagline.

Celebrating the art of the magazine cover – Click above for high-res image gallery

In the high-stakes game of magazine publishing, there’s one critical component that can either make or break an entire issue. What are we talking about? The cover. Get it right and an editor-in-chief can move an extra few thousand copies to casual passers by at the nearest magazine stand. Get it wrong, as Car and Driver undeniably did for its April 1987 issue with the wretched Zimmer Quicksilver on the cover, and you end up with the worst-selling edition in the magazine’s storied history.

We just happened upon what may be the very best (or worst, depending on your point of view) time waster in the history of the Internet. It’s called Coverbrowser.com, and it allows you to see over 450,000 magazine and comic book covers dating back to well before most of us were even born. Using this tool, we dug up some of the best, worst and just plain ridiculous automotive magazine covers in the history of the universe… or something like that.

For instance, do you think unintended acceleration is in some way a new phenomenon? Think again. Can a Buick be worth $65K in 1980 dollars? Yes, according to C&D. Remember the Cadillac Cimarron? See here. Did Oldsmobile ever make a European-inspired sedan worthy of enthusiasts? Apparently, yes. The 1982 Olds Omega, built atop the X-car chassis. Can a lowly pickup truck from GMC outgun a bright red Ferrari? Sure can. How about when a 134-mph Ford was newsworthy?

Just for fun, we also analyzed a few trends in magazine covers. It seems that high-priced exotics were nearly always worthy of being shot with an equally tantalizing female model. See here, here, here and here. And, though there are rare exceptions, Japanese cars didn’t necessarily get models unless you count robot ninjas and samurais. Oh, and there’s always room for a little misplaced patriotism, right?

All of this raises an interesting question. What’s the blogging equivalent of a magazine cover? What will we all be waxing poetic about 30 years from now when we look back at Autoblog? Whatever the case, check out our gallery of awesome (or sometimes not) magazine covers below, and be sure to kill an hour or two over at Coverbrowser.com when you’re done. Got any favorites of your own? Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves in the Comments section.
