Aston Martin DB5 - Goldfinger

By
Tim Pollard

20 October 2008 14:21

Ranking: 1st

Year of release: 1964

The car: Aston Martin DB5 with the usual eyebrow-raising modifications from Q’s gadget division.

Why it’s special: What’s not to like about an Aston DB5 with gun barrels behind the indicators, a revolving number plate and a bulletproof rear window?

Best bit: Q introducing 007 to the various gadgets on the Aston with his summary gusto.
Q: ‘Now this one I’m particuarly keen about. You see the gearlever here? Now if you take the top off, you’ll find a little red button. Whatever you do, don’t touch it.’
Bond: ‘And why not?’
Q: ‘Because you’ll release this section of the roof, and engage and fire the passenger ejector seat.’
Bond: ‘Ejector seat? You’re joking!’
Q: ‘I never joke about my work, 007.’

Pub fact: The DB5 also appears in Thunderball, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale. But Ian Fleming actually had Bond in a DB MkIII in the novels.

Plot overview: Auric Goldfinger has a conniving plan (Operation Grand Slam) to radiate Fort Knox’s gold supplies, thus sending the value of his own gold reserves through the roof. Agent 007 - James Bond (Connery) is despatched to investigate and neutralize the situation, but it’s not going to be easy with hired muscle the likes of rotund oriental assassin Oddjob (Skata) and Pussy Galore (Blackman) in his way.

For: Close to automotive perfection; those gadgets

Against: A bit obvious

CAR verdict: The golden car on the silver screen

Cruz Pedregon wins Funny Car title; Krawiec tops in bikes

NHRA Auto Club of Southern California Finals
Auto Club Raceway, Pomona, Calif.

Funny Car: Cruz Pedregon won his second season championship, and first in 16 years, with a victory Sunday in the season-ending event. After Pedregon won his first-round meeting against Jerry Toliver, he secured the title when his two closest challengers lost in the first round. Season-long leader Tim Wilkerson fouled against John Force, and Robert Hight lost to Pedregon’s brother, Tony.
Pedregon then drove his Advance Auto Parts Toyota Solara to his third straight event victory to close out the six-race Countdown to 1, NHRA’s Playoffs. He beat Ron Capps in the final round for his 26th career win and second at his home track. “I’m stunned,” Pedregon said moments after his brother eliminated the last racer within reach. “It’s awesome Tony got that win right there because I’m standing here thinking of my dad (Frank) and that I hope he’s proud of his sons. I was 18 when he died and Tony was 16 and now we each have two world championships. We’ve come a long way for a couple of Hispanic kids from Chino.”

Pro Stock Motorcycle: Eddie Krawiec won his first POWERade Series crown, and did so without winning a race during the season. He joined Rob Bruins, the 1979 Top Fuel champ, as the only drivers in NHRA history to win a season title without earning an individual race victory. Krawiec entered the Countdown to 1 in seventh place and finished second in four of the six races in the championship playoffs, securing his first title and the fourth for his Harley-Davidson team and the seventh for Vance & Hines Racing. “Consistency pays off,” Krawiec said. “It shows you that you just need to go rounds at the end. We made the Countdown in seventh place and have been in four of the last five finals. I haven’t had a chance to get my first (event) Wally yet, but I’ve got a big gold Wally (for winning the championship). I do have a $75,000 check here though, so if someone wants to sell a Wally, I could buy one.” Chris Rivas continued his hot streak by winning his third race in a row, defeating newly crowned season champ Krawiec in the final round. Rivas, who moved to second in the final point standings with the win, powered his Buell to a performance of 6.929 at 191.95 to drive away from Krawiec’s Harley-Davidson, which trailed at 7.009 at 190.46.

Top Fuel: Larry Dixon raced to his second win of the season, holding off Rod Fuller in the final round. Dixon, who moved to second in the point standings with the victory, covered the distance in 3.833 seconds at 300.93 mph for his 43rd career victory and first at the finals. It was his fourth win at Pomona.

Pro Stock: Greg Anderson claimed his sixth Pro Stock victory of the season in a Pontiac GXP when Kurt Johnson fouled at the start in his Chevy Cobalt. It was Anderson’s 57th career victory, his fourth win at the finals and seventh win at the historic Pomona track.

News & Rants: Website Helps You Get Paid to Drive Your Car

My friend Laura was looking to earn a little extra cash and stumbled across iFreeAuto.com , an advertising service that will hook you up with advertisers (“partners”) who will pay you to drive around with their ads on your car. Bailout Watch 205: GM Blackmails Dealers

Detroit’s slow-mo meltdown has been rife with tipping points for years now. As bad decisions piled upon bad luck, we’ve seen the signs become increasingly ominous. The light at the end of the tunnel has become so faint now that each new misstep comes hard on the heels of the previous one, each taking on ever more existential significance. Perhaps though, we have reached a new low in the news coming out of GM today, as Automotive News [sub] reports that GM will delay incentive payments of $302.4m to its dealers for two weeks. If this decision was made based on GM’s liquidity crisis, it means that GM can’t come up with $300m until December 11: A stuffed stocking of not good. On the other hand, if it’s another twisted ploy to generate political support for a bailout, it’s some inspired stuff. Based on the letter (after the jump) sent by GM VP of Marketing Mark LaNeve, it’s looking like a little of both. After all, blackmail has always been a crime of desperation.

Daily Podcast: Jalopnik’s 10 Best Fall Weekend Trip Cars. Or Not.

Originally posted (without my snarky italicized comments) at Jalopnik.

10. Mazda MX-5 Retractable Hardtop
Starts off well. If you pack very light.

9. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Oh, this’ll be just great on the highway. I thought they said weekend trip, not off-roading camping expedition.

8. Maserati Gran Turismo S
Might as well add a Bentley while we’re at it.

7. Volkswagen Tiguan
Nope.

6. MINI Cooper Clubman
Do you have so much stuff it won’t fit in a Cooper with the rear seats folded?

5. Ford Ranger FX4
This is a joke, right?

4. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X
I’m sure my girlfriend would love a 5 hour drive with me keeping one of these on a rolling boil.

3. BMW X6
I’d rather not send the villagers running.

2. Subaru Outback Limited 2.5 XT
Makes the most sense out of any car on the list.

1. Porsche 911 Targa 4
Sure, and do me a favor, fill the trunk with diamonds.

The Berkowitz list (and they’re all under $50k): Subaru Outback 2.5 XT, Dodge Challenger SRT8, BMW 335i, Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, Mazda MX-5, Volkswagen Jetta TDI or 2.0T, Saab 9-3 Convertible, MINI Cooper S, and Suzuki SX4.

Michigan: Police Chiefs Admit Traffic Enforcement is for Revenue

Dwindling property tax revenue has forced local governments in Michigan to look to motorists to refill their municipal budgets, according to a Detroit News analysis. In 2002, the city of Detroit issued a total of 126,007 traffic tickets. Last year, that figure grew to 245,249– a 94 percent jump. The percentage increase was even greater in small towns like Plymouth, which saw the number of tickets skyrocket from 440 to 2,584 — up 487 percent — over the same period. “When I first started in this job thirty years ago, police work was never about revenue enhancement,” Utica Police Chief Michael Reaves told the DetN. “But if you’re a chief now, you have to look at whether your department produces revenues. That’s just the reality nowadays.” Utica issued 3540 tickets in 2003 and 5518 in 2007 — a 56 percent increase. A few communities like Pontiac saw ticket revenue decrease in proportion to the number of police laid off, but eighteen jurisdictions overall reported a ticketing increase of more than fifty percent. The National Motorists Association cited Detroit suburbs as home to the worst speed traps in the country.

Editorial: Bloom Off The Rose For Chinese Car Industry

Time for the United Auto Workers (UAW) to collect second-hand songbooks and ship ‘em over to their comrades– make that “union brothers” in China. Chinese taking our jobs? Wake up guys! Solidarity forever! The Chinese worker is taking it on the chin just like the working stiff in God’s Own Country. And let’s ignore the fact for a while that FICA, SECA, COBRA, and VEBA are not part of the Chinese language. PSA Peugeot Citroën, an affiliate of Dongfeng Motor in China, has “decided not to renew the contracts” (translation: has fired) 1000 workers on their Wuhan site, Gasgoo reports. Volkswagen, which depends on China for 15 percent of its worldwide auto sales, gave the Chinese equivalent of pink slips to 700 people at their Changchun factory. According to Chinese media reports, Ford, BMW, Chery, and untold more are busy. Busy thinning out their working masses, that is. Where did all the thousand flowers go?

Canadian Finance Min: “No bailout”

When the leaders of the G20 meet this weekend, they’ll look to Canada’s conservative but durable banking model as a template for the rest of the world. Since the Liberal reign of Paul Martin as Canada’s Finance Minister, Canada’s been the “Wealthy Barber” of the developed world, deploying bland but solid fiscal policy to great effect.
